Strut with Confidence into the Weekend!

“I am confident because I can admit who I am, what I’ve done and love myself for who I’ve become!”

When you hear the word strut what does it make you think about?  It reminds me of what models do on a runway, or what a really confident person does instead of just walking…

Of course to model on a catwalk or runway you have to feel pretty self-assured and confident, so where do you get that confidence from?

We all come from different backgrounds, we all look different, we all have different personalities and we all like different things…so what makes one person more confident than another?  After having 4 boys I can tell you that a certain amount of that confidence is something you’re born with (because although all my boys are self-assured, some have it more than others), but a lot of your confidence comes from what you are told when you are young – either your parents or people you interact with tell you things that you can choose to believe or not.  I have a brother that is one of the most loving, caring, amazing people I know, but for some reason a lot of his life he hasn’t really believed that himself.  It could be that he had some experiences early on in his adulthood that shaped him, or it could also just be that sometimes we don’t feel worthy or good enough to love ourselves to the extent we need to so that we feel good about himself.  I can tell you that he is good looking, very fit, very intelligent and would do anything for anyone, believes and encourages those around him, but for some reason he hasn’t for a long time believed that he could be or do anything he set his mind to.  I feel like know he is coming out the other side of that lack of confidence, but it caused me to wonder where confidence really does come from.

We were raised in the same home (although some might say being a girl and boy in the same home isn’t the same), we were loved the same (at least I think so), and we were given the same chances and opportunities. The biggest thing I can see on the surface is that he is more sensitive than I am and got hurt a lot easier than I did…Being caring and sensitive is obviously a wonderful thing, but I have this part in me that when someone does something to me, says something to me, or tries to hurt me…it kind of fuels me even more. In the fight, flight or freeze scenario I am a fighter, I will come out swinging…

Because I love my brother so much I have always been amazed at how he couldn’t see himself how I and everyone else around him saw him…which is an amazing, talented, loving and caring man.

So, as I contemplated where confidence truly comes from, I came to the conclusion that it is a choice.  It truly is a decision to fight for yourself, believe in yourself, trust yourself, and most importantly love yourself.  If we don’t do these things for ourselves then why would anyone else want to do them for us. Essentially we teach people how to treat us – and that comes from how we treat ourselves.

It’s almost a cycle, the more confident you feel, the more great things you attract to yourself, which in turn gives you more confidence.  So how do you make that choice to feel confident?  There have definitely been times in my life when things have happened to me where it has caused me to doubt my value, and honestly the only thing that has helped me is focusing on one or two things that I truly can appreciate and love about myself and feel grateful for.

I can promise you, no matter where you want to go, what you want to accomplish and who you truly want to become, if you start by loving and appreciating yourself and all the amazing unique things you bring to this life, the more likely you are going to be to accomplish them.

So if you want to make this really simple, if you have a hard time finding something you can appreciate about yourself, you can start with taking care, and pride in how you look.  It doesn’t mean you have to go out and spend a ton of money on makeup, beauty products, clothes, shoes or bags, it just means making the most of what YOU have!  As I get ready in the morning, I am always conscious about making sure I like what I see in the mirror (not because I am vain and love looking at myself), but because when I know I have made an effort I can strut and walk more confidently…

Give it a try…I think you’ll like what you see 🙂

Not Fools Gold

“You did not wake up today to be mediocre!”

Success can be viewed in many different ways, but there is one thing that is a common denominator when it comes to success and that is CONFIDENCE.

Having confidence in your abilities, your appearance, your presentation and your passion are all things that are vital to your success.  It is kind of a formula…not everyone is going to feel as confident as others in their abilities or their passion, but they may have confidence in their presentation.  One thing that I have found is that no matter what I am feeling inside, if I dress the part, walk with determination and talk in an educated manner, I am going to see greater results.  Because we are all different, we will have varying confidence percentages of confidence in different areas (yes, I know this sounds like a Math class but I promise it will make sense soon :)).  There are some days that I know I feel and look great and somehow that manages to make me feel more secure in what I am presenting when I meet with clients. Other days, I may have had a rough night with kids (it happens to all of us), or I may just not have as much energy, and those are the days that I know I am not going to have the best results.

I hold myself to extremely high standards so I know when I am not doing everything that I can, and that is in every area of my life.  When I have my game face on, I know I can do anything I really set my mind to!

You may ask yourself what does this have to do with what I’m wearing in this outfit…well, here’s how I’ll bring it back: Being bold enough to wear bright colors and Gold requires a certain level of confidence – not everyone has it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look great and most importantly feel great about yourself.

If you are one of the bold, then there are some amazing styles, colors and metallics out right now that are great for summer, great for those days that you need a “pick me up” and most importantly, great as confidence builders (because when you take the step to wear something bright and bold, it changes how you feel about yourself and how other people view you!

Bright and Bold

“Beautiful things don’t ask for attention!”

You can alway be guaranteed to make a statement when you wear a bright/bold color.  The dress is this post is another great find from Shein (click here to check out the site for yourself), the bell sleeves and great color are what drew my attention to it!

Even though it’s a simple shift dress I kept the accessories simple with a simple Gold and pearl Kate Spade chain, Gold and pearl earrings and the best part, Gold sandals!!

This outfit is enough without having to add very much – in fact, I have always been a “less is more” kind of girl :). I prefer to keep things simple to make sure the outfit is classy and not gaudy!

Planning your Outfit…

“A girl knows her limits, but a wise girls knows she has none!”

Today’s outfit shows the versatility of denim.  I love finding different ways to wear denim – in fact, I actually have a business suit that is made of denim fabric and it looks fabulous.   These denim culottes are comfortable, classy, stylish and unique.  When you think of denim it is not very often that people think of culottes, and that is why I like them.  Spring and summer are great times to add some denim into your closet…

Over the years I have developed a plan that helps me put together my outfits.  If you are a “fly by the seat of your pants” kind of girl…then you need to read this:

  • I have always been a planner when it comes to what I am going to wear for an occasion, but what about when the weekend flys by and before you know it Monday is here and you have no idea what you are going to wear?  There are definitely occasions where this could happen, which is why I like to take about 5 minutes at night picking out what I am going to wear the following day.  I partly do this because I would much rather have 5 more minutes in bed than pick out an outfit in the morning, but also because I think much more clearly than when I am having to creep around inside my closet because Brandon is still sleeping 🙂  Choosing what you are going to wear is a very important decision, so planning is absolutely necessary unless you are never in a hurry or don’t ever have anywhere important to go!
  • Another important consideration when putting together an outfit is where you are going and who you will be seeing.  If you are on the fence about whether you should wear something casual or dressy, it is better to err on the side of caution and dress up a little more.  You are less likely to draw attention to yourself as being overdressed than you are if you are under-dressed.
  • Invest in some basics or staples that fit you really well.  You can build an outfit using these and it will always look put togehter because of the time and consideration you have put into buying quality basics that work for your body type.  For example, if you have a great fitting pair of jeans you can add just about anything to that outfit and it will look amazing…\
  • Always have at least one item that really stands out.  Whether it is a great purse or bag that makes people notice, or a pair of shoes that cause stares, every woman should have that one piece that draws attention!

If you implement even just one of these ideas, you will notice that your style choices and outfits will come together much more smoothly.  I’m not saying that you need to spend hours considering what you are going to wear the next day, but believe me when I tell you that people notice when someone has taken the time to choose their outfit versus someone who just threw it together.  Question is, how do you want to be remembered?  I know my answer…

When things aren’t quite Perfect…

“You are imperfect.  Permanently and inevitably flawed and you are beautiful!”

One thing that I have really been working on is the ability to not expect perfection.  I have always been a person that puts extremely high expectations on myself and because of that I tend to expect the same of others.  The problem with that is that sometimes I don’t get the results that I want and I become frustrated and angry.

As you can imagine this can cause problems in relationships, in business and with my kids…so, with that being said, it is a constant battle that I am working on improving.  Today I posted a video on Facebook and Instagram talking about something one of my boys noticed about me, and guess what, I am OK with the fact that I am not perfect.  I am clearly OK with laughing at myself about it and working on improving rather than worrying about what others think, just making a shift internally! 🙂

As I did the shoot that I am featuring today, the wind was blowing, I had my eyes closed in some of the pictures, but I am posting one anyway…

I very often scrutinize my pictures and make sure that I pick the very best ones, so that when I post on social media and on my blog, that I look the best I can. Now I realize that is not reality so just for fun, I included a picture with my eyes closed where I am far from perfect. As the wind is blowing my hair is blowing all different directions, but it doesn’t change how great I feel about myself and how successful I am!

The video even did not make me look the best I have, but I have a commitment that I am overcoming these things that could hold me back, and when I come out the other side, I may not be as polished as I could be, but I will be REAL!

We all have beliefs and thoughts that hold us back, but I promise you if you choose to face them, your life will be fuller and you will feel better about yourself.

It’s almost the end of the week and I feel great because I know I am be authentic and making my life better 🙂

Don’t forget to Accessorize

“Nothing haunts us like the things we didn’t buy.”

Something that is very easily forgotten but almost as important as picking out an outfit, are the addition of accessories.  It doesn’t mean you always have to wear “every” type of accessory, but there are definitely times when an outfit can be lacking if you don’t include any.

The addition of a great statement necklace, bracelet, scarf or earrings can be a great way to take the style potential of an outfit up a notch.  The necklace I am wearing in this post is one I recently found and I absolutely love it.  It is a choker, but not one of those that cut off the circulation, and it is chunky making it really noticeable no matter what neckline you choose to wear it with!

It’s important to not get too carried away by including every accessory you own or wearing pieces where they are not needed. For example, if you have a blouse that has ruffles, embroidery or lace on the front, you are already making a statement so nothing else is needed there. Earrings are a little easier – I try not to overpower an outfit with chunky earrings, but I have to admit, there are definitely times when you just have to wear those things and put yourself out there. The key is not being afraid to try something, see what it looks like and take a risk!

If you are lacking in the accessory department, you need to check out this website and snag a choker like this one, or something similar…they have great prices, quality and selection. Spring and summer are a great time to start adding some fun, bright and exciting accessories to your closet…go ahead, treat yourself!

“Be strong when you are weak, be brave when you are scared, and be humble when you are victorious!”

I have seen metallic accents worn in so many different ways, so I thought I would dedicate a post on them just for that reason.

There really isn’t something that a metallic accent won’t work with – for example, a metallic purse or bag looks great no matter the color or style of what you are wearing.  Also, if you are unsure about the color of shoes or boots to wear, you can’t go wrong by wearing something metallic.

I am posting just a few of my favorites here that I have worn, but if you really want to shop for your some yourself, you can just click and explore the shopping links below.

In Utah today it is rainy, so I wanted to add a little “brightness” to my day by reminiscing about some of my favorite metallic shoes, boots, and accents.

Happy Weekend and have fun exploring some of my finds…

Leather Capris

“If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be!”

Today’s post is a full look of the outfit where I was wearing the booties I posted yesterday.  Leather and faux leather has always been a love of mine, especially since there are so many different styles and ways to wear it now.  The capri pants that I am wearing in these pictures were some that I found recently at Zara and they were so unique that I had to have them.

I have talked about how much I love to find unique styles, because I like to stand out as being different and if you know me, you know that I am definitely a unique person.  I like things a certain way and I like to be different – especially when it comes to my style.  Every one of us IS unique, the difference is that I like to show that I am unique.  We should all be proud of who we are and show people how amazing we are, and sometimes we can do that by being confident enough to show others who we are.  I believe that confidence comes from knowing who you really are, and not being afraid to let others see that.

You may ask yourself what this has to do with wearing leather pants, well…here’s my take:  I wear things that make ME feel good, express how I feel and allow me to walk and talk with absolute confidence.  I like who I am, I feel good about what I have accomplished in my life, and I am proud to be the wife, mother and friend that I am.  Because I feel all these things, it allows me to express myself in my style and not worry about whether or not someone else will approve.  It definitely feels good to receive compliments, but it is not required for me to feel great.  I have noticed that there are some people that no matter what, don’t like to pay compliments, or only do it because they feel like they should.  I have learned to notice who those people are, sometimes that type of reaction comes because they don’t feel great about how they look or they are not confident enough in themselves to pay others compliments.  What I like to do is pay them a compliment just to make them feel good – because no matter who you are, even if you are supremely confident in yourself, it always feels great to hear some positive words from another person.

Back to the outfit, I have already mentioned the pants…so, the T-shirt was from Cotton On and I loved it because it had a collar which made it stand out (find similar below).  I added a velvet jacket I have had for a while (from H&M) and of course the amazing booties from Urban Og finish off the whole look.

Spring is here!

“Life is 10% of what happens to us and 90% of how we react to it!”

We have been having the most amazing spring weather here in Utah, so I am enjoying a little healthy juice and sitting at a side walk table. I don’t know about you but when the weather is warm enough for me to sit outside without a jacket, I am going to take every opportunity possible to do that!

The booties and Green dress combo are still a favorite of mine, and these are just a few more pictures from the shoot where I highlighted these. I think if you find an outfit combo that really works for you, don’t feel bad about wearing it regularly. I like to adapt all my outfits slightly when I wear them, or if I REALLY like an outfit, I do wear it the same way, but I wait at least a few weeks to do that! I always figure that a good rule of thumb is if you can’t remember exactly when you wore it last, you are probably good to wear it again 🙂

Spring is one of my favorite seasons because I feel hope and a renewed energy. Suddenly I am in the mood to eat more salads, exercise and just generally be more active. Not that I was lazy during the colder months, but it’s almost as though I am aware that at some point I am going to be wearing a bathing suit so I had better be ready – Haha!

Look forward to some new posts with me enjoying being outside and wearing short sleeves – yay! During the winter I try and forget that I have a whole other closet that includes amazing clothes, but that if I see them I feel very sad. So now I have the opportunity to start pulling out those clothes and start wearing sandals again. I can’t wait!

Leather on Sunday?

“Everything that is made beautiful, lovely and fair is made for the eye of one who see’s it!”

I have never been much of a rule follower – especially when I don’t like the rule!  Anyone who knows me knows that I like to find ways to make rules work for me 🙂  Based on that, I want to pose a question to you…is Leather appropriate for Sunday dress?  I personally think that Leather can be extremely tasteful, classy and sophisticated…so truly the answer to that question for me is “if it’s done right!”

Today’s post shows an amazing skirt I found recently from Dirty Gal and I am absolutely in love with the cut and length. Because the length is not inappropriately short and the cut is not too tight, it allowed me to pull together a classy looking outfit.  For me, it is not a fabric that can make an outfit look trashy but rather the length, cut and how it is put together.  If in doubt on the length of a skirt (especially if you are wearing it for something other than a bar or nightclub) use the rule of thumb that when you kneel it doesn’t sit more than a couple of inches above your knee.  If you have shied away from wearing Leather because you feel it’s too edgy, perhaps you could try adding a lace blouse or one with ruffles to make the whole outfit more feminine.  As you can see I chose to wear a top that has a cowl neck, which softens the lines in the outfit and allows it to feel more feminine.  There are so many ways you can wear an outfit and incorporate Leather into it, for example you could try one of the following suggestions:

  1. A knee-high Leather skirt in a soft color like Beige or Cream and add a floral or lace blouse.
  2. Wear an A-line Leather skirt with ankle-strap pumps add a plain, simple T-shirt and a large necklace.
  3. Try some Leather pants with a tunic in a bright springy color.

Any one of the suggestions above is a great way to try something new or just adjust what you have been doing already.  For me, Leather is something that can be used in any season with slight adaptations and it certainly can be used for most occasions when it is done right.

The goal of today’s post is to let you know that you don’t have to follow rules but rather you can adapt those rules to fit any occasion.  I like Leather, so I find ways to make it work for no matter what I am doing.  If you feel that way about lace but you don’t feel it’s appropriate to wear for business, adapt how you are wearing it…anything is possible when you’re motivated to make it work!

Have a beautiful Sunday
