Business like a Boss Lady

She knew the power of her mind, so she programmed it for success!

Just in case you missed my Video Podcast, I wanted to talk a little about Business Style and how it doesn’t have to be boring.

I think this was one of the most important realizations I had when I was working in Corporate America. YES – there are rules, but NO – it doesn’t mean you can’t adapt them and still be business appropriate.

I am a firm believer in that fact that you can look amazing even if you are not in a business suit or the traditional styles of old business. I’m not condoning breaking the dress code at the company you work at, but I have found that dressing appropriately for business doesn’t mean that you can’t still march to the beat of your own drum.

As women we have so much more opportunity to create our own look than men do, so why not take advantage of all the amazing offerings the world of fashion has for us?

Here are a few of my own suggestions and things I did that helped me feel great about my business style:

  • Incorporate bright colors – yes, you can add a bright colored blouse but what about really stepping it up and adding a pair of bright colored pants or a skirt. Red is always my favorite go-to, but there are so many others like green, purple, orange and yellow – or pretty much any color that is bold and stands out! Bold patterns are always find to wear too – like these cute joggers that look professional yet funky!
  • Add a little lace – it is so feminine and looks so professional as well. By adding something lace to your look, you will immediately elevate the look from ordinary to fabulous.
  • You don’t have to stick to traditional fabrics – try adding some leather or velvet. Gone are the days when wearing something less traditional is a bad thing. Leather was once thought to be edgy but now it really can be made to look feminine and classy by wearing a pretty blouse, and some stand out shoes!
  • Don’t forget the details – accessories can be the thing that elevate an otherwise ordinary outfit. By adding some cute jewelry, a scarf or carrying a bag that is fun – you will immediately draw peoples eyes to those pieces. Which means, if your business style is understated, you can make it more sassy and fun by adding some gorgeous accessories. Beware though – in this situation, less is more. Don’t over-do it…keep it classy!
  • You know my philosophy about shoes…well, it applies to business style as well. When you wear a pair of shoes that is colorful, bold or unique that’s what people more often than not will remember. I’ve talked about how someone’s shoes are usually the first thing I notice…well, I can tell you that I am not the only one 😉
  • Business IS all about looking professional – you having a jacket handy is a good thing…but that doesn’t mean that the jacket has to be ordinary. In fact, finding jackets that are unique is always fun for me – like the blazer I’m wearing here with the leather accents. Professional – YES! Unique – YES!

A lot of dressing for business in a way that still expresses your personality is really about changing your mindset. It’s about being open to exploring differentiations and creating your own interpretations of the rules.

None of the pictures I’ve posted are inappropriate business style, but can you agree that they are my unique style? I have found that I am happiest when I am not conforming to the opinions of others, but rather adapting situations to suit my style – but doing it in a way that is still social acceptable and fun! Sounds like a win/win doesn’t it?

Are you ready to explore your business style?

Love your Life

Be so busy loving your life that you have no time for hate, regret and fear!

OK – so we all know consciously that we only have one life to live and that we need to make the most of it…but I sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in what is NOT great, what’s wrong and the fact that our life may not be looking exactly like our expectation of how it should look.

When you were little did you have an idea of what your life was going to look like? Did you imagine yourself with 2.5 children, the perfect spouse, and a lovely well kept home? I know that I had an idea, or even an expectation, of what my life should look like. I wanted the marriage, the children, the unconditional love, the career, basically the fairytale…but I found out very early on that my life wasn’t going to take that path. I started out WITHOUT a fairytale relationship, became a single mum, moved from England by myself to the U.S. to create a life for myself and Dalton, my son. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pay the bills, I juggled paying the utilities, electricity and gas bills and had one or other of them disconnected at least once. It was a challenge, but I was up for that challenge!

I was so attached to the idea of having that perfect life that at times I felt like a failure. I felt like I wasn’t enough. I felt like my life sucked! Then something happened to make me see things differently. I had some friends that made me start to believe in myself again. Through talking me through what I DID have and make me start appreciating it again, I was able to start believing that I could have the life I wanted. It started with me being more than OK with where I was at that time, in fact, I started to feel that even if I never met anyone and spent the rest of my life with just Dalton – then that was enough for me!

Things didn’t start out ideal or PERFECT, but after a few years, I met Brandon and everything really changed. After a few more kids, we created the family that both Dalton and I had always wanted (although I’m pretty sure Dalton always wanted a sister, but I gave him 3 brothers instead 😉 ) .

Our family life has not always been a bed of roses, but it’s still amazing. Through the personal growth and development business that Brandon started we both grew stronger, happier and more fulfilled…but not without consistent effort, and that’s what I want to talk about today…

Being happy and loving your life when everything is going well is easy to do. It’s finding joy, fulfillment and happiness through the hard times – because there will always be hard times.

So how do you feel happy and fulfilled when all the cards seem to be stacked against you?

I found that the first step was to believe that I deserved to be happy no matter what. I embraced that mindset and a funny thing happened – I actually BECAME happy. My focus was on gratitude for what I DID have instead of what I DID NOT have! It may seem a little hard to believe but I am 100% certain that by appreciating how amazing my life was, focusing on my love for Dalton, my love for myself and my love for being in the U.S…that’s what allowed me to open the door for even greater things.

Are you in a place where you feel down or you’re not finding joy in your life? Does it seem like life is against you?

Life can be a dark place if we focus on dark thoughts, but it can also bring an amazing light into our lives when we focus on beautiful things, on appreciating what we have, what we’re grateful for and feel fulfilled knowing that we ARE ENOUGH.

I just wanted to share a little about what brought me here and why I will always focus on gratitude…

If you’re looking to improve any area of your life, I know with 100% certainty that whatever you focus on you get more of…so why not focus on all that is positive, good and amazing about yourself and this life?

Add a little Snake Print to your Life

It takes courage to mix things up and conviction to push a look to its limit. When you do the reward is personality, flair and passion!

My Grandma was one of my style icons, and I loved her because her whole life she expressed herself through her style and didn’t worry about being different. My Grandad worked for a shoe company in England and because of that she had sooo many pairs of shoes, and was always ahead of the trends (maybe this is where I got my love for shoes from). She wore bold fabrics, colors and styles and was one of the first people I ever saw wearing animal print. She knew the power of style and confidently expressed herself in a way that made people sit up and pay attention!

Because she had such a huge impact on my life, I have always wanted to be the same way…try new things and stand out from the crowd.

Snake print or Python print is so huge right now, and I know if my Grandma was still around she would be sporting all the latest looks. It’s not that it is brand new, but I do think it’s a great transitional print that can take us through all the seasons this year. Because it is such an amazing print you are going to see it in most high street stores and online, in a variety of different styles.

Just like no two leopard prints are the same – snake print can come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and styles. I am mixing 2 different colors of snake print in my outfit today, and I love the effect because it just amplifies the look even more. I love the mix of colors and the depth that it brings.

At one point in my life I might have considered it to be a little much to wear 2 different colors of the same print, but what I have found as I get older is that I kind of like coloring outside of the lines…not letting the fear of what others think affect how I dress, what I do and who I am 😉

Another way to wear more than one print is to choose different prints (snake, leopard, zebra etc), mix the patterns but wear them in the same color. It’s OK if you’re not quite there yet…stick to what makes you feel comfortable!

I have linked a few of my favorite snake print pieces below – including the pants I’m wearing

The Power of Femininity

I have linked my entire look at the end of this post…check them out – some great sale pieces to look for!

The thing that women still have to learn is that no one gives you power. You just take it!~

There are some mornings that I wake and want to feel a little softer, a little more gentle and feminine. I used to think that by doing that or acting that way it meant that I was soft or weak, but what I have found is that it makes me more approachable, less intimidating and it is a hat that we as women need to wear at times and not be ashamed of.

I’m not saying that’s it’s about acting different from who we are, but if we have that inside of us, that piece of us that likes to dress up (kind of like when we were little girls) wearing something pretty, frilly and feminine – then that’s what we shouldn’t be afraid to do.

There are some days when it is not the type of day I know I’m going to have, so I dress appropriately…but on those days where I feel like I don’t want to just be a #bossbabe, but want to feel in touch with my inner feminine side, this is how I dress.

I don’t care who you are, there are multiple personas inside all of us, and channeling them all I think it vital. Do you act differently at work than at home? I know I do. At work I am more like a CEO and at home I need to be there emotionally for my family. Dressing in a feminine way is just a way of expressing that different persona inside of you. Are you with me?

Certain styles and fabrics just scream femininity – here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Ruffles – wearing a pencil skirt is sexy, but when you add ruffles, it just softens the whole vibe. Not removing the effect, just making it a little more subtle.
  2. Lace – is classic, delicate and always a great feminine look.
  3. Embroidery – especially floral embroidery is a way to add a feminine touch to a piece that may have just been ordinary.
  4. Up do – when I really looking to amp up my feminine style, I like to wear my hair up. I like it to look soft rather than edgy, and in today’s post I added a gold bun cuff to add a little extra something.
  5. Velvet has the versatility to be both feminine, luxurious and sexy. It may not be considered a fabric for spring and summer, but I always find ways to add it in if I really feel like my outfit needs it. For example – I have a really cute skinny pink velvet scarf that when worn with a leather jacket and jeans can add just a small touch of femininity.
  6. Patterns – floral is obviously feminine but there are so many other patterns that can add to your feminine style. Such as: eyelet (or broderie anglaise), smaller brightly colored geometric patterns (especially when I think about African fabrics), brocade, stripes and hearts.

Obviously these aren’t the only way to create a feminine looking style, but they are definitely some to consider. If you have any questions about a fabric, pattern or style, don’t hesitate to contact me and I will answer you!

What does success mean to you?

Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules and build a life you’re proud to live!

There are so many definitions for success – for some it could mean being happy in whatever it is that you do.  For others it is tied to income or status, or even it could mean helping others.  Whatever your definition is, there is one thing that is absolutely vital in order to achieve your level of success.  You need to surround yourself and associate with people that think the same way as you do, because when you spend a lot of time with people, you start to emulate their characteristics – so pick the ones that think like you do, that have similar goals and most importantly, people that will lift you up rather tear you down or drain your energy!

As you know, I have changed the career that I had for 20 years, so things have definitely changed to say the least!

Here are some key things that I use in my life to stay motivated and feel successful:

  1. One thing that is a constant for me is that I get up every morning, get dressed (nicely) and go to my office. It’s not that I couldn’t work from our home office, but I have found for ME, I like the dressing up and going out part…
  2. I have found that the more passionate I am about something the more likely I am to put forth the most amount of effort into making it successful – so loving what I do every day is vital. Even when I am doing tasks I may not like, I tell myself I am doing it BECAUSE…and that because could be something as simple as “I want to feel proud of myself” or “I want to have the money to travel” etc…
  3. I am not afraid to try new things or take risks – it is sometimes easy to talk yourself out of something because it is not comfortable or scary.  You will not always get the results you want, but you certainly won’t grow unless you try new things and take risks. This is one that is very real for me right now – with the launch of my video podcast, things are definitely uncertain but HEY! I’m going with it 😉
  4. I have 100% confidence in myself that I will be successful.  If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will believe in you.  It doesn’t mean that every time you are going to get the result immediately that you want, but it does mean that sometimes you take a different path and find success in other ways.
  5. I always make sure that I take care of myself.  I have a busy life with a career, kids and volunteer work, but I always make sure that my cup is always at least partly full because if it isn’t, I can’t be there for anyone else. Self care and vacations are two very important things for me and, you can just ask anyone that knows me – especially about the vacations, I don’t ever sacrifice them!
  6. Finally, I take my relationships in business and my personal life very seriously – I am extremely grateful for everyone that I have and make myself available as much as possible to ensure that I continue to foster those relationships!

Mornings are hectic in my house as I am sure they are in yours, so taking the time on appearance, or spending time to make sure you are presenting yourself in the best way is something that can be neglected or at least not a priority.  I don’t think that I can say this enough – the better you feel about yourself, the better people are going to feel about you.  It doesn’t mean that you have to wear a ton of makeup, dress to the nines every day, but it does mean that you need to feel good about however you look.  Holding your head high when you walk into a room can change the entire dynamic of a situation…

Today’s outfit is one that makes me smile – makes me feel sassy (which I love to feel) and most importantly makes me hold my head high knowing that I feel good about myself…after all, when we love ourselves and feel good…that’s what others see!

Have fun with Accessories

Accessories are like the perfect spice. They compliment what is already there…

Yes – I do believe that shoes are the most important part of an outfit.
No – that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing you can think about!

I love spending time finding great accessories that can help make an outfit pop – in fact, aside from changing a pair of shoes, accessories are the easiest and most noticeable ways to affect how you look. By adding a great pair of earrings you can achieve an immediate style pop. A bag can be the thing that draws the eye and even easier, now that spring is here and summer around the corner, add a fabulous pair of sunnies.

You can shop a similar bag to the cute backpack I’m wearing by clicking here

I always have so much fun shopping for accessories (OK, I admit it, I pretty much have fun shopping for ANYTHING)…but for accessories, it’s an easy one, you can just buy whatever and then find things to go with it. Earrings are a personal favorite of mine – I definitely love statement earrings, especially when I am wearing my hair up.

If you are looking for a way to “up” your style game, accessories are the perfect way to do it. Buy a fabulous pair of earrings or necklace (find some of my top picks at the end of this post that you can shop, a pair of fun sunnies (shop mine right here), or even a set of bead bracelets or bangles for your summer styling (see the end of the post to shop more of my picks).

Denim & Florals

What makes things memorable is that they are meaningful, significant and colorful!

I can feel optimism in the air in anticipation for Spring and the beauty it brings. It is the perfect time to bring out some floral patterns, add a little color into your life, and feel the vibrancy of the season.

As I was growing up I was never a big fan of floral patterns, or even the color pink, but I can tell you that as I am getting older, I embrace my femininity and welcome any style that allows me to feel feminine, classic and confident. Of course, I also like to be uniquely me, so by adding a little denim, it was the way for me to show my style while embracing the femininity of this dress.

The amazing thing about floral patterns is that there are SO MANY to choose from. There are ones with large, tropical flowers and ones with smaller blossoms – both of which can have a bright or subdued undertone, and can fit your style perfectly. If your style personality is a little less bold, then stick to muted tones, and smaller flowers, whereas if you are a little more willing to let it all out, you could try some patterns that include reds, yellows and cobalt blue…depending on which color best suits your skin tone.

As we have been planning our spring break trip with the kids, I have been doing a little shopping (both online and in stores) and I have been excited to see that a lot of stores are already adding these prints (and they’re not all dresses). I found a few of my current favorites and linked them below – you can shop them by clicking the links.

The little denim jacket I am wearing (which is a little different and more dressy than a typical denim jacket) is one I had in my closet, but I have found some similar ones and linked them below. Honestly there is always a time I love to pull out a denim jacket…so having one to me is a wardrobe essential.

My shoes are again a pair I already had but I loved pairing the polka dots with the floral dress, to add even a little more sass. Mixing patterns is still something I am learning, it kind of goes against everything we have learned…but I have to tell you it’s been really exhilarating and fun – so why not give it a try! Because here’s the thing, nobody REALLY knows what does and doesn’t work, so even if you aren’t sure, there is a very low chance that you will get it wrong 🙂

This Monday is beautiful and sunny here in Salt Lake, and I am excited to start breaking out even more florals – what styles get you excited?

Shop your Closet

You can’t change what’s going on around you until you start changing what’s going on within you!

While it would be wonderful, I realize that shopping every time we have somewhere to go or something to do is not reasonable, which is why sometimes shopping in our closets can be so much fun too! Sometimes I am amazed at the things I find, and it gives me the opportunity to create even more styles that are unique to me!

We are approaching spring pretty quickly here which means that the weather is changing (hopefully), and therefore the clothes we wear will also change. At the beginning of a new season I love to go through my closet, pull out clothes that I had from last year and put together some combinations just using those pieces I already own. I start out by picking out a single piece and finding funky, different combinations that will work with that piece. It’s a great way to recycle what we have from previous years or seasons without looking like we are just wearing the same thing over and over. For example, if I have a top that I have worn with a specific pair of pants or skirt in the past, I try it with jeans or I add something else to make it different (like a scarf or a vest/cardigan).

As I am sorting through my clothes from previous seasons I also like to donate some as well – leaving me room to go and buy a few more pieces that are specific for this year. I don’t ever get rid of everything completely but I have a rule – if I haven’t worn it for at least one season, it’s time for someone else to have the opportunity to wear it 🙂

Since we remodeled our house a few years ago, I have a good sized closet, but that doesn’t stop me from packing away things I know I won’t be able to wear during a season. In fact, one of my most favorite things to do is to pull out my spring/summer clothes that have been packed away and find some gems I had forgotten about. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I have things in my closet that I have absolutely no recollection of (and I have been known to throw bags in there and never wear things)…
With all of that being said, shopping in my closet can actually like just regular shopping. Even if I find things I have worn before, I take the time to fall in love with them again by creating whole new looks! Do you store your seasonal clothes, shoes and bags?

The green velvet pants I am wearing in this post actually have a green loose fitting jacket, but I wanted to mix things up a little for a colder day. The brown belt and leopard shoes add something a little different, and draw their own attention. Adding a different pair of shoes or a simple accessory like a belt is a great way to create a new vibe without having to think too hard. Because winter is drawing to a close here in Utah, even though the weather can’t seem to make up it’s mind, I am cycling through things I know I won’t want to or be able to wear for a while.

Velvet is not typically a fabric for warmer months, so I am making the most of wearing things that are more appropriate for cold days. However, I will admit that my trusted leather jacket in this picture is something I wear in EVERY season, it’s my go to when I am not sure what the weather will be like. When I travel 9 times out of 10 I take it with me (just in case) and I haven’t regretted it once!

You can shop my look and similar by clicking the links below. The best thing, the green velvet is ON SALE!

What Makes you Feel Feminine

When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid!

No two people are exactly the same, we all like different things, we all enjoy spending time doing different things and different things make us feel good about ourselves.

In a world where as women we have long been known as the weaker sex, softer, less aggressive, more of a nurturer, etc., it doesn’t mean that we have to give up ourselves in order to look and feel feminine. I will admit that for the longest time I considered femininity to be a weakness, but what I have realized is that it is actually a power. Femininity is a tricky thing because it’s not something that you can just go after aggressively because that essentially kills the whole feminine vibe, it is something that you have to gently, softly and cautiously attract to yourself…so how do you do that?

I think that because we are all so different, there are different things that make us feel feminine, but there is also a good chance that how one person feels feminine may also carry a lot of weight with another person. Here are a few things that I use, what I call on when I want to feel feminine:

  1. First things first, I don’t allow myself to think of femininity as a negative thing. I call it my superpower and I allow myself to take on it’s persona.
  2. I am a very type A personality, I am driven and I am a boss lady, but when I want to feel feminine I don’t allow those of my traits to take over. I allow myself to feel vulnerable and let my empathy take over.
  3. Wearing certain clothes can definitely affect how I feel and there are certain things that make me feel more feminine than others. Such as, lace, velvet, floral patterns, and soft lines in the design of a piece. Take the blouse I am wearing in this post – it flows, it’s soft and it gives the impression of gentleness.
  4. There are certain hairstyles that scream femininity. I always feel feminine when I pull my hair back in a chignon, soft curls and waves can have the same effect.
  5. The most important thing that I remember when I want to feel feminine and not “scare” people by being a boss lady is that I don’t have to be right all the time. It is especially hard when I know that I know something and I want to tell people that what I know is right, or I want to correct people, or just push my opinion…I know that if I do any of those things, it will have the exact opposite effect!

Feeling and looking feminine isn’t just about what you wear, it’s so much more. When I see models in magazines and they look really feminine and soft, I often wonder if that is what they are really like. Femininity is about letting your inner sensitive self come out (unless of course you are just planning on taking a picture and not interacting with anyone all day). I have found that the best connections I have made in my life are those that are based not on me being pushy or bold, but more about me being gentle, listening and being there for someone else. It doesn’t mean that you can’t create amazing connections if you are strong or bold, it just means that you might turn people off that are not quite as strong as you if you don’t approach them in a more gentle way first.

I am a strong woman, I love being strong, I love challenges and I love taking on things that scare me, and one of the biggest challenges I have had in my life is to know when to be gently strong. I honestly didn’t think it was a real thing, but what I am finding is that in my strength I have found a whole new level of strength that comes from being empathetic and loving.

Of course it also doesn’t hurt to look feminine, because I’m not going to lie, Brandon does appreciate it the most when I am sensitive and vulnerable. In fact he has told me that he feels the closest connection to me when I am gentle – way more than when I am working on my sexy vibe. Crazy to think that he might not be looking for what society has taught us that men like the most. He wants me to be real, relatable, vulnerable, sensitive and loving – and if that’s what creates the best connection between us, then that is what I want to nurture more than anything!

Thank Goodness for Warm Jackets

Life was always a matter of waiting for the right moment to act

I don’t know if I’ve been feeling the cold more since I came back from my birthday trip, or it’s just been A LOT colder, but I can tell you, taking pictures has been pretty painful 🙁 . It probably doesn’t help that my whole family, including me, has been sick all week with the flu.

It seems like we get moments of optimism where the sun shines, it gets up above 50 degrees and I start craving riding my mountain bike again. Of course, the foothills are still covered in snow, so I realize that it won’t be around the corner, but I do at least get hope. Then, just like this week, it snows, snows again and gets to temperatures in single digits or the teens.

Are you anything like me where you have a hard time thinking about style and fashion when you’re really cold? I find myself just wanted to wrap up in thermals and not leave the house (if only that were possible). Unfortunately, because it isn’t possible, I find myself searching my closet trying to come up with ways to create looks that make me happy while at the same time trying to not freeze to death – LOL.

A good jacket definitely helps, but when the wind is blowing hard and you have to stand outside for more than 5 minutes, the thickness of your pants and the amount of skin you are showing becomes more and more important. I know when I am going somewhere like skiing or sledding I am always really prepared but I find myself not quite so prepared for day to day activities.

This outfit that I’m wearing was perfect for a workday, but not so much for standing outside taking pictures – which of course I had to do because the lighting was just right.

I am linking the details of my outfit (the top is sold out but I have linked some similar), and the jacket is ON SALE so such a great deal. Click the links below to shop any of the pieces of my outfit.

Plans for the weekend: Sleep, clean, shop (ordering delivery from Costco because I hate going there at the weekend), and relax.

What do you have planned?
