The Right Sunglasses

Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma!

Are you anything like me where you LOVE to have a wide variety of sunnies, for different outfits, occasions or moods?

Are you a little more conservative and stick to the same style all the time?

Or, are you not sure what style of sunglasses works for you so you just buy a pair and hope for the best?

No matter which of these categories you fall into, there’s something to be learned about sunnies, where to shop them, how to wear them or which ones will work for the shape of your face…so READ ON!

First, let me start by saying that I don’t believe that there is only one style of sunglasses that will work for any one person, in fact, with all the different styles, shapes and colors, we all have the ability to create a wide variety of looks…

I have a strong, square jaw…and an oval face which means I can wear larger frames. I love sunglasses that cover a lot of my face, I like to really stand out…but what works for you? The first thing I would say is don’t wear something that doesn’t make you feel great. But, if you want to explore sunglasses shapes and styles, here are a few ideas:

  1. I have found that Sunglasses Hut actually allows you to shop by the shape of your fact (just click here) – this is a great way to find out what you’re looking for before you go out and try on EVERY SINGLE PAIR 😉 – just click here
  2. I always check out Nordstrom Rack for Designer sale sunglasses (they seem to have new ones all the time and a big selection most times of the year) – that way I can get an amazing pair without having to pay full price (unless of course you want to pay full price).
  3. Even though I love larger shapes, there are definitely some that are TOO LARGE for me. A good rule of thumb is that if they are wider than your face, then they’re definitely too big.
  4. Create a contrast with the sunglasses for your face shape. If you have a round face, steer away from round sunglasses, and so on.
  5. Aviators work with most shapes of faces…and bonus – I have never known a time when you can’t buy a pair of Aviators because they are always “in”.
  6. Not sure what shape of face you have? That’s OK…take a friend with you to give feedback as you try on various pairs.

There are a few styles and shapes that I love to have, but that doesn’t mean I am not willing to try new ones when I see them in stores. I buy a wide range of expensive designer ones (which I like to find at a bargain) and then some cheaper pairs that usually end up getting hammered because I just throw them around…it’s perfect for those that you know you will get bored of, or they will go out of style.

For this summer, here are some styles I am wearing…you can click the link below each picture to shop:

Have fun with Accessories

Accessories are like the perfect spice. They compliment what is already there…

Yes – I do believe that shoes are the most important part of an outfit.
No – that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing you can think about!

I love spending time finding great accessories that can help make an outfit pop – in fact, aside from changing a pair of shoes, accessories are the easiest and most noticeable ways to affect how you look. By adding a great pair of earrings you can achieve an immediate style pop. A bag can be the thing that draws the eye and even easier, now that spring is here and summer around the corner, add a fabulous pair of sunnies.

You can shop a similar bag to the cute backpack I’m wearing by clicking here

I always have so much fun shopping for accessories (OK, I admit it, I pretty much have fun shopping for ANYTHING)…but for accessories, it’s an easy one, you can just buy whatever and then find things to go with it. Earrings are a personal favorite of mine – I definitely love statement earrings, especially when I am wearing my hair up.

If you are looking for a way to “up” your style game, accessories are the perfect way to do it. Buy a fabulous pair of earrings or necklace (find some of my top picks at the end of this post that you can shop, a pair of fun sunnies (shop mine right here), or even a set of bead bracelets or bangles for your summer styling (see the end of the post to shop more of my picks).

Keep it Simple

The greatest prison people live in is the fear of what other people think!

I think one of the biggest challenges we face when trying to figure out what our style is or how to dress is the fact that there are so many options and styles available.  There is a huge problem in society where we tend to overthink things, or even talk ourselves out of things because we are worried what others might think, or we are just not confident enough to trust our instincts.

Confidence in today’s world is word that is thrown around all the time, but what does it really mean?  Around the age of 9 we start focusing more on what other people think and tend to shape ourselves more after the reactions we get from people rather than by what actually makes us feel good.  The good news, just as we chose to mold our thought process after what others think, we can change that same thought process and make it more into what we want it to be.

The only way to do that is just to jump in and start dressing for YOU without any thought (or at least not giving in to the fear that you might not be accepted) and just go for it.  Starting small, keeping it simple is the best way to start.  Because there are so many style options out there, the best way to create your own unique style and do it for YOU is to start by finding colors that you love.  Once you have your favorite color (one that looks good against your skin tone), then you start looking for styles that flatter your body type (of course, only ones that you like and not what you think others will like).

The pictures in today’s post are a couple of years old because I wanted to demonstrate that simple can also be timeless.  A simple pair of faux leather leggings, a peplum top (flattering when you are looking to accentuate a smaller waist or give the appearance of a small waist) and a leather jacket.  Simple – classy and comfortable.  When you dress using simple pieces like these, a great way to add a little funk is by adding some fun accessories and shoes.  A pair of fun drop earrings, a chunky pearl bracelet and some bold pumps.

The key is to not let the fear, over thinking or lack of confidence dictate what you wear or how you feel.  I know that may sound easier said than done, but honestly the only way to grow your confidence is to expand your comfort zone and try new things.  Loving to dress for YOU is the start of having an amazing relationship with yourself.  If we don’t love and treat ourselves the way we deserve to be treated, other’s won’t know that’s how they should be treating us.

Confidence is like love, the more you have the more you get…the hardest part is just latching on to that little bit that is already inside you.  I believe that everyone in this world has at least one thing they can own and be proud of.  That one thing that makes you know how amazing you are.  It could be something like being a good cook, having creativity and using that to make your house into a home, being exceptionally patient with your kids to name just a few.  There is always something, and that feeling you get when you feel satisfaction after accomplishment or showing love, that is the feeling you will want to latch onto.  Use that to help you gain confidence in any other area of your life…trust me, I have used this so many times in my life and it works.

I hope you have a blessed weekend, and if you feel like sharing something that you did to help you gain more confidence, I would love to hear!

Small Things Make a Difference

“The beauty of life is in the small details not in big events!”

We all have our own unique way of handling things in life, we do things differently, we place varying degrees of importance on some things over others, and as a result, we are all unique individuals.

Paying attention to the small things can be hard when we have goals, ambitions and life’s distractions – who knows what I’m talking about (especially if you have kids!~) . So how do we stay focused and remember the small things?

The small details in our lives may not seem significant until we start adding them up – then the accumulation is actually HUGE!

This method can be equally true when putting together an outfit – all the combined detail of an outfit are what make the outfit great.

I always try and make sure that I have at least one conversation starter, or one thing that may seem like a small detail but it is significant to me.   I typically choose shoes, but there are lots of other ways to do it as well…

In this outfit I am wearing there are a couple of things – the ribbon detail on the pants definitely got me some attention, the boots (especially for those of you that love Dr Marten’s either more recently or from the good old days) and the nail polish.  A detail like your nails is something that can definitely be a small detail that can make you feel sassy and fabulous.

Whether you’re someone that likes to be noticed or not, ask yourself this question “Do I like to feel good about myself” – if you answer yes, and I am guessing that most people will answer “yes”.  The next step is to figure out what it is that makes you feel good.  Are you a girl that absolutely loves makeup?  Do you enjoy the process of making yourself up and putting on some fabulous lipstick?  Do you find your hair to be your favorite feature?  Does it make you feel good to know that you are working out regularly?  Do you like to get your finger or toenails done regularly?  Do you like wearing a pair of shoes that is unique? Are you a bargain shopper that loves the thrill of finding a deal so that you can wear something knowing that it didn’t cost you a fortune?

Whatever it is that makes you feel good, that is something you should make sure you nurture.  Paying attention to all details in your life and appreciating those details is something that will make you feel great.

I have found that while it’s important for me to think “big picture” I definitely realize the steps that it takes me to get to my goals, and I appreciate and every single one of those steps.  And while I’m at it – I think it’s important (at least for me) to feel good as I am on the road to my goals…

Pay Attention to the Details

“The difference between mediocrity and excellence is the attention to detail!”

After just returning from a vacation staying in a cabin in Montana, river rafting, hiking and horseback riding in Glacier National Park, mountain biking and fishing at the lake, I was seriously craving dressing up and getting ready this morning.  I don’t know why but I always seem to focus so much better when I am dressed and ready to go.  I kind of have a hard time focusing on doing anything work related when I am vacationing (I guess that’s a good thing), unless something needs to be done.

I try to set aside some time to post, write, and even take pictures, but honestly, I get so busy making the memories that I forget to capture them on camera.  Anyone else have this happen to them?  Sometimes Brandon will say “let me take a picture of you, or the whole family” and that’s the first time that it occurred to me that I might actually want to be IN some of the pictures I take 😉

As I think about dressing up and dressing the part, the biggest challenge that I see people have is the lack of attention to the details.  It’s easily done, and it’s also easily forgotten.  I may be a little crazy because I notice everything about what someone else wears, I notice ALL the details, so when I am building my outfits, the jewelry, the bag, the shoes, and even the jacket or coat carry equal weight to the outfit I am wearing.  Sometimes wearing a plain dress is perfect, but it can lack a little “oomph” if you don’t add some great accessories or shoes.  One of the easiest outfits to take when you travel is a plain, versatile, wrinkle-resistant, dress or jumpsuit, then add a funky pair of shoes, a scarf, a belt, some chunky jewelry or a bright bag.

In today’s post I wanted to show the baby blue bag that I posted about a few weeks ago, because the color, the strap and the style make it completely unique and noticeable.  I didn’t try to match the shoes but picked a neutral White pump, and wore this with some versatile, comfortable and cool chambray pants.

I may or may not be a little bit of a shopper (I will deny it if you ask me), but I do know that I am always looking for some great statement pieces that I can use with multiple outfits.  I have quite a few pairs of shoes (I know, hard to believe), I have quite a few handbags (again, hard to believe) and as for my jewelry I sometimes can’t even find or remember some of the things I have.  I don’t recommend getting yourself into this situation, however, I do think it’s fun to have plenty of things to choose from when putting together an outfit.

I have always been someone that doesn’t aspire to be mediocre, but wants to strive for excellence, and that goes for my style as well as everything else in my life – so I always pay attention to the details, in every area of my life!

Winter Shopping Made Simple

“Real style is never right or wrong, it’s a matter of being yourself on purpose.”

Our experience of winter is very much related to how prepared we are for it.  When I first started skiing I would only be able to do one run, then I would have to go into the lodge to warm up for a while before I could do another.  The reason being that no matter what I tried, my toes were always like ice cubes almost immediately.  It wasn’t until I discovered the heated hand and feet warmers that skiing actually became fun for me.  I could bundle up everywhere else, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t keep my extremities warm.

Winter is very much like that for me – I can tolerate just about anything so long as I’m not too cold.  I have some really cute ski jackets, but there are times when I want to wear something a little more stylish, but it’s still important for me to be warm and cozy.  I wear beanies, hats, scarves, gloves – the whole nine yards, so finding some unique, pieces are important to me.

I have ordered from some online sites before and when the merchandise arrives, I have been disappointed more than I have been happy.  I know my size and very rarely try things on when I’m shopping, so when I order online I expect their sizing to be accurate.  I have found everything that I have ordered from this site (Shein) has fit me just how I want it to, and the quality is really good.

Don’t believe me?  Give it a try – I picked out some jackets, leopard print and some accessories for you to look at, and you can also click the discount link below and shop some of their great extended Black Friday sales…don’t wait!  The deal is ending soon!

An Edited Work Wardrobe: The Perfect Capsule Collection

“Elegance never goes out of style!”

It can be a challenge to know what to put on every weekday when you’re heading to the office for work. Keeping up with trends, while still feeling like yourself is no easy feat; which is why so many women are creating their own capsule collection and editing their work wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe will provide you with several garments, items, and accessories that can be worn together and easily incorporated with other key pieces in your closet. Therefore, finding a smart, chic, and stylish outfit for work becomes less of a chore in the morning, and you can concentrate on grabbing a coffee before your first meeting. The following are some ideas and tips for those who want a carefully curated wardrobe space when they’re getting ready for work.

Color & Patterns

A great place to start is with a neutral palette for your work wardrobe; monochrome, nudes and light shades will lend themselves to a wider variety of clothes and go together successfully. Go into store sales and see what shades suit your skin tone, so you can have a better understanding of what will not only look good paired with a black skirt or navy trousers but what will make you look as fresh as possible during your working week. If you have some staple items like skirts, trousers, a jacket, and a dress in plain, easy-to-match tones; you’ll be able to incorporate some brighter hues and lively patterned fabrics with an array of shirts, blouses, and tops.

Details & Accessories

You still want to reflect your character and style through your workwear, however formal the office dress code might be. Therefore, you could consider investing in some classic accessories that will last you throughout each season. Have a look online a see what’s available; you could buy pearl earrings for a feminine and decorative touch, or invest in a necklace that will add some subtle charm to your neckline and liven-up a plain dress. A large bag, that’s comfortable to carry is another vital addition to your work wardrobe; you’ll want something to hold your phone, files, tablet, and all your other work-related items, and something that will suit your style and blend with the rest of your wardrobe.

Shape & Silhouette

Clean lines and simple silhouettes rarely date, and they will flatter a variety of shapes and sizes. Remember that you want to feel confident and comfortable throughout each day; so save the fashion experiments for the weekend and ensure that your capsule work-wardrobe is only full of items you can grab and wear with ease. Classic shapes will also ensure that you look smart and put-together for every occasion at work and you’ll find it easier to add color and texture with your fabric choices. You’ll have enough stress to deal with during your working day, so take the pressure out of getting ready, and curate your ideal edited wardrobe; you’ll ensure that your mornings run smoothly and you look and feel great on your way to work.

Happy Wednesday, I hope your week is going well…

Ultimate Confidence

“Make sure you don’t start seeing yourself through the eyes of those who don’t value you.  Know your worth even if they don’t.”

I have recently been soul searching to find out why I started my blog.  Then I remembered, I have had some experiences in work and in my life that have led me to know that I need to learn and grow from them.  I started this blog to help empower others to use what they already have inside them to create a rich and fulfilled life.

I was raised with the belief that I could be or do whatever I wanted to. I am extremely lucky that my parents encouraged and validated me enough to believe in myself.

Confidence is something that is visible – how you stand, your facial expressions and body language

That doesn’t mean that I haven’t met bumps along the way, made life harder for myself, or have just basically fallen flat on my face! But what it does mean is that no matter how many times I feel crappy, have self-doubt, insecurity, or failures, I KNOW I can pick myself up and figure something out. Whether that means trying the same thing over again or trying to do something a different way, I don’t quit.

As the years have progressed, I have found that the more success I have, the more confidence comes from it. I feel very secure in my abilities and know that the only thing holding me back is ME.

After Graduating from College, still living in England, I had an interview with a Pharmaceutical company that I thought went really well. I made it to the third round of interviews – feeling really confident in myself and my abilities I met with the female recruiter only to have a conversation I was not expecting. She explained to me that I would be meeting with Doctors who expect to see a Woman who (words to the effect of) “wears a short skirt”. Being a Young Woman I was absolutely appalled that someone could expect something like this. I was definitely naïve but I have realized as my career has gone on, that unfortunately, you meet people like this all the time.

No matter how hard you try, not everyone is going to like you all the time…so love yourself – that you can control!

I made it my goal to find a way to express myself with style that did not dictate how short or tight my clothing was. Being remembered should not be for these reasons. I believed that my intelligence would be what people remembered, but after years of experience, I have found that unfortunately that is not the case. Why am I telling you this? Because… if you want to be remembered, the most important factor, is to be your own unique self. Fashions will fade, your confidence and belief in yourself (that very often can come from looking and feeling great) is what people will remember.

You will notice that I don’t always follow rules for fashion and I most certainly like to find things that are different.  I have been told that I like to take fashions and make them my own…Now it’s time for you to use your unique style to help you create success and confidence in your life!

We all have experiences that can knock us down, make us feel self-doubt or feel defeated, in fact, there are some times in our life where that is what we feel more than anything else.  If we have a foundation of confidence and determination then it will make those times much easier to handle.  It certainly doesn’t mean that we won’t ever face challenges because we have no control over what other people do, but what it does mean is that we will be able to handle those challenges.

Have you ever found yourself in a place in your career where you have ended up working for someone that has not treated you well, disrespected you, or devalued you?  My guess is that at some point during your career you may have felt at least one or more of these things.  I went through an experience over the past few years that directed me into starting this blog so I could share my experiences.  I don’t feel angry about it anymore, I feel grateful that I was able to see the situation as a great learning opportunity…

I am sure you have heard the expression “Fight, Flight or Freeze”…Which category do you fall into?  I have always been a FIGHT girl, my first reaction is to attack rather than be attacked, and I have to admit it has served me well in my chosen career, it has given me the determination I needed to get through tough times.  That doesn’t mean that if it’s not your natural tendency to fight for things, that you can’t still do that…we are just talking about your initial reaction.  If you were placed in a life or death situation, if your life or someone you love’s life were in danger, would that change your reaction?  If the answer is yes, then think about this – your life is in danger (at least from a happiness and peace perspective).  How do you feel now?  Are you willing to fight for yourself…develop your confidence and make your life happy and successful?

If you feel like it would help your confidence to wear something that I am wearing in this post, then feel free to click the links and shop below 🙂

Style – It’s all in the Details

“You will never influence the world by being just like it!”

One of the most important things to me when I am putting together an outfit is to make sure that I am putting my own unique stamp on what I’m wearing.  Unless you are buying one of a kind pieces or shopping in really obscure places, chances are that you are going to end up with clothes in your wardrobe that are just like other people’s clothes.   We all tend to shop at a lot of the same stores, so when we end up with the same pieces what do we do to make our look unique?  What do you do to make yourself stand out?  It’s all in the details…

The outfit combination I put together in today’s post is a little different because of a couple of reasons:

  1. A unique, statement necklace
  2. A plain T-shirt that is knotted at the front
  3. A lace skirt that is really eye-catching

When you add together these three things, it makes the outfit my own personal style.

What are some things that you have tried to make your outfit unique?  Whether it’s accessories, a statement piece of clothing, a funky pair of shoes or just a really unique combination of pieces that make the whole outfit really distinct, putting your own stamp on your outfit is what is really going to transform your look and make you stand out.

Here are some ideas for style creativity that you may not have thought about before…try wearing a your clothes in different ways.

  1. Add a belt to a plain shift dress to add a little color and change
  2. Wear a midi length raincoat in fall with just some fishnets and nude shoes
  3. Add a sequined top under a business suit to give an unexpected look
  4. Add a silk patterned belt to a denim dress or onto your jeans to add a splash of color
  5. Invest in a great pair of “wow” shoes to add to a plain dress to spice it up
  6. Add a statement piece of jewelry (like this necklace) or a big cuff
  7. Check out celebrity and blogger styles to see what they are doing.  Do some bargain shopping to find similar pieces and adapt what you have seen to your own style

It would be a really fun exercise to see if you have any of the pieces I am wearing and if you can style them your own unique way.  If you do really like anything in this post, you an shop them by clicking the links below 🙂

I would love to see pictures of you in some unique styles that you have created!  Send me an email…

A Touch of Silver

“Never be afraid to laugh at yourself, after all you could be missing out on the joke of the century!”

Ok so for those of you how know me, you know that I have a very English (dry) sense of humor, I like to be sarcastic and very “cheeky” sometimes but most of the time, I am driven and determined.  So…the picture in this post is me doing something that you may probably never see caught on camera again.  I was doing my “I have had enough of taking pictures” or “I am a blogger and this is what we do” pose.  Either way, it’s not something I do very often and to get it caught on camera…is pretty crazy!  The reason I posted this picture is because I wanted to show that even though I really don’t like to be seen doing this kind of thing…I am OK to not be perfect and kind of make fun of myself.  If I can’t laugh at yourself I’m in big trouble, right?!

The Mules and cute little Silver Michael Kors bag are a great accent to this great embroidered dress – the dress didn’t need much, so I thought a touch of Silver would finish off the outfit perfectly.  If I were to find another pair of shoes or bag, I could have also chosen Red or even Green.

I have to admit it’s kind of hard for me to cram everything I need into such a small bag, so I usually only use this size of bag when I am going on a date with my wonderful husband, a girls night out or some other special event.  It’s hard sometimes to be hassling transferring all my junk from one bag to another, so I have to admit I’m definitely guilty of finding a bag I really like and just sticking with it until I get bored.

I do think it’s a great idea to have a few small bags like this one, or a clutch or even one of the boho style wallets that you can fit a lipstick into or your phone for when you go out.  I definitely love dressing up a  little and finishing off an outfit with a great bag makes me somehow feel like I didn’t miss a piece.

You can click here to get this Michael Kors bag and here to get these great BCBG mules….hurry before the warm weather is gone!
