Walk in Style

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail!”

I realize that not everyone loves shoes as much as I do, but one thing I can tell you is that if you don’t pay attention to the shoes you are wearing, it can mean the difference between making a good first impression and not!

Shoes are the icing on the cake, the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle that is your outfit, and if you wear a pair that doesn’t match, is scuffed or scruffy, isn’t the right style for the outfit you are wearing, what it does is draw attention from the best parts of you to something that is wrong.  It may seem shallow, but here’s the fact…people notice the shoes you are wearing and they will make assumptions about you (whether they are correct or not, and whether they should be doing it or not doesn’t matter).  You have the control to make sure that their assumptions of your are the ones that YOU want them to make.

Strange to think that something as small as a pair of shoes could control someone’s opinion of you or have them form a great first impression.  I have talked before that quite often I will pick out the shoes before anything else, but that isn’t always the case, and I realize that is not something that everyone may feel comfortable with, so…here are some simple rules of thumb when picking out your shoes/boots for an outfit:

  1. Only wear a pair of shoes or boots that you are comfortable wearing – no matter how cute a pair of shoes is, if it’s too high, too pointy or just plain uncomfortable it’s going to have the opposite effect than you were going for.  You will have a harder time walking and draw attention to that rather than the shoes.
  2. Wear shoes that won’t get lost in the outfit – for example if you are wearing a wide pair of pants, your shoes are pretty much going to be hidden, so the need to wear something really fancy isn’t there.  What you won’t want to do is have the pants trailing on the ground, so wear shoes that will show as you walk and prevent the pants from dragging.
  3. In business, I have always preferred wearing at least a small or kitten heel.  It doesn’t mean that you can’t wear flats, but take care when you do to wear a pair that is a little more structured rather than so soft that your foot looks like it’s falling out the sides.  The key here is to look more polished, because believe me, people WILL notice!
  4. When wearing jeans, skinny jeans work with so many different styles giving you so many more options.  I like to mix things up depending on the season or the occasion, and when I am going somewhere special I sometimes add a little sass.
  5. Bold patterns, fabrics and colors are a great way add a little spice to a normally bland or conservative outfit.  For example, these booties in this post with the skinny jeans add an extra little pop to a pair of black skinny jeans.

Shoes should definitely not be the last consideration when choosing your outfit, in fact, when you take a little care when choosing your shoes I know first hand that you will reap the rewards.  Who doesn’t love a compliment or a little attention that wearing an awesome pair of shoes can bring.  After all, the right pair of shoes can speak louder than words!

I don’t know about you but I am walking into this Monday in a sassy pair of shoes 🙂

Don’t be Afraid to Sparkle

“You mustn’t be afraid to sparkle a little brighter darling!”

Ever since I could remember I have always loved standing out from the crowd and not blending in.  To me it has always been important to not be wearing the same thing as other people, or at the very least, not wearing it in the same way!

When I find something that really catches my eye, just like this Silver dress with the knee high Navy satin boots, I knew it was going to be a “shoot worthy” outfit.

Standing out isn’t going to mean the same thing to all of us…but if you are wondering, here are the Top 5 things I consider when looking for a really eye catching outfit:

  1. Color – this is probably the most important thing to me.  I like bold, bright, shiny – in fact, the more different or funky the better.
  2. Shoes – it always comes down to the shoes.  When I saw these Navy satin boots, I loved them because of the color but also because you don’t very often see satin boots like this – at least no knee high ones.
  3. Fabric – you can stand out even if you are wearing a T shirt if it is made from something bold or bright.  For example, a Red satin or velvet T shirt is definitely going to get you noticed.
  4. Accessories – sometimes just adding a statement necklace or scarf is enough to transform your look from ordinary to extraordinary in a heartbeat!
  5. Style – some styles look a little more of a statement.  I think that some of the most modest styles can make a statement.  For example – wearing a full length or maxi skirt that is full or one that has unusual features is going to be more funky than just choosing a knee high skirt that you normally stick to.  As you pick the style, make sure you consider your height and body shape – long skirts don’t work as well if you are really short or have a thicker waist.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should be walking around every day wearing a Silver dress and knee high boots, but there are definitely going to be some times that you are going to want to make a splash – and now you have a formula (if you choose to follow mine) or you can create your own based on your own unique style preferences!

A Few of my Favorite Things…

“What you tell yourself every day will either lift you up or tear you down!”

Ok so this may be a little Sound of Music-esque, but nevertheless, I have some things in my closet that when I wear them I just feel amazing.  It has nothing to do with what anyone else things, they truly are a few of my favorite things…

So let’s start here – this dress, the color, the cut, the length, and fabric, in fact to save even more time, I could say EVERYTHING about this dress just makes me feel amazing.  Now the dress alone could be enough for me to walk into any room with my head held high knowing I look good and just have that air of confidence, but I decided to take it up a notch and add a Leopard coat (if you don’t own one or haven’t thought about buying an animal print coat, you should really reconsider now), and some amazingly funky tights and boots.  Yes, this outfit is very bold, yes it is going to get you noticed, and yes, if you dare to wear it and trust that you can rock it, you WILL feel good about yourself.  (feel like you want to shop my outfit, check out the links below – the best news, the dress is almost FREE 🙂 )

If you have read any of my previous posts you know I am not one to condone copying someone else’s style in its entirety, however, if you see someone wearing something and it evokes some kind of feeling inside you making you want to just rush out and buy it, there’s something to be said for trusting your gut.  Not that we get it right all the time, but a lot of the time those feelings come from us already knowing what we like and what we think we can get away with (when I say get away with, I really mean more on the side of styles or cuts than colors or patterns).

Being bold is not for the faint of heart, you absolutely have to be prepared to cause people to stare, people to comment (not all of which are nice things because there are people out there that are just bitchy and like to say mean things), and most definitely you are going cause people to really notice you.  I don’t just mean by looking at you, but it’s kind of weird, I have noticed when I am wearing something really sassy and noticeable, people actually tend to listen more to what I am saying.  It’s almost as if they think that suddenly I have more knowledge or understanding of a subject.  Of course, logic tells you that this is not true, but you know as well as I do that there are “power” outfits, and those outfits absolutely without a doubt make people pay attention and take you more seriously.

I could get into bold doesn’t have to mean trashy, but I think we’ll save that for another day.  To me, bold means confident, absolutely OK with being yourself and not afraid to show others that you feel good about yourself.  It doesn’t mean you need to have people looking at you for you to feel good about yourself, but it does mean if they do, you’re fine with it.  I am drawing that line in the sand – don’t get mixed up by needing attention versus just getting it.

Confidence isn’t something that everyone just inherently has, but rather something that needs to be nurtured and grown.  So why not start 2018 by taking steps to grow your confidence – because if you do, that confidence will help you in all areas of your life.

Be bold – be brave – be you!

Time to Pull out the Fur…

“Wear your confidence like a badge of honor”

Thanksgiving is officially over, and as the end of the year draws closer, we know that colder weather is sure to follow.  One of the things I love so much about Utah is how amazing the valley and mountains look in the winter, it really is a winter wonderland (or at least I love it when I’m looking outside from a warm, cozy, fire-filled room).  Knowing that I don’t love to be cold, I have resigned myself to the fact that I’m going to face it no matter what, and I have bought myself some amazing coats that keep me cozy and look great!

The jacket I’m wearing in this post is one that I actually bought in August and have had it sitting, waiting to wear since then.  I have a few fur type coats and jackets but none are as unique as this one with the bead details.  You may or may not have figured this out about me by now that I love to wear at least one statement piece for each outfit, so wearing this, nothing else is really needed to make the outfit pop!  I love to find unique things and the reason I love them is because they make me stand out.  I have never been one to be OK to be part of the crowd, I have never been a shrinking violet, I kind of love the attention that wearing something bold and unique gets me!  (I’m not too proud to admit it 🙂 )

We all have ways that we like to dress, even if you feel like you don’t dress well, you have certain things that you buy, you very often put them together the same way, and what you wear will say a lot about what you think about yourself.  I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with that, but you should always ask yourself before you dress “what do I want people to see when they look at me”?  Of course, once people know you they are going to decide what they do and don’t like about you based on your behavior and personality and not just how you look.  The question is, are you going to get that far before someone decides?

If you are looking for ways to show people your personality without having to speak, what you wear will absolutely do that.  If you are someone that likes to blend in and not be noticed, people are going to know that just as they are going to know if you are cocky or arrogant.  While I do like to stand out and be noticed, I have to be careful that I don’t overwhelm people by being too bold (at least not all the time, and certainly not for important occasions such as business appointments, interviews, church, etc).

Whoever you are, someone is going to want to know you, so even if you don’t want to be too bold, do you want to hideaway.  I have seen people that are truly beautiful both on the inside and outside, but they are too afraid to show people how amazing they really are, and I think that is such a waste.  Obviously, how you express your style is your choice, but before you make that decision, why not consider this…those people you meet are missing out by not knowing or SEEING the real you!  Something to think about!

5 Reasons You Should Wear Colors that Make you Feel Good

“She loved life and it loved her right back!”

We all have certain colors that we are more drawn to than others, so what do we do when we see new styles or trends that tell us to wear something that is not exactly in tune with what we like?  It seems like everyone is telling what we should and shouldn’t like…so how do we decide what is best for US?  Do we just wear what the fashion magazines and stores tell us?

I don’t think anyone should do something that is something that doesn’t make them feel the best possible way about themselves…so here are my top 5 reasons you should wear colors that make you feel good:

  1. We may not realize, but our energy (both positive and negative) can be directly correlated to what colors we like.  If our favorite color is Red for example, then we are going to feel great when we are wearing Red!   So it stands to reason that if you want to feel positive about life, yourself, and what is happening around you, then you should wear the colors that evoke a positive response within you!
  2. It is also true that while colors can cause certain feelings and experiences within you, they can also do the same in others.  Red is a very strong, confident color…but it can also be intimidating to others.  So while it is important to wear those colors you are in tune with, you also need to consider different shades within your favorite colors, so as not to cause adverse reactions in others.  Essentially, know your audience – and if you are dealing with someone that is not going to like you to be too bold or overbearing, then you shouldn’t wear a color similar to the Red dress in this post (darker or more muted Red tones are more appropriate in this case).
  3. It is important to get feedback from others when you try new styles or colors, but bear in mind their opinions may be more in tune with what they like than what is going to make you feel good.  You may have one friend that loves Green so when you try something Green she is going to think it’s amazing, but it may not feel the same way to you.
  4. For each season you are going to see different shades of colors, so if you want to feel like you are still “in style” for the current season, you can try different shades of your favorite colors.  Yellow is a great example, for summer and spring it is bright and bold but for fall and winter, you will see more mustard colors…they are still Yellow but they work differently at different times of the year.
  5. Finally, fall in love with your favorite colors.  Red is absolutely my favorite color, and whenever I am shopping I am innately drawn to that color.  After wearing it, I recognize that it is my power color and I pull it out when I need to feel strong and confident.  I am in tune with what works for me and makes me feel good…so fall in love with what you love and you can use that to help you feel amazing and confident when you are wearing something you love too!

Choosing colors doesn’t have to be a hard thing – these simple steps can really help you find colors that work for you and make you feel good…

Look for colors no matter where you go and you will start to see them – in nature, in people, and as you see you them you will start to notice what makes you feel good – that’s what you need to go with!

As the Season Changes so do the Colors

“And the day came that the risk to stay tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom!”

My favorite season is and will always be summer, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the amazing colors in nature and clothing that appear as soon as Fall is on the horizon.

You will always find your typical Rust Brown, Mustard Yellow, Maroon Red, and even some Greens, but my absolute favorite thing to do when Fall comes around is add something a little unexpected.  As you know I just returned from a trip to England and while I was there I definitely paid attention to the colors in the stores.  I saw bright Pink (so I had to buy a pair of booties in that color), I found some amazing tights that I can’t wait to pull out, and many, many more colors and styles.

I have also been exploring the Nine West website and I have found some amazing jewel toned shoes and boots that I am sure are going to have to find a way to my closet 😉

So how do you add a pop of a more non-traditional color or pattern to your outfit?  I have found the easiest way is to follow the rule of tones…for example, if you are wearing earth tones – like Brown, Yellow or Orange, then you are going to want to find a color that works well with those colors.  Typically Red (in any shade) works best with earth tones.  If you are looking for a way to incorporate some of the jewel tones (like Kelly Green, Blues or Pinks) then they will work best with Black Navy, Grey, or White/Cream.  In fact, by adding these colors to the more neutral colors you are going to transform your look into something really bold and expressive. Sometimes being bold or expressive can be intimidating, so you could stick to just adding accessories, handbag, scarf or shoes in these colors so you can get used to standing out and then progress to taking the focus of your whole outfit to those the colors.

I know I have talked about starting with your shoes, and that is definitely they direction I go around 50% of the time, for the other 50% I focus on a piece of clothing that I really want to wear and I build around that.

I have wondered if I put just a little too much thought into what I wear, but I quickly dispel that thought because I know what a difference it has made in my life.  There have been times when being remembered was far too important for me to feel insecure about wondering what other people thought.  I have found success in my career, not just because I do a good job, but because people remember me.  Not just because of what I wear, but mainly because the way I present myself lets them know that I take myself seriously, I am 100% confident in my abilities and most importantly, I consider them and their needs.  If we make our lives and careers not just about what we can get out of it, but how we can help our clients and other people we work with more successful, then we also find reward and fulfillment.

So, with that being said…what are you going to do stand out this Fall?  Are you brave enough to try something new?  A new color?  A new style?  Are you bold enough to walk into a room knowing you are different in your own unique way and owning that?  I believe anyone can do it…it just takes one step!

Dare to be Bold

“It’s time to be bold about who you really are!”

In honor of Jack’s Sluggers baseball team who’s colors are Red and Black, I thought it fitting to post this amazing Red dress that I recently snagged on sale from H&M. As far as I’m concerned, you can never have too many Red dresses, especially when they are really comfy, sexy and stylish all rolled into one.  People talk about LBD all the time, well, I think we should start our own LRD trend 😉

I talked last week about not being afraid to look and feel sexy…I think as Women it’s really important for us to feel that good about ourselves, because what we think about ourselves is also what others see.  This style of dress is one that looks better if you have a flatter stomach or if you buy a larger size (it is clingy and you don’t want it accentuating areas you may not want people to notice, because trust me…people do notice when you are wearing a color and style like this one).

I love finding steals and this one for sure was one of them.  I found it for $15 at H&M which is practically free, so I think I also bought it in Navy.  H&M is one of the best stores on the high street for sales – they are always rotating through their styles so you don’t have to worry about seeing everyone else in the same styles.  I also love checking out the stores in other cities when I travel because they buy different styles there too.  I am still waiting for Zara to make it to Utah, although the app will work for now 🙂

I am sure you have all heard the quote from Robert Frost, the poet:  “Freedom lies in being bold”…I absolutely believe that.  I believe that mediocrity in anything is what prevents greatness.  I think it’s important for us to not be afraid to be bold, whether that is in trying new things & venturing out of our comfort zones, or just becoming more confident in ourselves & our abilities.  Whatever that looks like to you, even if it means that you take baby steps…be a little bit bolder every day.  It’s been my mantra ever since I started this blog because I am learning to do things I didn’t know that I didn’t know.  And guess what, I do feel more free.  I feel more confident, more satisfied, and definitely more fulfilled.  We don’t know what we’re capable of until we try…

Where are your favorite places to shop?  Do you prefer store or online shopping?  I will give a review of some of my favorite online shopping stores as well as my “go to” high street stores, but I would love to hear what yours are too.

Bold Colors

“Enjoy being bold, and if that is scary at first, marvel at your ability to walk through fear!”

While putting together the outfit in this post it occurred to me that sometimes bold Colors can be something that are a little overwhelming and sometimes avoided.  I have always been drawn to things that are bold and bright – just like me 😉 , but I realize that is not true with everyone else.

If you are someone that is intimidated by standing out too much perhaps wearing pants this bold isn’t for you, but the good news is that there are many other options!  You could try wearing bold accessories (necklace, bracelets, earrings or scarves), or a bright blouse/top or even adding a bold pair of shoes can be less scary.  Wearing  bold pants, a bold skirt or dress is much more noticeable than wearing a blouse, accessories or shoes.  The greater the area covered the more scary it can be.

As spring is quickly approaching add some colors into your wardrobe and walk with confidence!

Bold Patterns

“You were born to be real not to be perfect!”

Grey, cold days call for bold colors and patterns.  This amazing Lularoe skirt is so comfortable.  I love how the pattern is bold because it lets everyone know I am confident and not afraid to be different.

How bold are you?  Are you willing to try new things?  If the answer is yes, you should really reach out to my friend Jamey (@lularoepixie) for information on this style and others that she has available.  The skirt style is called “Cassie” and there are many different patterns available.

This is just one of the amazing pieces that she had, there are so many different outfits available – including dresses, different length skirts and an amazing vest that I will be featuring soon called “Joy”.

Yesterday’s outfit is a vast contrast to the one today, but that is what is great about clothes…you can be a different person and have a different style every day if you choose to! I love to alternate between bold, muted, monochrome, single color, etc. just to keep things fresh and unique. If you are someone that likes to stick to the same styles that’s OK – but maybe you could add some different styles. If you like to stick with specific styles, then perhaps try some different colors…

Whatever your preference, I just wanted you to know there are definitely options! You can express yourself the way YOU want to and that doesn’t have to be the same every day, trust me when I tell you, it will add some variety to your life if you change just the slightest thing, and we could all use a little change every once in a while!

Go and check out Jamey’s Instagram to find out which styles and colors she has available that would work for you!

The Perfect Compliment to Black

“A Stiletto is more than a shoe, it’s an attitude!”

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love wearing an all Black outfit with a pair of Red shoes.  To me, it is just like putting a cherry on top of the whole look…

Finding some great bold shoes, whether they are Red, or even some other bold colors doesn’t matter, so long as you have a pair that really stands out.  They can be pumps like the ones in my pictures, or block heels, booties or even wedges, whatever the look you are most comfortable with is fine…but find yourself an amazing pair of shoes to make your outfits stand out.

Sometimes you want one of those days where you want to throw something on and not be too concerned about it, so here’s a solution for one of those days.  Pick a simple, easy outfit, and add a pair of amazing shoes…and voila!  You have your amazing outfit.

You can see some examples of other amazing shoes at the bottom of this post, if you see some you like, all you need to do is click through and order yourself a pair (or even better, get someone to get them for you for Christmas – no guilt 🙂 )
