Sweater Weather

“Don’t miss out on something that could be great just because it could also be difficult!”

Wherever you live, there is probably going to be more of a chance to wear sweaters or layers in the Fall, so how do you find the ones that are the most flattering and fun for you to wear?  Since in Utah we haven’t had the time to really get into this trend yet (it’s definitely coming just not here yet), so here are some throwbacks to some of my favorites…

I have always loved Fall more than Winter, mainly because Winter is just a little too cold for me, and in Fall I get the chance to layer and get really creative with my outfits while at the same time not freezing to death 😉

I am a very visual person, so colors and patterns really appeal to me, but I am also tactile, which means that I really care about how something feels.  There’s nothing worse than finding a cool sweater and it itching you all day because it’s not soft.  My youngest is definitely like this – we have bought him clothes over the years and if he doesn’t like how it feels, he will NEVER wear it, and I don’t blame him.  Honestly the only time I ever sacrifice comfort for style is with my shoes – LOL!

So, to answer my first question, here are some great ideas for wearing layers and sweaters for the Fall and Winter months:

Wear a large oversized sweater with some skinny pants.  Wearing oversized pieces means they can tend to make you look larger than you are, but when you wear slimming or skinny pants or a skirt you can offset that appearance.

Wear a fitted turtle neck with a cute casual skirt and pumps or boots.  As the weather gets colder adding a pair of funky tights is a great way to add that extra pop to the outfit as well.

Wear a fitted sweater with an accent belt, and then add another layer of a long cardigan for a unique take on sweater weather attire.  The ruffle skirt and boots are the perfect compliment too!

Wear a chunky cardigan with some booties.  Because I paired this cardigan with the fitted skirt, just like the oversized sweater, it prevents the perception of being larger than you are!~

Embracing each season can be as easy as finding a style that makes you feel at home in that season.  The key is not to let the weather (the thing you can’t control) decide how you feel about what you wear and how you feel.  It can be all too tempting to wear comfy, warm, cozy things in the Fall and Winter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look amazing.  Sweats can be cute – especially the leopard print or camo ones I have seen recently.  Enjoy experimenting with styles that could work for you, and don’t be afraid to try something a little funkier than usual.  Add a scarf here or there, wear a hat, layer like crazy and have fun!

Have a great day 🙂

Layering in Style

“A Real Woman smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection!”

A topic that is very appropriate for Fall and Winter is how to layer in style….

What I mean by layering in style is finding jackets, sweaters, cardigans and coats that become a continuation of your outfit.  I have always found it just as important to wear the right jacket as it is to wear the right clothes underneath.  In Utah we have quite a lot of snow in the winter, so obviously it can become very cold.  Utah is also known for many amazing ski resorts, which require the best (usually expensive) ski attire and equipment.  I see a lot of people wearing a ski jacket with a business outfit and I think that is something that could definitely be improved upon.  While I love ski jackets or down jackets and such, I feel like there is a more appropriate way to wear them – and that is when you are going for a more casual look and not trying to convey professionalism or femininity.

I definitely own some of these jackets and coats and I do pull them out for the right occasion, but I definitely own many other jackets and coats that can work better when I am going to work, a function, church or trying to look classy.

Here are some examples of ways to wear jackets or coats, which obviously don’t exclude wearing down or ski jackets:

A long, fluffy cardigan is perfect for enjoying days that are not too cold…it can work over a business outfit (like this one) or a more casual outfit.  I love cardigans, they are not too heavy and add that extra insurance layer “just in case”!

Mixing textures when you’re wearing a shorter jacket is something that can be really fun to do.  I paired this cute little velvet jacket with some faux Leather capri’s for a cooler day or evening (when it’s still important enough to want to look a little funky or edgy!)

The trusted down jacket – adding an accent scarf, and wearing it on a more casual day – this is the perfect jacket.  If you are a ski jacket or down jacket person no matter what, wearing a scarf, finding a jacket with some fur accents, or even just a contrasting shiny and matte look (like the one I have) is a great way to keep it unique and yet still look stylish.

Finally – a Leather jacket can work for just about any outfit.  It can add a little sass to your business attire, it can add some class to a pair of jeans and sweater, and it can even dress down a ball gown…
Leather has and will always be my “go to”, so I believe that every girl should own at least one Leather jacket…especially since you can even pick up some faux Leather now that you can’t even tell is not the real deal…

As you head into this fall and winter, firstly make sure you are going to be warm enough and secondly make sure you are doing it in style!!

Is Your Wardrobe Ready for Fall and Winter?

“Don’t change to fit the fashion, change the fashion to fit YOU!”

If you live in the northern hemisphere, then brace yourself, because chilly temperatures are on their way. Rather than lament the passing of those summer days, you should see this as an opportunity to revamp your wardrobe so that it’s more appropriate for the cooler period of the year. And good news: this can be a seriously fun exercise, one where you can rid yourself of those old and tatty pieces, get creative with your outfits, and all-around make sure you’re ready whatever the weather. Below, you can read my top ten ways you can transform your wardrobe for good; or at least, until spring returns.

Clearing Away The Leaves

The leaves will be falling outside, and you’ll be clearing them away, so why not also go through your wardrobe and have a clean up of any debris that’s taking up valuable hanger space? If you’ve not had a clear out in a while, you might find pieces that range from ‘wow, I would never wear that again’ to ‘this would be a fantastic piece…if it were 2014’. Once you’ve collected all the items you’re no longer so certain about, move onto the next step….

Discard, Swap, Amend

And now, what exactly do you do with these pieces that you’ll no longer be wearing? You have three options. You can discard them, which should mean giving them away to a charity shop (unless they’re damaged beyond hope, that is). You can also see if you have any friends that might have items you could swap your old clothes for; remember, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure! Finally, you could always get out the old sewing and crafts kit and see if you can amend the item so that it looks like new. It’s surprisingly easy to breathe new life into old clothes!

Plan Your Style

Now that you’ve got some space in the old closet let’s have a think about which look you want to don during the upcoming months. Remember, there is no such thing as fashion rules, so take a look at the styles that are catching your eye and try to work them into your wardrobe. A new style can be achieved can adding a few essential pieces, such as boots, or a stylish overcoat. These are the things that you’ll be wearing most, so give them the most attention.

What’s Missing?

But let’s not get too carried away with finding new styles; there is, after all, some cold weather to navigate, and as such you’ll want to do a headcount to make sure that all the essential items are present. If in doubt, load up on thick sweaters: there’ll always be space to put on a thick top and head out into the brisk air. In the absence of anything more glamorous to wear, they’ll be your go-to during the upcoming seasons.

Physically Ready

And should things get a little bit chillier than expected, remember that it’s always handy to have some extra cold gear in the locker just in case you have to brave some seriously cool temperatures. Layers will see off the worst of the cold, but it’ll be your warm winter jacket that really saves your bacon should you need to go outside when you’d much rather be curled up in bed!

Planning for Exercise

Just because we don’t have to be ready for the beach doesn’t mean we should be excused from exercising! Even though it won’t be at the top of your priorities, it’s important that you have some cool weather workout clothes so that you can head outdoors to get fit and healthy even if the temperatures aren’t playing ball. The good news is that you don’t just to have to buy things that are only functional. If you buy high-quality leggings, you’ll also be able to wear them with long sweaters and boots to create a cute fall day outfit. So even if you don’t quite make it to the gym, you’ll still be getting some stylish wear out of your new purchase.

What are the Fashions?

We’re all for celebrating individual style, but we’re also for celebrating collective style – that is, fashion – too. Why not take a look at some of this year’s fall fashions, and add something eye-catching to your wardrobe for when you want to make a splash at the classy events you’ll be making an appearance at in the coming months?

Replace the Essentials

It’s all good and well topping up your fashion items, but what about the nuts and bolts of your wardrobe? And more specifically, the things that never – unless something goes wrong – see the light of day? An incoming chill is a perfect time to get rid of your old pajamas and replace them with some cozy new ones, because your body will always thank you if you take the time to invest in new socks and underwear. While these are enjoyable at any time, you’ll be extra thankful for your decision to buy thick socks when it’s cold outside!

Hitting the Stores

Now that you’ve got a game plan in place, it’s time to do some shopping. But hold right there, because first you’ll need to figure out a budget for your shopping spree, and then make sure that you stick to it. It’s all too easy to go all shopaholic when you hit the stores, especially after you’ve convinced yourself that you need to replace your entire wardrobe, but trust us: you’ll be thanking us for slowing you down once your credit card bill comes in. Once you’ve made a list of all the items that you need to buy, stick with that!

Have Fun

Transitioning between seasons isn’t meant to be stressful; it’s supposed to be fun! Don’t let your big switch out cause you any unnecessary headaches. Make a day of it, and get your friends involved if they’re fashion friendly. So long as you stick to a budget, you’ll come away with a new wardrobe that is practical, stylish, ready for the chilly months, and oh so you. Enjoy!

Layering in Style

“I am slowly peeling off the many layers of me to find myself!”

It’s been really hot in Utah over the past few weeks, so it may not feel like it now, but at some point you are going to need some stylish layering options…

I am highlighting a couple that I used in recent shoots…these are some of my favorites, with the Leather jacket always taking the prize 🙂

What is your “go to” layering piece for cooler evenings, or as you start planning for colder days.  I always have to carry something with me when I fly as well, because for some reason I always manage to sit next to someone that wants the air at 50 degrees as I am sitting there shivering!

I posted a couple of great items that are part of the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, and it included a couple of jackets, but I went in and found a few more that you can check out…shop the links below!

Happy Anniversary Sale Shopping and remember, if you’re not sure that you need it, go shopping and I guarantee you’ll find something  you really do NEED!;)

Feels like Winter Again…

“You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one!”

The past few weeks in Utah have been pretty mild weather, but then last night the winds came in and suddenly we are back down to 30 degrees and definitely feeling the cold.

I am so ready for spring and for the warm weather to come and finally stay, but I guess since I have no control over the weather, and regardless of what I want to have happen with weather, it’s going to be whatever it is! So, with that being said, today I made the most of the weather and took the opportunity to wear a warm coat with an amazing accent scarf. Yes, the coat is simple, but with the addition of the Red and Black scarf it suddenly makes a statement and makes everything seem a little less cold!

Sometimes a warm, down jacket like this one is the only thing that really keeps out the cold, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look stylish. Adding fun accents like scarves, gloves and hats is a great way to dress up something that is simple.

This scarf was a Christmas gift from a friend, and I do believe you can never have too many scarves, and actually one of the best times to buy things like this is at the end of the season – so check out some similar picks below and you can have your own (that way you’re ready when the next unexpected snow storm hits, or when the weather suddenly changes, as we all know can happen at any time!)

From Scarves to Shawls

“Let’s do what we love, and do a lot of it!”

Looking for a different way of layering, a shawl is a great addition to your wardrobe.  They work with so many different outfits, and are perfect for throwing over something simple to spice it up.

Take today’s outfit for instance…all I am wearing are Black satin pants, a Green top with ruffles, some Black and Green Lace-up shoes – to which I added the Shawl that is Green, Blue and White.  While the outfit underneath is elegant, the shawl adds another dimension.

As I have talked about before, layering in the colder seasons is one of the most important considerations when choosing any outfit.  While it is important, it is also something that can be really fun and can truly express who you are!

I love reinventing myself every time I wear an outfit – I try not to wear the same thing the same way every time.  For example, I have worn this top before but last time it was with a Winter White skirt.  I like trying different combinations, because even though you are not creating entirely different outfits, it can definitely appear that way.  Have fun experimenting with your outfits and mix and match to make completely different looks.  Try wearing a Metallic or sequined top that is really fancy with some simple jeans – it is going to class up the jeans while still maintaining a great casual feel.

Hopefully you will have some time over the Holiday for you to experiment – although a word of advice:  don’t try on clothes after you have eaten your Thanksgiving meal – that will be enough to depress anyone!

“Talking about our problems is our addiction.  Break the habit.  Talk about your joys!”

If you are not already signed up for the exclusive Newsletter you really need to do that…some of the jackets shown above were sent out earlier this week, along with some others that are exclusive to this post.

I have a lot of friends that don’t like to shop, so if you fall into that category, this should be something that is a no brainer for you.  I will pick certain categories, trends and styles and post links for where you can shop for yourself.  It is a great way to get recommendations, ideas and for you to explore some of my favorite shopping sites.  Stay tuned because there will be much more to come!

This week for me has started off really well, I have felt positive and confident, which I know has affected the outcome of a lot of business that I have done already this week.  I am a firm believer in that whatever we focus on, that is what we get.  That can be a positive outcome or sometimes, if we are focused on things we don’t want – those things can truly come to fruition.  Here’s a challenge for you (who couldn’t use some better results in their life?)  As you find yourself thinking that something is too hard, you don’t have the energy or you are afraid of something happening so you focus on thinking about it, get up, put on your favorite music, dance for about 10 minutes and then see if you still feel the same way!  My guess, and I am not just saying this because I have actually done it, you will either have forgotten your negative thoughts, feel a new found focus or will somehow manage to problem solve the “big” challenge you had.

You may or may not believe in things like this – but let me ask you this “what do you have to lose?”  – are you already so successful, happy and confident that it isn’t worth even trying?

I don’t know about you but I am going to sing and dance my butt off because it’s much better than failing or quitting.

Have a great rest of your week…

More on Layering…

“To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong.”

Layering can be something that not everyone considers, but it is very important to do it right when you are putting together any outfit. As you can see from today’s pictures, the jacket more than compliments the outfit I chose, in fact, it actually adds to it!

Choosing the right jacket is just as important as choosing the clothes you wear underneath. I chose this jacket because not only the colors were a compliment to my outfit, but also because the double breasted style of jacket is something that is unique and noticeable. The Black with White trim and buttons make the jacket very attractive and professional.

When you are looking to buy coats or jacket, especially ones that you will use for business, you want to find those that are versatile so you don’t have to buy a different coat or jacket for every outfit. You can also add to your wardrobe by finding one or two statement jackets that will really stand out when you wear them (kind of like the one in this post). Wearing a statement jacket can have its benefits and downfalls – one benefit is that you will most definitely be noticed and remembered, a downfall is that people will remember the jacket and if you are looking to be different, you don’t want to wear the same thing over and over (especially when it is really noticeable).

The skirt in this post, while the length is mid-calf, with the cut out shapes around the bottom, it makes it a little different and again noticeable. I paired it with this great white blouse (one of my favorites because of how it flows and how feminine it is)…the shoes are again noticeable, classy and sophisticated – and they tie the whole outfit together.

The key to a classy outfit is finding pieces that by themselves are sophisticated, but most importantly when you put them together, that none of them take away anything from the other. As you can see, this outfit as a whole is great, but if you were to take any piece it would still be noticeable and remembered.

A Raincoat

“Every day may not been good, but there’s good in every day.”

Growing up in England we always had to be prepared by wearing a coat or jacket that was rainproof. I have always loved the look of traditional raincoats (or macs as we call them in England)…especially Burberry because I think they look so classy.

A jacket or a coat is a continuation of your outfit, so when you are wearing a business outfit, or just something classy, you want to make sure that your jacket follows the same vein. I have a large collection of coats and jackets because I really do like to incorporate them into my outfit and make sure that whatever I am wearing underneath matches my coat or jacket. I very rarely just throw something on because it’s cold – I usually have a master outfit plan!

The raincoat I am sharing in this post is one that my oldest son bought me for Christmas a few years ago, and I absolutely love it. I break it out on rainy days here in Utah and love how it makes me feel – even on a grey day!

My boys really do know me, and they always manage to find me things that I will love. It is great when you find out that your kids actually pay attention and care enough to notice things that you like. It kind of makes the whole mum thing really worthwhile! I break it out on rainy days here in Utah and love how it makes me feel – even on a grey day!

The weather in the Fall is very unpredictable, so planning ahead what you are going to wear requires a little more work. I always check the weather app on my phone so I know if I want wear pants, or if it’s time to break out the tights (I am definitely holding off on this one as long as possible!)

The pinstripe skirt and sweater combination is a great classy look for business, and because the sweater is longer I added a belt to accentuate the waist. When you are wearing a pencil skirt like this one, you definitely want to wear a slightly higher heel and pointed toes look the best.
