Don’t be Afraid to Sparkle

“You mustn’t be afraid to sparkle a little brighter darling!”

Ever since I could remember I have always loved standing out from the crowd and not blending in.  To me it has always been important to not be wearing the same thing as other people, or at the very least, not wearing it in the same way!

When I find something that really catches my eye, just like this Silver dress with the knee high Navy satin boots, I knew it was going to be a “shoot worthy” outfit.

Standing out isn’t going to mean the same thing to all of us…but if you are wondering, here are the Top 5 things I consider when looking for a really eye catching outfit:

  1. Color – this is probably the most important thing to me.  I like bold, bright, shiny – in fact, the more different or funky the better.
  2. Shoes – it always comes down to the shoes.  When I saw these Navy satin boots, I loved them because of the color but also because you don’t very often see satin boots like this – at least no knee high ones.
  3. Fabric – you can stand out even if you are wearing a T shirt if it is made from something bold or bright.  For example, a Red satin or velvet T shirt is definitely going to get you noticed.
  4. Accessories – sometimes just adding a statement necklace or scarf is enough to transform your look from ordinary to extraordinary in a heartbeat!
  5. Style – some styles look a little more of a statement.  I think that some of the most modest styles can make a statement.  For example – wearing a full length or maxi skirt that is full or one that has unusual features is going to be more funky than just choosing a knee high skirt that you normally stick to.  As you pick the style, make sure you consider your height and body shape – long skirts don’t work as well if you are really short or have a thicker waist.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should be walking around every day wearing a Silver dress and knee high boots, but there are definitely going to be some times that you are going to want to make a splash – and now you have a formula (if you choose to follow mine) or you can create your own based on your own unique style preferences!

The Power of Positive Thinking

“Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough”

We all have things that we want in this life, personal goals, professional goals and goals for our children or families.  The question is, how badly do we want to achieve these goals?  I have found that the more I want something, the more determined I am to get it, and the more effort I exert.  Of course, a huge part of achieving our goals is tied to our ability to be positive about it.

Have you ever wanted something but all you have done is focus on being upset because other people are doing better, getting frustrated because you haven’t achieved it yet, or even self-sabotaging your efforts because it’s easier to explain away why you didn’t really try to achieve something than it is to put forth the real effort.  In our own lives it can be hard to look introspectively and see where we might be going wrong, but it is absolutely necessary.  I watch my kids, and I notice when they want to quit something what emotions it brings out in me.  I have an easier time talking to them about how falling down or facing obstacles is not the same as failing, it is just a great opportunity for us to become stronger and better.  It’s not as easy when I face those challenges myself…

Over the past few years I have faced many challenges in my personal life and in my career, but the amazing thing about all those things is that it has taught me so much and made me a much more empathetic and stronger woman.  Even though I am not where I want to be (and to be honest I’m not sure I ever will be exactly where I want), but I do feel like my thoughts are focused in a much more positive direction.  I wouldn’t say I am to the point where I welcome a challenge by saying “bring it on” but I am definitely able to allow myself to be open to the fact that I can learn something, and I am excited about growth opportunities.

So, how do you remain positive when all around you is filled with challenges and chaos?

Here are some of the ways I have found work for me:

  1. I focus on what good I can see in every situation.  When challenges come my way I always look for the silver lining (what I learned, how I became better at, or even who could I help with this).
  2. Visualization has always been something I have liked to do – not to the point where I am envisioning a house that I want and I have already moved in, but rather I could see myself there, what steps do I need to take to make it happen?
  3. When work is chaotic or overwhelming, I like to think about the things I can control – I like to spend more time doing things that replenish my energy rather than drain it, like spending time with my family.
  4. Finally, I love myself.  No matter what is going on, I focus on loving myself.  When you feel positive about yourself (not just how you look but who you are), other things no longer carry any power.  All is well in your inner world, so the outer world mirrors that!

The mind is a powerful thing, why not use it to your advantage?

2018 is going to Sparkle

“She who leaves a trail of glitter is never forgotten!”

Cheesy caption, but I can tell you this…one thing that came to me while I was contemplating what happened to me in 2017 and how I was going to improve that for 2018, was how I really can affect what happens to me primarily by how I react to it.

Have you ever noticed that when things are going well, EVERYTHING seems to work so much better, there’s kind of a flow and we seem to attract more and more great things into our lives.  It seems almost logical that we would want to continue that kind of attraction…but because we are human, it is not always sustainable to be positive all the time.

Knowing that my behavior and attitude can very often determine my results, I made a choice for this year (at least most of it), that I will “sparkle” and be a positive force.  My family tells me all the time that when I am down, angry or just sad, it seems to affect the whole mood in our home.  That’s a lot of pressure, and not something I want put on me…but it’s also quite an amazing ability to know that I can help my family feel more happy, strong and positive!

In keeping with the theme of this post, the sparkly/glitter pants I am wearing are some I bought just before Christmas from H&M and they are really fun (and even better, they’re on sale).  Sparkles are not just for the holidays or special occasions, just like sequins, I think they work whenever you really want them to!  I added a white blouse with a gathered waist (similar one shown below), a long black cardigan and some sock booties. I have also recently fallen in love with some Stila liquid eyeshadow colors that I am wearing in this post.  If you haven’t tried liquid eyeshadow, you definitely should give it a try (I’m definitely sold!)

A great, simple, sparkly outfit – just in time to set you up to have a sparkly 2018 too!

A Touch of Silver

“Never be afraid to laugh at yourself, after all you could be missing out on the joke of the century!”

Ok so for those of you how know me, you know that I have a very English (dry) sense of humor, I like to be sarcastic and very “cheeky” sometimes but most of the time, I am driven and determined.  So…the picture in this post is me doing something that you may probably never see caught on camera again.  I was doing my “I have had enough of taking pictures” or “I am a blogger and this is what we do” pose.  Either way, it’s not something I do very often and to get it caught on camera…is pretty crazy!  The reason I posted this picture is because I wanted to show that even though I really don’t like to be seen doing this kind of thing…I am OK to not be perfect and kind of make fun of myself.  If I can’t laugh at yourself I’m in big trouble, right?!

The Mules and cute little Silver Michael Kors bag are a great accent to this great embroidered dress – the dress didn’t need much, so I thought a touch of Silver would finish off the outfit perfectly.  If I were to find another pair of shoes or bag, I could have also chosen Red or even Green.

I have to admit it’s kind of hard for me to cram everything I need into such a small bag, so I usually only use this size of bag when I am going on a date with my wonderful husband, a girls night out or some other special event.  It’s hard sometimes to be hassling transferring all my junk from one bag to another, so I have to admit I’m definitely guilty of finding a bag I really like and just sticking with it until I get bored.

I do think it’s a great idea to have a few small bags like this one, or a clutch or even one of the boho style wallets that you can fit a lipstick into or your phone for when you go out.  I definitely love dressing up a  little and finishing off an outfit with a great bag makes me somehow feel like I didn’t miss a piece.

You can click here to get this Michael Kors bag and here to get these great BCBG mules….hurry before the warm weather is gone!

The Full Dress

“Courage is not having the strength to go on, it is going on when you don’t have the strength!”

I posted a glimpse of this dress this week, but I wanted to show the full effect.  I had a few people say they loved the blouse, but as you can see, it is a shift style dress, and very feminine.

It is one of the dresses that I took on the cruise – I always like to dress up a little while I am on vacation, especially if we are going out to dinner, and this dress definitely made me feel like I was dressed up!  I used some simple Silver accents with the small purse and the mule shoes…

A shift dress is one that is perfect for most figures, especially those that have problem areas around the hips or stomach because it is not fitted at all and it hides those areas.  I do like to wear fitted clothes quite often, but there are definitely times when I love wearing this style of dress because I don’t have to worry about how much I eat – and I will have to be honest, on the cruise at dinner I pretty much ate whatever I wanted (which sometimes included trying multiple courses and extra desserts LOL).

The embroidery detail really adds another dimension to an otherwise ordinary and simple style.  If you don’t have any embroidered pieces in your closet, now’s the time to change that.  You can shop the post by clicking the links below…

Mules…

“Achieving greatness is impossible without recognizing greatness in another!”

One of the latest trends that I really like, is the trend for Mules. I remember wearing these styles of shoes when I was younger, and I especially loved them back then (you know, before I had trained myself to wear high heels all the time) because they are not too high, they don’t rub your feet and they just look good!

The pair I am wearing is another purchase from my NY shopping trip.  While I was there I visited a store that I loved and if you’ve never been to Century 21 Stores, then you really need to check it out!  I have found so many great designer items, and my absolute favorite part is their shoe department.  The Women’s department takes up two floors and it is completely separate from the Men’s shoes.  They sell the major designers from Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik to Steve Madden and J Slides.  I have never left there with less than 2 pairs of shoes that I love, and this pair of Mules is one of my purchases from this trip.  The leather feels so soft that it molds to your feet completely meaning that nothing rubs and they just feel like they are part of your feet.

Many stores carry this style of shoes, but if you want to explore where I got mine, go to www.c21stores.com.  You can also check out Aldo, Steve Madden and Nine West directly if you don’t find any you like at Century 21.

The White jeans I am wearing are also from NY, but I found those at a boutique.  I loved the detail on the legs, and this week I will reveal the full look, so stay tuned!

Metallics

“Be strong when you are weak, be brave when you are scared, and be humble when you are victorious!”

I have seen metallic accents worn in so many different ways, so I thought I would dedicate a post on them just for that reason.

There really isn’t something that a metallic accent won’t work with – for example, a metallic purse or bag looks great no matter the color or style of what you are wearing.  Also, if you are unsure about the color of shoes or boots to wear, you can’t go wrong by wearing something metallic.

I am posting just a few of my favorites here that I have worn, but if you really want to shop for your some yourself, you can just click and explore the shopping links below.

In Utah today it is rainy, so I wanted to add a little “brightness” to my day by reminiscing about some of my favorite metallic shoes, boots, and accents.

Happy Weekend and have fun exploring some of my finds…

Metallic Shoes

“It is within herself she will find the strength she needs!”

Have you ever had one of those days where you can’t find the right pair of shoes to go with something you want to wear? You want a plain pair of shoes to go with a patterned outfit, but you don’t want to wear just Black…Metallic shoes are a perfect solution.

I found these Silver shoes last summer, and loved them because of all the buckles and how unique they are. I also have a Gold pair of shoes, and these are the shoes I go to when I know I want to stand out! There are so many different Metallic shoes, sandals and boots out there, and if you add them to ANY outfit, it will totally transform your look.

Certain brands are known for bringing out funky shoes, and I have found that one of my favorites is Topshop. They are an English brand, so I wore their clothes and shoes while I lived over there, and when they started bringing them into Nordstrom, it was even better for me. You can buy online, and there are stores in some cities (such as Vegas), but Nordstrom also carries some of their styles, which is always dangerous, especially when I am eating in the Café at the store in Fashion Place Mall, because the Topshop display is right before the restaurant, so I just HAVE to look J

If you want to see some of these styles, check out the links below…

Add some Metallics to your life to spice it up just a little!

Experiences are life…

“If we could sell our experiences for what they cost us, we’d be millionaires!”

Headed out to a wedding tonight for one of my oldest son’s best friends.  Where have the years gone that I am old enough that I could have a son that is married?  No way, I still feel like I am a teenager (which is really scary considering I have 4 sons)…

Time certainly goes by quickly so making the most of the time we have, is really important.  For some reason, and I have heard this over the years and I have noticed it now too, the older we get the faster time goes by.  With all of these acknowledgements, it is making me more and more determined to spend my time in pursuit of those things that make myself and my family happy.

The outfit is one that I have worn before, but for a wedding or party metallics are perfect and why not wear it again.  I am certainly not to the point where I have a closet so full that I only ever wear something once or twice.  Ok, I do have a larger than normal closet, but I am definitely not there yet.  What I do is find different combinations of outfits with those things I already have so that it could appear that I have more outfits than I actually do 🙂  Not a bad trick and something everyone can try – mix and match your “outfits” to create new ones – it’s almost like going shopping without spending the money.

Hope the rest of your weekend is amazing – I know mine will be!

Not all that Glitters…

“You can find a way, or you can make one.”

For Today’s Sunday Best I was feeling rather festive so I pulled out an amazing skirt that I love…it flows beautifully and makes me feel really feminine and classy. I paired it with a sequined black sweater, fishnets and booties.

The necklace is really simple a black pear shaped Black drop pendant on a simple Silver chain – a perfect compliment to this classy looking outfit.  Because the outfit was just Black and Silver, I added a pop of color in the Lipstick – bright pink (see below for details)…

We are now officially one week until Christmas Day, so I wanted to take a moment to contemplate what I am grateful for:

  1. My Family – sometimes the craziness, fighting and hectic schedules don’t allow me to really fully appreciate my family, but I can definitely tell you that I would not be who I am without them!
  2. My Friends – growing up not having any sisters, I consider the girlfriends that I have the Sisters that I chose…I love each and every one of them!
  3. My Home – being able to have a place of sanctuary is so important to me, even if my favorite place where I feel most grounded in when I am taking some ME time in the bathtub!
  4. Myself – 2017 is going to be the year that I really make sure that before I deplete whatever I have available to give, I am going to keep my cup full by taking care and appreciating myself, the gifts, confidence and abilities that I have.
  5. My Career – being in Sales has only helped grow my confidence, and I have developed amazing friendships along the way!

I hope that the hectic nature and gift giving of the Holiday Season doesn’t wipe you out, so that you still have the opportunity to appreciate the things you ALREADY have!

Merry Christmas Week…
