Femininity in Denim

Everybody is born stylish. Then we start wanting to look like other people!

Where do you think femininity comes from?  Is it something you wear?  How you dress?  Your makeup?  Or just simply how you feel about yourself?

I have talked about femininity before and one of the key notes that I always come back to is that femininity is absolutely tied to how you feel about yourself  Femininity is in fact a feeling that is transferred from you to whoever you are around.  I know that no matter what it is that I am wearing if I feel amazingly confident and happy with myself that is what I project.  Now, if I am wearing something that makes me feel better about myself because I’ve looked in the mirror and really like what I see, then I am more likely to feel feminine or classy – and here’s the absolute best part, it is a strength and power if we learn how to harness it.

So, with that being said, is it possible to feel really feminine when you are dressed more casually say in jeans or something completely casual?  I say absolutely YES!  For me, when I find a fantastic pair of jeans that fits my curves, that are comfortable and also that look amazing, I am going add a fabulous top and make that whole outfit just rock! By adding a nice blouse like I am wearing in this post, it dresses up the jeans a little more, but still has a casual, fun vibe.

I am always open to trying new styles and stores, so when I was sent this pair of jeans from Dress Barn and they even offered to customize them for me, I jumped at the chance to give them a try.  Here is my honest feedback and review on what I liked about them…

  1. I have been loving the boot cut style (bringing it back again) because they are different from what a lot of other people are wearing.
  2. The denim fabric is really soft, stretchy and comfortable, which means that even if you’re not a fan of regular denim that can sometimes be harsh on the skin and not very flexible for sitting, you will love how these jeans feel.
  3. They are very affordable, which means that you don’t have to limit yourself to just one pair that you might have to if you were buying some of the more expensive designer jeans.
  4. They have a variety of different cuts and colors, so you can find exactly the style and color that works best for you – all with the same great fit that accentuates all your greatest features.
  5. Even though they are boot cut they are fitted, and they allow me to feel sexy, feminine and dress them up or down depending on what I am doing.  I recently wore them when I was traveling with a pair of mid heel booties, and they were perfect. Just the right amount of stretch and comfort for long periods of sitting.

No matter where you decide to get your jeans from, make sure that they are comfortable. There is nothing worse than a pair of jeans that makes you look great but you can hardly breathe and you couldn’t even entertain the idea of eating at all. For summer there are so many more jean & denim options, so have fun. Try some, wear them with a nice blouse, add some cool shoes, dress them up or down and see how you feel. When you exude femininity, which is ultimately where real femininity comes from, what you’re wearing will never take away from that. So I do believe that you can absolutely feel and look amazingly feminine when you are dressed casually and in jeans!

Have you ever had a day when you have woken up and you don’t feel great, for some reason you have a lack of energy, and you just don’t want to dress up at all.  I usually have about one day every other week where I experience a little demotivation around putting forth an effort on my appearance, or I just don’t care.   I have found that on those days, when I really push myself to make an effort, at some point during the day my mood starts to match my effort.  I have always felt like as Women we should use our outfits to express how we feel about ourselves, and sometimes to help us feel on the inside how we look on the outside.

Denim on Denim

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail!

I have to admit wearing denim on denim like I am in this post is not something I have done a lot of, but I wanted to experiment, so I wanted to share.

I always had some preconceived notions that it had to look a certain way, that only certain people could pull it off, and that it always had to be a contrasting denim…what I found is that I actually loved it and I will more than likely do a lot more of it!

As we all know there are so many rules when it comes to fashion (at least how fashion used to be), but I am here to remind you that those rules are really just GUIDELINES and you can adapt them to yourself.

Before I moved over to the U.S. from England I didn’t wear a lot of denim, I considered it a lot more casual than I liked so I shied away from it. Since I have been over here, I have found that I love it for all occasions. The best thing is that it can be dressed up or down and I can create any look I want. When I used to work in Corporate America there were rules for dress, and at one point we used to be “allowed” to wear jeans on Fridays until Casual Friday’s were taken away because they started to become a little too casual. I couldn’t understand it for a while because the jeans I was wearing actually cost more than a lot of my business clothes, and I always dressed them appropriately, but nevertheless it perpetuated that thought process in me that caused me to believe that jeans were TOO casual.

I honestly do believe that jeans or denim of any time can look just as professional, if not more when done correctly, than any business wear. It is also a fabric that is highly adaptable, versatile and fun…so experimenting is always fun! So, here are some quick and easy steps to styling your denim that will work for anyone:

  1. Add a statement piece – this is exactly what I did with my super funky jacket that my mum customized for me. The Black sleeves really break up the look and make it much more eye catching. Adding really cool accessories can work too.
  2. Steer clear of adding a denim handbag, scarf or shoes…it can be just a little too much for a denim on denim outfit.
  3. Make sure that the shade of denim you choose flatters your body type – the darker the denim the more flattering it is. If you are really craving a lighter shade, then make sure that the cut is only hitting you where you want it to.
  4. Adding a loose, flouncy denim like chambray is a great way to create a more feminine vibe.
  5. Try not to look too “matchy” – wearing the exact same shade on the top or bottom, with nothing to break it up, can just look like you’re trying to hard to get that perfect match.

January Bleakness

My dreams are my dress rehearsals for my future!

January in Utah is probably my least favorite month. I love the whole new beginning of it, but the bleakness of winter, the inversion that seems to be getting worse each year, the freezing temperatures, and the dirty snow…they all add up to make me just feel like taking a bath and getting into bed.

I have found that there are some things I can do to help me feel a little more “sunshine” in my day, because I’ll be honest, if there is no sunshine I have a hard time functioning effectively. Some of these tricks may work for you too…

  1. I always make sure I have some time planned in the winter months to go somewhere warm and sunny. With the inversion there are sometimes weeks when we don’t see the sunshine here, and that can make the coldness even more depressing. I’m so excited that this year Brandon is taking me to Costa Rica for my birthday in February – but anywhere warm would be amazing.
  2. I make sure that I still keep up on my self care – pedicures, spending time with girlfriends and such. It can become so easy to neglect yourself when all you want to do is hibernate, but that’s the time when it’s the most important.
  3. I make myself do some kind of winter activity that gets me outside. Of course I make sure that I am properly prepared with the right clothes, otherwise it wouldn’t be fun. When sledded at the cabin I didn’t spend hours outside, but the little time that I did made me appreciate the warm cabin, and most importantly it made me appreciate the beauty of winter a little bit more.
  4. Stay true to a workout routine. It’s so much easier to exercise when it’s warm outside, I definitely miss my mountain bike, but staying strong during winter will actually give you more energy and make you feel better. Whatever your workout regimen is, whatever you choose to do, find something that is reasonable and that you can stick to. It’s no good having the best intentions of an intense workout and then quitting after the first week.
  5. I work every day on finding something to appreciate about that day. I realized that I used to count down to warmer spring days, to my next vacation, to some upcoming date or event, and I realized that I was wishing my life away. Winter is here, may as well enjoy it and find something to appreciate in its bleakness and beauty.

There are so many things about winter that even I, an intense summer lover, can appreciate. I love to drive around and look at snow covered homes and yards, see the Christmas lights that tend to stay up throughout the month of January, and look for the biggest icicles possible. Finding something to appreciate about something that is not your favorite, that’s the key to finding a little more joy in your journey of life.

I have realized that each year we have 4 seasons and I am wishing away 1/4 of my life if I don’t find something good or something I can appreciate about winter.

Pursue your Dreams

“Dreams and goals are important in our lives – we should not give up on our dreams your dreams is not as important as what you become by achieving your dreams!”

 

When you were little and someone asked you who or what you wanted to be what did you tell them?  I had a dream to be a Doctor and more specifically an OB Gyn, which changed to an Optometrist when I realized I could only handle births that had happy endings.  I studied pre-med for my Associates Degree and then my Bachelors was in Physiology with Microbiology.  Sounds like I was on track, right?  Well, what I found out along the way was that I actually didn’t like to be tied down to something, have a rigid structure or simply that I really didn’t like to be told what to do.  As you can imagine, that would never be the case with anything in the medical field, so I decided to look into sales instead.

My dad had been a very successful salesman for all of my life, and I had realized that he had enormous amounts of flexibility, make amazing money and had lots and lots of vacation.  Obviously all three of those things were selling points for me, so that’s how I ended up where I am today.

I don’t feel like I gave up on any of my dreams, or at least I didn’t until a couple of years ago, and that is the time when I started working more with Brandon and started by blog.  I knew I wanted to give back, I knew I wanted to help people, and I knew I loved fashion.  For a long time I had no idea how those things could possibly tie together, but I am starting to figure that out now.

Dreams and goals are so important in our lives.  In order to achieve the big goals we have to be willing to set smaller ones and work towards achieving them.  At some point in our lives we have all achieved SOMETHING and the feeling that we get when we achieve something, well that’s what keeps us on track for bigger and better things.  It doesn’t mean that fear doesn’t creep in or that we sometimes have to change our direction or tactics, but what it does mean is that a dream or goal is just that – something that we get to turn into reality by constant effort, drive, determination and resilience.

Have you ever been told by someone that you wouldn’t be able to do something?  I know I have.  When I was in High School in England I had a teacher that didn’t like me and had no confidence in me.  In fact she actually told me that I should set my sights lower than being a Doctor.  I have to admit it was probably because I wasn’t the best student, but shhh! don’t tell my kids that.  Regardless, that kind of negativity is bound to have an impact on even the most confident person.  I am pretty tough, but I can tell you, for a while I actually started to believe that I wasn’t smart, that I wasn’t going to be able to do what I wanted to do and even worse, that I wasn’t good enough.  Not believing in yourself is probably one of the worst things you can do to yourself.  It is what depression is made of, it can create anxiety and even thoughts of suicide.

Having a dream is something that can create sunshine on even the darkest day, but only if you realize that in order to get what you’re dreaming of, you actually have to put in some effort.  I know there has been a lot of information out there about “manifesting” your dreams, and don’t get me wrong, we absolutely attract to ourselves the things we focus on, but it still requires work, dedication and commitment – and when you combine those things with focusing on the dream, that’s when it becomes more attainable.  I’m not saying that good things won’t ever happen to you without work, because I have had great things happen to me…but it is also not the norm.  I used to have a boss that always told me “the harder you work, the luckier you are” and I believe that 100% because that is what I saw in my business.

No matter what you believe, remember that having a dream and pursuing that dream is not something you should ever give up!

Don’t be afraid to Sparkle!

Even though next week is Halloween all the stores already have their Christmas stuff on display…

It makes me excited and sad at the same time.  Excited because I love the spirit of Christmas, I love how my kids get excited and I love to pick out personal, thoughtful gifts for all my friends and family.  Sad because it means the year is already over and we are already looking to the future (which can be a problem if you’re not enjoying the present – and I definitely have to focus so I don’t fall into that trap!)

Growing up we never had a live Christmas tree – they were a lot harder to get in England.  In fact, for many years of my youth we actually had a silver tinsel tree that was about 6′ tall…I wonder if that’s where my love to sparkle came from?  We would decorate the tree with all the brightest, boldest colors and even add some tinsel or garland in metallics as well.  I have seen trees like this since I have moved over here to the U.S. and I still love them – in fact at some point I would love to have one in my home (not sure if I can get Brandon to commit to that 😉 )

We see the most amazing window displays, lights, colors and garlands everywhere we go.  There is not a place where the holiday’s doesn’t seem to touch, and I love it!  The holidays are a fabulous time to add a little sparkle into your life.  Even if you are not the biggest fan, there are always ways to add just a little pop into an outfit by using something metallic or a little bling.

In today’s outfit the boots are definitely not subtle, but I absolutely love them (you might not, so then you should pick something that works for you).  The blouse has a more subtle gold thread running through it, but still sparkles.  When you add the coat (of contrasting sheepskin fabric) with the gold buttons, the patent leather satchel, the shiny pants, the gold booties and of course the metallic blouse, I think you will agree that there is no way I am not afraid to sparkle 😉

 

 

Whether you have a big personality, prefer to stay a little out of the limelight or you’re completely uncomfortable with ANYTHING that draws attention to you, there are ways to add a little sparkle.  In fact, here are some suggestions just in case you need a little inspiration:

  1. Use your jewelry to add the sparkle.  A pair of big gold hoops, a long statement necklace with jewels and bling, some stacked bracelets in contrasting metallics.  There’s no shame in not wanting to be bold and “out there”…but I don’t know what it is, adding a little sparkle just makes me feel better.
  2. Add a metallic scarf or an embellished scarf or beanie.  I have a beanie that has diamonte’s all over it and it is my absolute favorite beanie.  So even when I am feeling a little more dressed down or casual and I know it’s going to cold outside, I add that hat and suddenly not only do I not need to do my hair, but voila – sass!!
  3. Belts with a statement buckle or a metallic belt are a great way to make any outfit pop.  I have a silver belt that is mid width, and it’s perfect to pair with black jeans to make the outfit stand out a little.
  4. Wear a pair of shoes or boots that are not 100% metallic, but maybe have some studs or buttons on them that are metallic.  That way they stand out without being more in your face.  I have a few pairs of black shoes that have either silver or gold studs, some more edgy than others, but all of them add a little something extra to the outfit I am wearing.
  5. Wear a blouse similar to the one in my post that has a thread of metallic running through it.  It’s a great way to add a touch of sass without having to overcommit to the whole “sparkle” vibe!
  6. Sequins- pretty much anything with sequins is going to be the perfect amount of sparkle.  I have pants, a skirt but even a simple embellishment on a blouse is somewhere to start.
  7. Add a pop of metallic eyeshadow – a very subtle but fun way to start.  I even bought some last year that have glitter in them, perfect for a special occasion rather than every day wear.
  8. A purse or clutch in metallic or embellished is also a fun way to add a little pop to your outfit.

In stores for the holidays you will see red metallics, green, gold, silver, rose gold, and many more…so why not take this time of year (pretty much when everyone steps out of their comfort zone a little more) to try something that you might not normally try.  What’s the worst that can happen?  You’ll either love it or you won’t and either way, you’ve grown by being open to being different.

Growth only takes one step…the first step and you’re already on that road!

I’ve got that Luxurious Feeling

 

“If you’re always trying to be normal, you’ll never know how amazing you can be!”

 

Have you ever noticed that there are certain fabrics that make you feel that you are wearing luxury, emanating class and they just make you feel a little more confident.  It may sound weird but I have definitely noticed when I wear certain things I seem to walk with a little more pep in my step!

In today’s post I am wearing one of my favorite fall/winter cardigans with a fur overlay that can be removed.  It is one that I bought last year when I was back in England from French Connection, but don’t fear there are plenty of other fur options out there to buy (I’ve linked some of my top picks below).

I did a little research because I wanted to find out if I was overthinking this whole fabric thing, and here’s what I found:

Throughout history there have been certain fabrics that have long been worn by royalty and by only those with money.  Times have definitely changed now with the introduction of faux fur, silk being used not only by designers now, and wool which was traditionally a very expensive fabric is now mass produced so that it can be made available to everyone.

 

 

These luxurious fabrics were worn because it made the rich and royals feel confident, unique and very often superior.  Not that I think we should ever want to dress to be superior to another human being, I do think that anything that can give you a little confidence and feel unique is a good thing.

I absolutely love wearing faux fur because in all of it’s many forms, mainly because of the sass it can add to any outfit, but there are definitely other fabrics that can add that air of uniqueness to your wardrobe, such as:

Velvet – perfect to wear for fall and winter.  It works well by itself or with a contrasting fabric such as denim or leather.

Satin – definitely one of the more sexy types of fabrics.  Looking to add a little glamour to your look, satin is your friend.

Chiffon – a very delicate and feminine fabric.  It’s elegance can create the most amazing ballgowns that you will see on the red carpet.  If you’re looking to really pull no punches, this is a fabric you won’t want to overlook.

Tulle – who wouldn’t love to add a tutu to their wardrobe.  Seriously though, there are so many fun things you can create with tulle- I have a  long length skirt that is so fun and I wore for an award banquet.  It definitely stood out from the crowd (which is always what you want when you’re amongst hundreds of people 😉 )

Whatever your personal taste and personality don’t feel that because something is popular that you have to wear it.  If you don’t feel comfortable wearing something it really doesn’t matter whether that fabric is known to make you feel sassy, confident or luxurious – ultimately it’s all about how it makes YOU feel.

Make No Excuses – Just Goals

 

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment!”

 

Do you have goals?  Even if you think you don’t, I am sure there are some things that you want to achieve.  It could be as simple as decorating your home, raising your kids to be respectful, or even just about eating healthy.  What one thing do all these goals have in common?  They require WORK to get there!

Have you ever found yourself imaging your future, the home you’ll live in, the career you’ll have, standing at your kids’ weddings next to the bride or groom with pride all over your face?  To imagine is completely normal, but the only way you will actually get there is by doing at least some work.

In order to stand next to your kids on their wedding day requires you having a good relationship with them (WORK), to have the career you want (EFFORT), to move homes (WORK, TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT).  The thing that I have noticed in my 20 year career in sales is that unfortunately a lot of people want the reward without the effort.  The problem with that is that our imaginations can create AMAZING realities, but when we are in our actual reality it looks bleak in comparison.

It is only my second day in my new career, and I can tell you that it has its challenges, the grass is not always going to be greener, but the one thing that I have going for me is that no matter what I am not afraid to put in the effort.  Working hard is not the most important thing, working smart needs to be part of it as well.  I have found myself having to think a lot more about structuring my day to include tasks I want to accomplish, the things I need to do, along with things that I know will distract me if I don’t schedule time for them.

We have so many distractions in our life that if we don’t schedule time for those distractions we will become swept away, and when the option of doing a harder task versus something that is more fun, we will always welcome the fun one if we haven’t planned ahead.  For example, as I sit writing this blog I have probably had 20 emails, 3 texts, not to mention the phone call from one of my boys.  Obviously some distractions can’t be avoided (I try to never miss a call from my kids, even though most of the time it’s about drama or something I wish I didn’t have to deal with), but the big question is…do we welcome those distractions.  I will definitely admit that when I am doing mundane tasks I tend to become more easily distracted and tend to stay that way for longer.

So, now we know what we have to deal with on a daily basis..how do we  handle it effectively?  I have found that I allocate myself a certain amount of time on a task, and once that time is up I switch to another task.  If I haven’t completed the first task I can always go back to it.  This helps me with my focus,  my boredom and most importantly I allow myself a little break (even if it’s just a bathroom break) so I don’t become burned out!

 

 

I don’t always do work outdoors like I am in this post, but there are definitely times when a little fresh air can be exactly what the doctor ordered – maybe you can give it a try (although it’s been pretty cold here in Utah, so I won’t be able to do it soon!)

Feel Good in your own Skin

“The best gift you can ever give yourself is the permission to feel safe in your own skin.  To feel worthy, and like you are enough!”

Feeling good in your own skin is so much more than being confident in how you look…it is more about who you are as a person and how you feel about that person.

We all came into this world the same way, but our experiences and our relationships in our lives shape us into who we are today. Sometimes those experiences can  cause us to feel insecure, lacking in confidence, or even make us feel like we are not good enough.  It can be hard to move through things that trigger us, or make us feel like this, but there are definitely steps we can take to help soften us and allow us to feel more worthy, more comfortable in our own skin and ultimately more confident.

I have found that the more I give myself grace for not being perfect, and the more I don’t compare myself or what I do to others, the better I feel about myself.  I can tell you that this getting older thing is not for the faint of heart.  I didn’t realize how much it affected me until I saw some pictures of me when I was younger, and noticed that I have laughter lines, I have wrinkles I had chosen not to notice before and that perhaps my muscles aren’t as toned as they once were.

 

 

So, as we go through life, how do we feel good about ourselves even as these things happen?

Here are a few things that help me – maybe they’ll help you too:

  1. Take care of yourself – for me this can be as simple as taking a bath at night, reading a good book or just having a small amount of time to be left with my thoughts.  I like to be unpredictable, so for me going on a bike ride in a different direction, walking the dog a different route or even driving home a different way allow me to feel free and let the stresses of the day go a little.  We don’t all have the same things that relax us or make us feel good, so whatever it is for you, that’s what you need to do.  It seems like the world is advertising to us all the time about what we should do, eat, wear, and like…but ultimately whatever it is that makes YOU feel good, well that’s what you need to do!
  2. Focus on the good – it’s easy to be critical about your flaws or what is wrong with you…so what if every time you saw something that you didn’t like about you, in turn you found something to appreciate about that thing.  For example, I always had a really flat stomach and that’s not the case anymore…but here’s the best part – I have 4 boys that I am immensely grateful for,  and I wouldn’t trade a little bit of a stomach for any of those kids.  Another could be the wrinkles around my eyes – but I appreciate that I have had plenty to laugh about in this life.
  3. Embrace your Uniqueness – we are all created to be different,  so why would we want to change who we are in order to fit in?  I am very lucky that my parents always encouraged me to embrace my unique, quirky and feisty personality, because I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t.  Society teaches about fitting in all the time, and social media only accentuates that need…but what if we considered that the world just wouldn’t be as it should without US and what unique traits we have to offer.
  4. Don’t be afraid to be alone – before I met Brandon I was a single mom for about 5 years, and during that time I really wanted to meet someone to settle down.  What I realized is that I wasn’t ready to meet him until I was 100% OK with being alone.  I love the time I spend by myself, not that I don’t love the company of my family or my friends, but I also need that time to make me the best I can be for all of them.  Taking time to be alone to read, to contemplate, meditate, or exercise are great ways for us to enjoy alone time.
  5. Do things that make you happy – as you have probably noticed by now, one of my biggest loves is travel.  I love to travel with Brandon, with my kids, my friends and even alone.  The thrill of exploring new places, enjoying sunshine, waterfalls, the ocean, the forest, and many, many other things is really the reason I work.  Even going out of town for business is a huge thrill for me because I usually get at least a little time to relax.  I love to shop (I know, shocker), I love to go to movies and dinner with my family, I love river rafting, hiking, biking and sunbathing.  By doing any of these things we are able to fill our cups to make us better for ourself and those around us.

Confidently be YOU

“When you step out of your comfort zone, you are stepping into your greatness!”

Even though I have always thought of myself as a confident person, there are definitely some things that still make me uncomfortable.  For example. when I first started this blog I was extremely uncomfortable about taking pictures in front of people, I felt self-conscious and I even thought I was being a conceited posting as many pictures of myself as I did.

What I found it that the more I take my pictures, the more open I am to just putting myself out there the easier it becomes.  There are still times when I have thoughts of self-doubt, and wonder if I am completely wasting my time writing this blog, but I realize that the whole point of my starting writing was so that I could let others know that stepping outside of a comfort zone is the only way to grow – and if we are not growing then we’re not living!

I trust myself to do things that are hard, and learn from my mistakes, and here’s the most important part – I am learning a huge lesson in grace.  I am learning that I need to cut myself some slack and not expect to get everything right the first time or to do it perfectly.  I know there are some of you out there that struggle with perfection issues, and wanting to do everything perfectly or not at all…so here’s to you, here’s to learning to do it at 70% and actually trying rather than not trying because you know you won’t be able to do it perfectly.

I made a promise to myself that I would do hard things to make myself better & to stretch myself, so that when I look back at this life, I could say that I didn’t waste any of it.  That I made mistakes, fell down and got up again, tried new things, taught others by example, and most importantly that I didn’t regret anything.

 

 

I still feel uncomfortable posting videos of myself, I don’t really like to see myself talking and I don’t really like the sound of my own voice.  As I write these words I realize how ridiculous they sound, so that’s why I am stepping even further out of my comfort zone with a project that I will be able to tell you about really soon!

What does it mean to be confidently YOU?  What makes you feel uncomfortable or stretches your confidence a little?  I can promise if you are willing to do one thing each week that makes you feel a little uncomfortable your confidence will grow enormously and before you know it, you’ll be doing things you didn’t even think you were capable of.  Whenever I am afraid of doing something I think about my kids and what message I am sending them by not doing something.  I know that as parents we expect our kids to do what we say, but I can tell you 100% that as I look back to when my kids were little, they were so much more likely to do what I DID rather than what I SAID.

Setting an example is the best way to pay it forward to your kids, your friends, your family and pretty much anyone that you come into contact with.  It definitely wouldn’t look too good for me to be talking about how important confidence and belief in yourself is if I didn’t practice what I preached!

Expand your Style Comfort Zone

“A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there!”

Have you ever heard that your confidence grows in direct proportion to how much change or discomfort you are willing to face.

This is true of everything in life…for example.  When Brandon bought my mountain bike for me (it’s an electric bike that when you pedal has a little or a big kick of power depending on what you turn it to), I had NEVER mountain biked before.  I had always wanted to try it but was too scared to do it, so the first day I rode myself to the foothills of the mountains near my house where I knew there were some good, wide trails.  I rode up the hills great but became very nervous going downhill with the fear that I would fall over the handlebars, the rocks would make me fall off, and oh there was that one time where there was a snake across the trail!  He bought me the bike back in May for Mother’s Day and ever since then there has not been a week where I haven’t gone on at least 4 or 5 eight mile rides since then.

I am by no means a pro, but I am going faster and doing things that scared me to death now!  At the very least, I am confident enough in my ability to control the bike, to know what I can and can’t do, and most importantly, I am eager to try new trails and go new places.

You may be asking what this has to do with anything…well, here’s what I think.  Because this concept works with everything, it also translates to fashion and style.   Expanding your style repertoire can take baby steps, or a bold leap, depending on the level of change you are willing to face at any one time.

There are some styles that I would never wear…mainly because just because something comes in my size doesn’t mean it is appropriate OR cute for me to wear.  I do however, love to incorporate new things into my style, and when I do I have found that I have loved most of them.  Expanding your style comfort zone is something we can all do, but in our own way…so what is your way?

Each season there are new colors, new styles, patterns and fabrics – expanding your style could be simply just wearing a new color or fabric.  In today’s post the suit I am wearing is from a shopping trip to L.A., and the blouse is Zara.  I loved the luxurious color of the blouse along with the tweed of the suit because you are going to see a lot of tweed this fall and it is always a classic look.  If you were into the Gingham trend that has been around, tweed is a great alternative to switch things up.

The reason it is called a comfort zone is because it’s comfortable – which means it is easier NOT to change what you’re doing, but it is always not as fulfilling.  I have found that it is always a challenge to me to come up with new looks, new styles that work just for me, and put my own stamp onto styles of the season.

Here are some easy ways to expand your style comfort zone for the upcoming season:

  1. Add a scarf of a different color or fabric to mix things up
  2. Find your “go to” style and find it in velvet, satin or even leather
  3. Find a pair of funky, statement shoes or boots to make any outfit pop
  4. Wear a pair of funky, patterned or colored tights
  5. Wear a bold, bright pair of earrings (perhaps one with tassels) in a contrasting color
  6. Add glitter or sequins – they’ll definitely get you noticed
  7. Metallics are a great way to add spice, you can wear either shoes, scarf, bag, top or if you’re really bold, a pair of pants or a skirt
  8. Wear a color that is bright, bold and really noticeable
  9. Wear a pop of red or pink on your lips
  10. Fur – there’s never a bad time to add some fur
