How Colors can Influence our Behavior

“Women sometimes go too far, it’s true, but it’s only when you go too far that others listen!”

We all have colors that somehow attract us to them and affect our mood…but can colors really influence our behavior?

Scientific America says that “Red is a powerful color. It’s the color of Cupid and the Devil, the color of love and hate. It brings to mind hot-blooded anger and Scarlet Lettershame. It means luck in China, where bridal wear is red, mourning in parts of Africa and sex in Amsterdam’s red-light district.”

There are also some biological reactions that showcase the color in varying shades, such as:  Getting red int he face when you are angry or embarrassed.  The color Red has also been known to cause Red car drivers to react more aggressively than drivers in another colored vehicle.

I think the most renowned example of Red used in an instinctual way is the Red cape of a matador, used to taunt a bull.  The bottom line is that Red is known as the most “powerful” of all the colors, so shouldn’t it be so that it can also evoke the most intense emotions?  Red has always been my favorite color, even at a young age I was drawn to it’s power and the frequency that it emitted.  It is the color I always turn to when I want to feel more confident, more powerful and last but not least, more sexy.

I know you have all felt things when you have worn certain colors…but my question is, have you ever used those “feelings” to your advantage?  Red can be intimidating to some people, so it is probably not a color you want to wear for an interview or as a Woman if you want to man to look at you and take you seriously as an intelligent peer.  Unfortunately we as Women still face having to manage the perceptions of Men and actually even other Women.  If you are someone that loves Red as much as I do and you want to wear it with pride, then you also have to be prepared for the reactions you are going to get.  The feelings of confidence and power that you emit when you are wearing Red is something that other people are going to feel too!

If you are looking for a cheat sheet about which colors you should and shouldn’t wear for certain times, here are few guidelines for you (remember, these are just general and definitely shouldn’t be taken too seriously, because we would never wear anything if we did!):

Styling your Booties

“Be the energy you want to attract!”

One of my favorite things about Fall and cooler weather is the fact that I have the opportunity to wear boots and booties because I don’t want to expose my toes to the cooler temperatures.  There are many, many styles – some that are more appropriate for a casual outfit, but I am in love with finding styles of boots that I am able to wear with dresses or skirts, and even more specifically, ones that can be really dressed them up so I can wear them for business.

One of the easiest outfits to put together is one that is just a simple shift dress with a pair of booties or boots.  You can really funk up the look by choosing a pair of statement boots, or adding a really colorful or contrasting pair of tights. The look in today’s post features a dress I bought while I was in England at an outlet Mall called Cheshire Oaks and it is made by Warehouse.  The booties are also a purchase from England that were truly a bargain (and who doesn’t love to find a bargain)?

This dress with the pleated ruffles is definitely unique, and the long sleeves were perfect for the cloudy, cooler day when I had this shoot.  I am someone that is cold a lot of the time, so I have to make sure that when I am choosing an outfit I have thought of every eventuality.  I have to make sure that it is going to keep me warm most of the day, or I bring along a sweater or jacket as added insurance.

I have picked out some similar styles to those I am wearing in this post below, and some of them are top of my “must have” list for Fall 2017.

What is your favorite thing about Fall?  I drove through the Canyon up to Park City this weekend and the amazing color explosion that I saw was truly amazing.  Fall is such a great time to really appreciate this amazing world we live in and enjoy what art nature shows us…

As I am looking at the weather for this upcoming week and seeing that it is on the cold side, I am contemplating more ways I can wear some of my new favorite clothes and boots…stay tuned for more Fall looks as the week goes on!

An Edited Work Wardrobe: The Perfect Capsule Collection

“Elegance never goes out of style!”

It can be a challenge to know what to put on every weekday when you’re heading to the office for work. Keeping up with trends, while still feeling like yourself is no easy feat; which is why so many women are creating their own capsule collection and editing their work wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe will provide you with several garments, items, and accessories that can be worn together and easily incorporated with other key pieces in your closet. Therefore, finding a smart, chic, and stylish outfit for work becomes less of a chore in the morning, and you can concentrate on grabbing a coffee before your first meeting. The following are some ideas and tips for those who want a carefully curated wardrobe space when they’re getting ready for work.

Color & Patterns

A great place to start is with a neutral palette for your work wardrobe; monochrome, nudes and light shades will lend themselves to a wider variety of clothes and go together successfully. Go into store sales and see what shades suit your skin tone, so you can have a better understanding of what will not only look good paired with a black skirt or navy trousers but what will make you look as fresh as possible during your working week. If you have some staple items like skirts, trousers, a jacket, and a dress in plain, easy-to-match tones; you’ll be able to incorporate some brighter hues and lively patterned fabrics with an array of shirts, blouses, and tops.

Details & Accessories

You still want to reflect your character and style through your workwear, however formal the office dress code might be. Therefore, you could consider investing in some classic accessories that will last you throughout each season. Have a look online a see what’s available; you could buy pearl earrings for a feminine and decorative touch, or invest in a necklace that will add some subtle charm to your neckline and liven-up a plain dress. A large bag, that’s comfortable to carry is another vital addition to your work wardrobe; you’ll want something to hold your phone, files, tablet, and all your other work-related items, and something that will suit your style and blend with the rest of your wardrobe.

Shape & Silhouette

Clean lines and simple silhouettes rarely date, and they will flatter a variety of shapes and sizes. Remember that you want to feel confident and comfortable throughout each day; so save the fashion experiments for the weekend and ensure that your capsule work-wardrobe is only full of items you can grab and wear with ease. Classic shapes will also ensure that you look smart and put-together for every occasion at work and you’ll find it easier to add color and texture with your fabric choices. You’ll have enough stress to deal with during your working day, so take the pressure out of getting ready, and curate your ideal edited wardrobe; you’ll ensure that your mornings run smoothly and you look and feel great on your way to work.

Happy Wednesday, I hope your week is going well…

The Best Days

“Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not being afraid to be wrong!”

It may be cliche, but I have found when I love what I’m wearing…I tend to feel happier, more confident, and most importantly (especially when you work in sales and you’re a mum), I don’t let the little things get to me!

As I look back at the pictures from the shoot that I did with EmParker Photography, I can absolutely tell the outfits that I feel the best in…

Sometimes it’s hard to recognize something this small as contributing to how successful we are, how happy we are or even how comfortable we feel in our relationships.  I definitely know for me that in all of those areas, how I feel about me (which can be directly correlated to how I feel about how I look) can help me be more confident in business, relationships, and even with my kids…

I don’t want you to misunderstand me that I can’t feel great if I am having a bad hair day or if I am dressed only in sweats, because I do believe that you can still feel good about yourself then…but what I am saying is, if you want success in any area of your life…then dress for it and act like you deserve it!

Confidence is a characteristic that people are inexplicably drawn to, and it becomes contagious.

If you have kids, when they were younger did you worry about who their friends were?  Did you want them hanging out with the ones that were a “good influence” or came from a good family?  I think that is something we need to make sure we do for ourselves too…If you want to feel better about yourself, start hanging out with people that have that kind of confidence.  If you want success, hang out with people that have a great work ethic and are not afraid to put in the time an effort to get it.  I have seen it so much in my life that if you hang out with someone often enough, you start to become like them in some way (either good or bad).

Today’s post is dedicated to feeling good about yourself, dressing the part and using that to help you create success and happiness in your life!

Photo Shoot Sneak Peak

“Only I can change my life, no one can do it for me!”

I was fortunate to be be asked by a friend of mine who is a photographer to be part of her portfolio, so we had fun creating some fun pictures, and the best part, it included a makeover.  I got to sit while someone else did my hair and makeup.  It is not something I have had the pleasure of doing very many times, and I have to say…I loved being pampered.

One of the highlights was that I they used an amazing lipstick in the makeover that I had to go and purchase – I’m wearing it in the pictures, and it’s called “Please Me” by MAC – click here to snag your own 🙂

I enjoyed being in a studio, creating some fun poses, being told what to do (especially because I knew it was to help create some great pictures because I am not known for loving being told what to do!!) 😉

I love picking out outfits for my shoots…sometimes I use things I already own, sometimes I buy new things, and I always create my own look based on what I think will look great together.  The outfit in this shoot is a skirt I already owned (find a similar one here) and a great top I found at Zara when I was in Playa Del Carmen on my cruise.  The shoes I already owned as well (click here for similar), so it was a really easy, business appropriate outfit once it was finished.  I love the setting next to the wood wall – the brown really accentuates the Linen top.

On side note, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is here, so if you want to buy from the Early Access just click on the banner at the top of the page.  Over the next few days I will be highlighting some of my picks from this year’s preview…

Happy Friday!!

Make a Lasting Impression

“Be the kind of person that you want to meet!”

No matter who you are, when you meet people, you make an impression on them.

Here’s the good and the bad news…you get to choose what that impression is!  People are going to remember us for something so we may as well make what they remember us for, something positive!  Your appearance is the first thing that people notice, and your appearance can be broken down into many facets.  I don’t think you should dress for someone else, but what I do think you should do is consider your audience or who you are going to be meeting with when you plan an outfit for the day.  I would much rather someone look at me and remember a pair of shoes I was wearing or a dress, that way, I know I am kind of top of their mind.

If any of you are in sales, you will understand that TOMA or Top Of Mind Awareness is something that creates action.  I like it when I have met with someone once, and I follow up with them and they mention something about me that reminded me who I was.  Such as, my English accent, my style, my knowledge on something they are interested in or just a pair of shoes (yes, shoes are just as important if not more important than anything else).

So, the question is, what kind of impression do you want to make?  I know there is so much more to us than what we look like, but nobody is ever going to see anything if all they can think about is what you have trained them to see.  If you are looking to be successful in any aspect of your life – if you’re in business how do you learn success?  I would guess that you learn habits from them, and emulate their behaviors.  How do we learn to cook?  We follow recipes or learn from our parents.  The same can be said about making the right impression – watch and learn from other people that you respect and admire…that’s how you will create the standard for yourself that works!

I know from experience that being memorable helps in many aspects of life…it’s the path I choose the walk!  It shows my boys that I have tenacity, confidence, a great work ethic, class and most importantly that I respect myself!  What path do you want to walk?

Business Confidence!!

“Being a Female is a matter of birth, being a Woman is a matter of age and being a Lady is a matter of choice!”

Whether you are a Business person or not, whenever you walk into a room, I have always found that it is a good idea to make people remember you!  This post and outfit is dedicated to that belief.

The outfit is classicly stylish but also has a hint of femininity and style.  I have worn this dress with different colored and styled blouses underneath but I definitely love how the sleeves flow with this blouse.  I also added a pair of great Leopard print pumps to tie in the colors and make the outfit a little more spicy.  The accessories were simple and remiscent of Jackie O or other classic ladies like Audrey Hepburn – just simply pearls!

I don’t think there needs to be much said about the outfit because it speaks for itself…

For all you Mothers out there, I hope you are treated with the love you deserve this weekend!

What is Sunday Best?

“In order for your life to be great, you must first learn to appreciate it!”

Whether you are a church-goer or not, I am sure you are all aware of what Sunday Best means.  To me, it is something that is somewhere in between the very often conservative styles that can be considered business wear, and the more formal outfit choices that are worn for events or special occasions.

I have always been someone that likes to dress up, I think it’s because I grew up in England and during my younger years when I would be dressing to go out at night to a club or wherever, the dress code was always a lot more dressy than I have seen over here in the US.  Jeans weren’t allowed and for Men they required that they wear a nice shirt, and Women wore either nice pants, skirt or a dress.  I enjoyed making myself look nice and classy, so that is something that I have carried with me.

Even if you aren’t someone that goes to church, there is never a bad time to wear Sunday Best – it doesn’t just have to be on a Sunday.  The outfit in this post is a throwback to one I have posted before because I wanted to demonstrate that this outfit was something I wore for work but it is also something that is appropriate and classy enough to be worn as Sunday best, or as an outfit to wear to go out.  I love the monochrome look, it has always been something that has drawn my attention – it is also a really easy look to recreate and the colors suit anyone!

You can shop similar items to the post by clicking the links below and to get your hands on one of these amazing clutches, click here.

After an amazing day with my family, I feel blessed to enjoy Sunday’s with them, especially when we get to see the Utah Jazz beat the LA Clippers in Game 7 of the NBA Playoffs…It makes the day even better!!

Sunday’s for our family are a day to be lazy, hang out, swim, BBQ, spend some time preparing for what the upcoming week has in store for us, and feel blessed to have each other.  I truly do feel thankful for my many blessings, only one of which is my family.  Not that they don’t bring challenges, but one thing I do realize is that the only way to truly appreciate somehting is to know how hard things can be.  How could I appreciate how great things are if I have never experienced any adversity – although challenges are hard, they are what help us KNOW what is important.

Next time you are thinking of putting together your own version of Sunday best, remember that we all have different interpretations of what we like, and that is a good thing.  Who wants to look the same as anyone else anyway?  I know that I definitely don’t.  Be unique, be amazing, be confident, be determined, be YOU!

Have a great week…

These Boots are made for Walking…

“These boots will take me where they will!”

I have to admit I absolutely love myself a pair of boots that are a little edgy chic!  The booties in today’s post are one of my current favorites, I love the studded straps, the pointy toes as well as the heel height.  They are perfect to wear with a shift dress, a pair of joggers (like I wore), some jeans or even a pair of business pants.  Sometimes it’s kind of fun to cross styles (like using these edgy boots with business attire).

It is always a great idea to own a pair of boots that you know you can pull out often because they are versatile and more than anything because you absolutely love them!  Styles have changed so much over the years, so that now you don’t just need colder weather to wear boots, in fact it is fun to experiment with them in the spring and summer 🙂

Mine are Top Shop, but there are so many other brands out there that feature similar styles…I have posted some below for you to explore for yourselves!

Finally the weekend is here!  Have a great weekend…

Adding a Layer

“The greatest pleasure in life is doing something that others think you cannot!”

One of the greatest and hardest parts of spring is the vast differences in the weather.  As I sat in my office today looking out the window I saw Blue skies change to storm clouds and rain…and the temperature probably dropped at least 10 degrees!  With that being said, it is always handy to have a great layer you can pull out that is stylish, comfortable, warm and very often something to consider, especially in some climates is one that is waterproof!

The outfit I am wearing today is one I wore for business, so I wanted to make sure that the layer I chose was appropriate and didn’t take away from what I was wearing.  I love the knit of this cardigan because it is unique and the length is perfect to keep you cosy!

Underneath the layers I chose to wear a plain pair of Black cigarette pants along with a button up ruffle blouse and the shoes, oh yes, the shoes…amazing snake print with a hint of yellow 🙂

Today was a little chilly with the rain and wind blowing, so the shoot was a little challenging at times, however, I think my amazing photographer (Erin Wyness Photography) pulled it off!

Living in Utah I know a lot of people that wear outdoor type layers (like NorthFace and other such brands) over their business or dressy clothes…I also love these styles and brands, however, I feel that if you want to convey an appearance of professionalism or confidence, it is better to incorporate different styles and brands (such as the unique cardigan in this post). I also like to wear coats and jackets, but when you do choose your layers, try to make sure that they are an “addition” to your outfit, rather than just an afterthought. It is a small adjustment but it can make all the difference.

Check out some great layering options by clicking the links below…
