Be You – Be Different

“Being different isn’t a bad thing, it means you are brave enough to be yourself!”

There are so many things that make us different from everyone else, but we live in a world where it’s almost frowned upon to be different. The sad thing about that is that there are so many reasons that the world needs YOU just as you are, not someone trying to fit in or be like everyone else.

Being different, standing out, expressing yourself just as you are, that takes real courage…but most importantly it means YOU have to know who YOU are!

I don’t know if any of you remember that movie “Runaway Bride”? In that movie Julia Roberts was engaged at least 3 or 4 times and each time literally ran away from the wedding as the groom was standing on the altar. Nobody knew why she did it for a long time, in fact, she gained a reputation and it was newsworthy enough that a reporter went to her small town to write about it. Turns out that what she actually did was fit into a mold of exactly what she thought each of the grooms wanted her to be. Whatever eggs they liked, she liked too. In summary, she pretty much didn’t show up to any of the relationships as herself, and when the reality hit (on the wedding day) she couldn’t go through with it.

I have seen this so much in life, it’s so easy to fall into line with what we think everyone else wants us to be, so much so that we give up who we really are. The problem with that is that the real us is still inside just stuffed down somewhere out of sight, and it means that we can’t ever find complete fulfillment or happiness until we let her or him out!

I have always been a very strong person, but there have definitely been times in my life when I have been afraid to let people see who I really am – specifically in relationships for fear that they wouldn’t love me, or they would leave. I am not the type of person that can live like that, so at some point, usually when I couldn’t take it anymore, I would explode and pretty much blow the relationship anyway. Even with Brandon and I it took me a long time to realize that it was OK to be 100% myself.

I have learned that I don’t need permission to express myself, it doesn’t matter to me if everyone loves everything about me, because I have found that the more authentic and real I am, the more people love being around me anyway.

I love to express my feisty personality through my style, and I have found that the more I love me, the more I love who I am, the more happy I am. My style is uniquely me – and I will always keep it that way! In fact, the jacket that I’m wearing in this post is one that I had customized for me…I saw something similar on Pinterest and had my mum knit it and create my one exactly how I wanted it! What’s better than that?

Being unique is one thing that we all have in common, and it’s exactly what the world needs!

If you could do one thing today that you have been afraid to do, what would it be?

Top 10 Things you need in your Closet this Holiday Season

“Life is short, wear your party pants!”

Before I start, I wanted to let you know that it’s definitely not to late to start planning your holiday styles, party wear, and recovery wear (yes, after all the chaos we are going to need a little recovery time!)

There are a lot of things to plan, so does this seem like one more thing that you just don’t want to have to deal with?  I know there have been times when I have gone in my closet and just walked right out again because I haven’t known where to start…so here are some tips, ideas and styles that are really easy to duplicate to take some of the stress out of the holidays for you:

  1. Make sure you plan ahead…this doesn’t necessarily mean going shopping to get new things, but what it does mean is that sometimes if you lay out a few things on your bed to see how they look together, it’s going to help you decide what combinations you like the best.  I never try to plan an outfit for a special occasion when I am in a rush – even if I haven’t pulled out my clothes to look at, I have at least put them together in my mind (I know, I may or may not love thinking about clothes 😉 )
  2. Don’t try to wear something that is not comfortable for you to wear.  For example, if you are not comfortable wearing high heels, then don’t try to do it.  All that will happen is that you will feel awkward all night and want to take off your shoes.  Instead, find a pair of kitten heels (still feminine) or block heels that are easier to wear for longer periods of time.
  3. Make sure that what you are wearing expresses YOUR personality NOT someone you know or someone else you have seen wearing something that’s “really cute”…as you know, we are all unique, so when you are trying to be someone else not only will you feel like a fraud, but when people see you they are not going to know who you are.

With all of that being said, there are a few things that you are going to want to add to your closet this holiday season.  Don’t get me wrong I’m not necessarily encouraging you to go out shopping for yourself when you are still Christmas shopping (although sometimes it’s necessary to do that), but maybe you can put some things on your Christmas list or drop hints.  Even after Christmas there are lots of get-togethers and parties for the New Year, so even if you don’t have them in time for a Christmas party, it won’t be a bust!

Here are my Top 10 MUST HAVES for 2017:

  1. Something leopard print – whatever you choose (because not everyone is comfortable with a coat, a dress or shoes), make sure you that you rock it.  I have seen so many leopard tights, scarves, blouses, sweaters and purses plus many, many more things.  Pick one and have fun with it.
  2. Something sparkly – I love all the metallics, and they can be used in many different ways.  For example, I just bought some metallic liquid eyeshadow by Stila (from Sephora)…it is amazing and lasts all day.  It’s a great way to add sparkle without having to go over the top.  A great silver or gold top, pants, or shoes are great ways to add metallic into your wardrobe.
  3. Sock booties are my new favorite thing – I love how they fit to your legs and work with a skirt/dress, with jeans, or even under pants.  Versatility is key here, and they come in a variety of different styles and patterns.
  4. A great faux fur or fluffy coat – the reason why is that even if you are wearing something plain, by adding a really funky coat, you are going to make your whole outfit stand out.  Who doesn’t love the idea of being simple and still finding a way to be stylish?
  5. Sequins – what more needs to be said here?  Sequin earrings, sequin hair accessories, sequin leggings, or even sequin boots.  Find something again that expresses your personality, don’t wear the boots if you are more of an understated earrings kind of girl 😉
  6. A long kimono or thin cardigan -I love using these over pants, dresses or skirts.  They can just pull a whole outfit together and make it really funky.
  7. Velvet is still so huge.  It is such a comfortable and warm fabric, not to mention chic, so why not incorporate it into some of your outfits?
  8. Funky tights or fishnets.  Wearing a pair of unique tights with a dress or skirt this winter is not only necessary (at least here in Utah), but it is also a great way to make a statement.  I am always on the lookout for unique styles of tights, and love to incorporate them into my business and party style!
  9. A pair of chunky boots – there are definitely going to be those days that you are going to want to be able to walk and not have to worry about slipping, falling or just hating life because of your stiletto boots.  At the weekends or evenings, I love to wear a pair of comfy boots, but also look stylish, so find a pair that can be both for you.
  10. A great beanie or winter hat – I have never been a big hat person, but I am definitely learning to love beanies especially during the winter months.  I love how feminine some of the styles are now, and if you wear one with some accent jewels, patterns or even a pom pom it is going to look a little dressier!

So there you have it…my Top 10 of things everyone should have.  I have always been one of those practice what you preach kind of girls, so I wouldn’t tell you to do something that I didn’t do, so just know that all of these things I have tried and tested, and they work for me!

I don’t by any means expect anyone to be something they are not, so if don’t like or want to try any of these things, then you need to follow your gut.

Happy Holidays and more importantly – Happy Shopping!

Holiday Styling with Satin

“They can imitate your style but they can’t imitate your creativity!”

Following on from my previous post “Mixing Fabrics“…there are some that are must haves for Holiday parties or events.  You know, those fabrics that just call to you and as soon as you put them on you know you look good.

One of those fabrics is satin…it is such a feminine fabric, it is versatile and finally it is just stunning.  You may notice the booties in this post as being Pink, but the fact that they are satin makes them even more amazing.  The disco pants are also satin and because they are so stretchy they are very flattering – which is perfect for a Holiday party or event.  I see a lot of really cute dresses around this time of year, and that seems to be what everyone likes to wear for parties, but I like to change things up and put my own stamp on my outfit.  You can just as stunning in a great satin pant outfit as you can wearing a dress.

If you are not sure about disco pants like these because they seem a little too form fitting or edgy, then you can add a feminine top or sweater, like the ruffle one I am wearing, or if you want something a little longer add a kimono (see link below) with a simple top underneath.  Just because all the stores are pushing “Holiday dresses” doesn’t mean that is your only choice.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you shouldn’t wear one, just try some other options as well. 🙂

One of the biggest challenges when shopping for a specific fabric or color is knowing where to look, or if you buy online, which stores have great quality clothing.  With that being said, I have put some of my top satin styles and colors below and the great news is that you still have plenty of time to order before Christmas!

A Simple Guide to Mixing Fabrics

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us!”

‘Tis the season for luxurious fabrics and styles…in fact, the more sparkly, glittery, fluffy and cozy the better.  It can be really fun to mix patterns, fabrics and styles and create some amazing looks that will really help you stand out and be noticed during the Holiday season.

Deciding which fabrics work together can be a little overwhelming, so here are some simple guidelines that you can work with if you are a little unsure of what may or may not work well together:

  1. Don’t try to be too “matchy” – I have noticed that when I try to match my the fabrics of my outfit too closely it just ends up failing miserably.
  2. Choose only fabrics or prints that you are comfortable wearing – if you are not someone that likes to have themselves introduced before they even speak, you will probably want to steer clear of prints like leopard, snake or sequins.
  3. Mixing leather with satin or lace is always a great “go to” look because it adds an element of femininity and softens the whole leather look.  Of course leather can fall into that category of being one of those fabrics that you really have to be comfortable wearing, so make sure that if you are going to wear it, you are really going to “rock it!”
  4. For a really luxurious look, pairing velvet with fur is not only classy but it is also really warm and cozy.
  5. Adding a loose wool sweater over a form fitting knitted or satin midi length skirt and a pair of sock booties adds lots of different fabrics and textures and is perfect for a really cold business day!
  6. Experimenting can be really fun, but also overwhelming if you are not sure what really works for you. Before you try anything on, it is always a good idea to hold the fabrics up against each other, and then also up against your body.  That way you can see objectively by looking at it while you’re not wearing it and also in a mirror against your body and skin tone.

These are just a few ideas you could use yourself, and adapt to work for your own unique style.  The outfit I am wearing shows mixing leather, velvet, snakeskin, fleece, and satin which is a lot of different fabrics and patterns, but it all works.  Each one is different enough that they compliment each other.  Even if you used just two or three of these different fabrics the look would still be really classy.

There are definitely some styles and trends that are a little more versatile, whereas others are definitely more edgy.  If you are more of a risk taker, experimenting with furs, leather and satin are a great way to create some really unique looks.  I love to experiment with leather and fur, because I really believe that they can both be worn for so many different occasions and can really transform an outfit from ordinary to unique.

Wake up to Blue Skies…

“Look for something positive in each day, even if you have to look a little harder on some days!”

Yesterday I talked about how crazy it is that we get frustrated by things outside of our control, and how sometimes I feel down by the weather…

When I woke up this morning I loosed outside and while it is still chilly, I looked around and saw beautiful sunshine and blue skies.  What it made me realize is that no matter what challenges or struggles we have going on in our lives, there will always be a blue sky coming.  It can really be hard to keep a positive attitude when things aren’t great, but no matter how hard things can be, the only thing we really know for sure is that things always change.

This can be true for both positive and negative…I am sure you have experienced times when you have been really happy, finances are great, family is great, everything seems to be going the way you want it, and then suddenly something happens that derails you.  Or, you have been struggling, feeling really down, and then out of nowhere someone does something to help you or you find a light at the end of the tunnel.  It is not possible to be able to control everything happening in our lives, but we can certainly control how we reacts to it and how we feel about it.

So, as I woke up, saw the blue skies and sunshine, it gave me a sense of optimism that I can do and be anything I want to be.  I feel like I am able to see things more clearly when I feel that optimism and suddenly tasks that have been procrastinated are things I’m ready to take on – like organizing our storage room – YAY!  🙂

If you were able to let go of trying to control what could you accomplish?  Are you happy running on the hamster wheel over and over or are you ready to take back control of your life by controlling how you feel and how you choose to let things affect you?

I would much rather start off my weekend on a positive note…especially since when I am down it’s funny how it seems to affect all my boys.  They know that there is something going on with me and it makes them feel bad…which just proves that even if we think we are only affecting ourselves, our attitude and disposition affects others.

Remember…a negative mind will never give you a positive life!

Isn’t it Fascinating that we want to control the Weather?

“Anything you can’t control in life is teaching you how to let go!”

When I wake up on a cold, overcast, or rainy morning I have a hard time not letting myself feel a little down or even depressed.  While I consciously know that I most certainly don’t have the power to control the weather, it still sometimes leaves me feeling similar to Chicken Little where the sky is falling in!

It is almost an exercise in insanity to feel so down because of something so out of my control and scope of understanding, nevertheless, my body still feels this way.  I realize that not everyone feels like this about the weather, however, I am sure there are all times and things that make you feel inexplicably out of sorts. Knowing that the only solution to get through times like this is that you have to let go of control and realize that things are just happening for you, the key is to recognize when this is happening…

I still find myself sometimes worrying about things I shouldn’t, over-thinking, over-analyzing or even obsessing about things that clearly I have no way of influencing.  I am definitely starting to recognize when it happens more and more, and the more I become conscious of it, the more likely I am to be able to eliminate these habits.

Weather is just one example of something outside of our control, another huge cause of feeling frustrated is worrying about what other people are doing and how they are not doing things the way we want them to. As I sit here writing this post, my dog is outside and he’s barking at someone walking by or another dog out there, and I even found myself getting irritated and shouting at him.  Yes, I can shout at him and tell him to stop or bring him inside, but then he’s going to forget in a few minutes or he’s going to jump on the couch and start scratching at the door again.  Bottom line, I may be able to get him to stop for a while, but not until HE wants to!

I realized when I had kids that control is really just an illusion, but there are definitely times when I find myself jumping in and handling things for the boys when the best thing to do would be to let them figure it out themselves.  I am definitely not a mum that hovers enough to fall into the helicopter mom category, but I think that’s just because I work on catching myself when I have the urge to “fix” and force myself to take a step back a lot of the time.

Worrying about things outside your control is definitely one of the major stress causes in today’s world, so what if you could just allow yourself to let go and just enjoy the moment.

Today was a gloomy, rainy, cold day with some sleet and snow.  While I don’t like winter, I have to admit that I actually love how it looks with snow on the ground, blue skies and sunshines, even when it is cold. The real reason I don’t like winter is because it brings grey skies and in Utah we get an inversion in the valley – which I find ugly and dreary.  I did get through the day without too much frustration, but now I sit by a lovely warm fireplace with my feet up after eating a lovely fish and chips dinner.  I can feel all the stress that the gloom brought me just melting away…

If you can relate to any of these feelings or thoughts, and you are looking for a quick fix, i’ll let you into a trick that works for me…find something you love and move your focus away from the thing causing you frustration to that thing.  I love to spend time with friends, so sitting in a coffee shop with a great friend is a great remedy to the blues.  I also love to shop (I know, big surprise), so I sometimes take myself off to the mall and just wander around until I feel the thoughts just slip away – of course, if I see some great things while I’m there, I may have to buy them too!  Another great way to refocus is to sit by a lovely fire, curl up with a good book, watch a movie or spend time with your kids.

I am definitely a long way from being an enlightened being, but I feel that if I am constantly working on improving myself and my attitude, things will start to get easier and eventually I may even be strong enough to kick some habits!

How to be Fashionable

Confidence is in knowing that your fashion story is YOURS alone!

Fashion makes a statement about us…

“Be a Flamingo in a flock of pigeons!”

My Fashion Story

I always thought that being fashionable meant that you had to follow all the latest trends, and just basically blend in with what everyone else is doing…

What I have realized is that I can decide what is fashionable.  No matter the season, I don’t like every new trend that comes out (especially since as I am getting older I see more and more of the old trends that I used to see coming out again and again!)  It’s crazy that the styles I hated, the ones that I would never be caught dead wearing, and the ones that seemed to be the least flattering still seem to circle back around.  I remember looking at a picture of myself after having Dalton (my oldest), he was only 6 weeks old and we were in Disney World, I was wearing high waisted short-shorts, and a striped tank top that REALLY didn’t flatter me in any way!  So crazy to think that just because a style is IN that you should have to wear it.  As I have matured, I can tell you that I decide what is fashion for me, and I interpret it my own unique way.

I love seeing a new style and trying to figure out ways that I can adapt it to be my own.  I like to be classy/chic and everything in between.  The one thing that is always consistent is that I like to be feminine and always, always I avoid things that make me look trashy.  I don’t dress up every day, but when I have an important meeting or I know that a first impression is important, I definitely dress accordingly.  Even when I dress down I make sure that I am no sloppy.  If I am wearing sweats they are not creased and I wear with them a t shirt that is flattering.  Jeans are something I love to wear but I don’t wear them for work if they have holes or are distressed.  If I do wear jeans for work, I make sure that the blouse or top I wear is feminine and classy and more than likely the first thing that people notice.  I make my outfits memorable – but in a good way 🙂

Shoes are my staple – I don’t believe you can ever have too many, and they can really make a statement about you, so choose them wisely.  Sometimes heels can get damaged and start to look worn out, so take care of your shoes…if you take care of them, they will take care of you!

I read fashion magazines, I check out blogs, I look online at some of my favorite stores, I like to go on shopping expeditions whenever I travel somewhere to see what is available in other places, and most importantly, when I see things, I think about how they will work for my body type, coloring, age, and if they would be appropriate for me to wear for business, casual or more formal events.  Sometimes I try new things and get it wrong, and sometimes it works out, but the key is I TRY…Having the confidence to try something new and see if it works for you is half the battle, with the final piece being that if you get it wrong, don’t worry about what other people might say and think.  I have found that not everyone is going to like my style and what I wear all the time, and you know what, I am so great with that…I wear what I wear and do what I do for me only!  Because I feel that way, I have an air of confidence and it shows – and that is what people are drawn to!

What is your Fashion Story?

We all have our own fashion story, even if that story is that fashion or style is not your focus, or you don’t want to or can’t afford to go shopping all the time!  Whatever your story, I would love to hear all about it.  You can either comment or email me directly by clicking the CONTACT link on the left toolbar if you don’t want to share with everyone.  I am always looking for ways to improve my style game, and would love to help you with yours too…

I look forward to hearing your fashion story to see if I can help you be fashionable with the clothes you have and up your style game!
