Be You – Be Different

“Being different isn’t a bad thing, it means you are brave enough to be yourself!”

There are so many things that make us different from everyone else, but we live in a world where it’s almost frowned upon to be different. The sad thing about that is that there are so many reasons that the world needs YOU just as you are, not someone trying to fit in or be like everyone else.

Being different, standing out, expressing yourself just as you are, that takes real courage…but most importantly it means YOU have to know who YOU are!

I don’t know if any of you remember that movie “Runaway Bride”? In that movie Julia Roberts was engaged at least 3 or 4 times and each time literally ran away from the wedding as the groom was standing on the altar. Nobody knew why she did it for a long time, in fact, she gained a reputation and it was newsworthy enough that a reporter went to her small town to write about it. Turns out that what she actually did was fit into a mold of exactly what she thought each of the grooms wanted her to be. Whatever eggs they liked, she liked too. In summary, she pretty much didn’t show up to any of the relationships as herself, and when the reality hit (on the wedding day) she couldn’t go through with it.

I have seen this so much in life, it’s so easy to fall into line with what we think everyone else wants us to be, so much so that we give up who we really are. The problem with that is that the real us is still inside just stuffed down somewhere out of sight, and it means that we can’t ever find complete fulfillment or happiness until we let her or him out!

I have always been a very strong person, but there have definitely been times in my life when I have been afraid to let people see who I really am – specifically in relationships for fear that they wouldn’t love me, or they would leave. I am not the type of person that can live like that, so at some point, usually when I couldn’t take it anymore, I would explode and pretty much blow the relationship anyway. Even with Brandon and I it took me a long time to realize that it was OK to be 100% myself.

I have learned that I don’t need permission to express myself, it doesn’t matter to me if everyone loves everything about me, because I have found that the more authentic and real I am, the more people love being around me anyway.

I love to express my feisty personality through my style, and I have found that the more I love me, the more I love who I am, the more happy I am. My style is uniquely me – and I will always keep it that way! In fact, the jacket that I’m wearing in this post is one that I had customized for me…I saw something similar on Pinterest and had my mum knit it and create my one exactly how I wanted it! What’s better than that?

Being unique is one thing that we all have in common, and it’s exactly what the world needs!

If you could do one thing today that you have been afraid to do, what would it be?

We All Need Inspiration

“No one ever injured their eyesight by looking on the bright side!”

Recently I had someone ask me if I have always wanted to write a blog…and it got me thinking.  What I realized is that even though I started by blog only a few years ago, I have kind of always loved style, fashion, walking to the beat of my own drum as well aDon’t compare…empower, use your style & fashion for confidence, seek inspiration helping others reach their potential.

It has always given me great satisfaction to be able to be there, to help and empower my friends & family – so when I started working on Stylequeenie I kept this in mind.  I think that in the world we live in there is so much negativity and that is perpetuated by social media and our perceptions of the lives that people lead based on what we see them doing on Instagram, Facebook etc.  I have heard stories of people shaming or bullying on social media and it breaks my heart.  I realize that it is easy because it can almost be hidden from the world…to shame another person really sets us back individually, and aren’t we here to grow?

There are times when I compare myself and what I do to others, but that is probably the most self-defeating thing that anyone can do.  Comparison is the thief of joy – it robs us from feeling good about ourselves, who we are and what we are capable of!

The world is definitely big enough for everyone, but it’s up to us to carve our own niche!  I know that there are people out there that know so much more than I do about blogging, empowerment, style and so on, but that’s OK with me…in fact I use it to my advantage.  Have you ever heard the expression that “success leaves clues”?  What that means is I can seek inspiration from others and use that to make me better.  When I first started my career in sales I made it my goal to surround myself with successful, powerful sales people that I could learn things from.  I took what they did and adapted it to create a style for myself…and because I know that technique worked for me in the past, that is what I do now with blogging and my social media.

I feel confident and happy in my own skin, I am learning to find more joy in my journey of life because I think it’s important to do so much more than just exist.  I know there are varying degrees of motivation, confidence and determination, but think about this…what if someone out there needs what you have to offer?  What if what you have is exactly what they need to save their life??

I believe in the philosophy of “pay it forward” for this very reason.  I believe that we are all pieces in a puzzle and the only way that puzzle can be complete is if we all believe in ourselves and work on reaching our potential!

I always tie in style and fashion with my blog posts because I do believe that when you feel good about yourself, when you tell yourself that you like who you are and how you look, that is what is going to be seen by the outside world.  I have always considered style to be a way to express your unique personality, and as such, something that EVERYONE should pay attention to.  I realize that not everyone is as enamored by style and fashion as I am, and for some it seems harder…but just like I said about following the clues of those that are successful, you can do the same with style and fashion.  Sometimes all you need to do is seek a little inspiration and adapt it to yourself!  You can shop similar looks to those I am wearing in this post by clicking the links below!

I hope this Wednesday that you will realize how important & how beautiful you are – and that no matter whether anyone says otherwise, you are ENOUGH!!

Adding a Pop of Color

“Boldly be a pop of color in a Black and White world!”

I have spoken extensively with many friends and people I know and one of the topics I wanted to expand upon is how easy it is to add a little spice to an outfit by adding a pop of color.

Not everyone is adventurous when it comes to styles, fabrics or even colors, in fact, I see a lot of people that stick to neutrals or just Black and most of their wardrobe comprises of these colors.  It’s hard to change what you have always done, what you are comfortable with, or what you already own completely…so here’s what I always suggest:  Add a pop of color…

Adding color doesn’t have to be over-thought, it doesn’t need to be expensive but most importantly it should not make you feel uncomfortable!

Here are some simple ways of adding a pop of color – and to make it even more interesting, at the bottom of this post you can shop some of my top picks by clicking the shop direct links:

  1. A pair of shoes/boots…I listed this one first because that is exactly what I am wearing in this post. The outfit is simple denim with a White blouse, and a pale Grey jacket making the outfit very muted so…I added this fabulous pair of satin embroidered booties in kelly Green.  Another amazing sale purchase from Zara, but you can find some similar picks below…
  2. Jewelry – this is by far the simplest and least obtrusive.  In fact, even by just adding a bright pair if earrings you can add a little funk to an ordinary outfit, but to take it even further, add bold necklaces, or bracelets to continue with the bold theme.
  3. Bags – There are so many different styles, colors and brands of bags that it’s easy to see how this could really become hard to figure out what works the best.  It’s also difficult to change purses regularly unless you have an insert in your bag making it easy to switch.  I like to switch my bag at least once a month, anything more than that for me is just a pain because I always end up forgetting something and then needing it only to find it’s in a bag I had used LAST!  With all of that said, having a bold and bright bag is a great way to really take your outfit to another level.
  4. A scarf or hat – I am not really a big hat wearer, but I do love adding a cool scarf in leopard, Red or even Pink just to add some sass to my outfit style.
  5. Sunglasses or glasses – let’s talk about sunglasses first.  Accessorizing with sunglasses is only something that works on a nice day and not so much at night…but adding a really funky pair of cat eye shades or bright, big frames sunnies is going change your whole look.  I have an amazing pair of Alexander McQueen Red shades and I love wearing them because they are so bright and noticeable. Reading glasses or regular glasses are now being made in such funky, bright styles that you can also use these to add some color.  I have a friend that wears their reading glasses around their neck on a chain and they are such a great accessory to their outfit.

Simple ideas to add a pop of color, yet I know there are many, many people that just stick to what they have always done because they are afraid to try something new and bold.  I am in no way saying that if you are happy with everything about your look and your confidence that you need to change it…these suggestions are only to give you ideas that you can incorporate if you are trying to find new looks or try new things.

Finally, don’t mistake wearing a pop of color to mean that you need to become a color explosion…I always say that at least when you are starting out trying new things…LESS IS MORE!!

Happy Monday…here’s to time moving more quickly during the week 😉

Top 5 Style Trends to Help you Make it Through Winter

“If you want to go big, stop thinking small!”

There are just some styles that are timeless, ageless and for any season!  Leopard print works for just about any season, but I especially love it in the Fall and Winter, and find that there are so many great outfit options…

For today’s outfit I just grabbed a Black turtle neck, Black pants and some funky block heeled dark Green shoes.  The Leopard jacket is just the icing on the cake, and pulls the whole look together.

I think we all have that “go to” look that no matter what we can just pull it out of the closet and run.  For even the most novice style conscious dresser, adding a leopard jacket over a plain Black outfit is something that doesn’t require a lot of thought, planning or even coordination.  In fact, all you need to do is throw on the jacket and run…

If you are looking for some simple yet stylish ideas to get you through the last months of Winter…here are five of my favorites:

  1. A faux fur jacket, vest or accents – even if you are against animal cruelty, faux fur is one of those fashion essentials that works for any age.  You can throw a jacket over your already fabulous outfit, add a vest to make your current outfit pop or just find a great sweater with fur accents, or even a scarf to add a touch of something that is uniquely you to your outfit.
  2. Sock booties – I honestly can tell you I don’t know what I did before these were invented.  I love how they cling to my legs so they work under a pair of pants or with a skirt, don’t require zipping, and especially love how sexy they look with a funky pair of tights.
  3. We’ve already talked about leopard – but i’ll list it here anyway!
  4. Glitter or sparkles – like the Silver leggings I own, a sequined piece or just something to lift your spirits on a Grey day!
  5. Red lipstick – there’s nothing more bold then a great Red lipstick in the winter.  Typically your skin will be a little paler, you might be feeling a little drab, a lot of winter colors tend to be darker, so add a pop of Red to your lips and pucker up!

Of course, as you look at this list, don’t just wear something because I say they’re my favorites…if sparkles or glitter are not YOU…then don’t do it!!

Style Your Own World…

“Don’t let anyone in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are!”

The Fashion Industry brings out “new” colors and styles every season, and pretty much they are just a variation from something that has already been around.  Some you might love and want to wear and others you won’t want to be seen dead wearing…so how do you decide what does and doesn’t work for YOU?

Just because a color or style is “in” doesn’t mean that it is something you have to wear, or something that will look good on you.  Trust me, there are some styles that have been around before and I didn’t like them before, so chances are I’m not going to like them this time either.

I am pretty in tune with what works for me and what doesn’t, but there are still times when I go shopping and think that I would like to try something new.  So, I grab a few things, take them into the changing room, and here’s the important part…once I have them on, I really give myself a close look in the mirror and evaluate myself based on what I know about myself.  If something I’m wearing isn’t in tune with my style, my personality, my lifestyle or my environment, I don’t buy it.  We all come from different walks of life, have different upbringings, different home and work environments, and also we all live in different climates.

Just to put things in perspective, here are a few things I currently avoid and why:

  1. Hot pants or booty shorts – I feel like unless I am on the beach, they are inappropriate for my age and I feel like they make me look “trashy”.
  2. Outfits that show off too much cleavage – again the age thing, but also because I feel like I like to leave more to the imagination.  In my experience, less is more and is much more classy!
  3. Cowboy boots – not that they don’t look great, they are just not in tune with my personality.
  4. Overalls – I wore them at one time but I feel for me, it’s better to leave that in the past 😉
  5. Mom jeans – again this is a style I have worn before, and when I went in and looked at pictures of myself then I wish myself now would have told me NO!!  Mom jeans are great for many body types, however they do have a tendency to accentuate your stomach and make it look larger than it actually is.

Of course the things I avoid may be some things you like, and you should definitely wear what is in YOUR style…

The key to style is being true to yourself!  As you see magazines, blogs, TV, Instagram, Pinterest and many other social channels you will see lots of variations in styles, some of which you may love and others you may hate.  As you look at the different styles, stay in tune with yourself and if you want to learn and expand your style…watch those that resonate with you.  We are all works in progress, just as styles, seasons and colors change, so do our experiences.  Very often our experiences mold the styles we have and who we are.

I make it my goal to learn something new every day, and if you can take one thing from this post, I would say that be open to new possibilities but don’t ever deviate from what feels good for you.  The better you feel about your style and how you look, the more confidence and assurance in yourself you will have!

A Simple Guide to Mixing Fabrics

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us!”

‘Tis the season for luxurious fabrics and styles…in fact, the more sparkly, glittery, fluffy and cozy the better.  It can be really fun to mix patterns, fabrics and styles and create some amazing looks that will really help you stand out and be noticed during the Holiday season.

Deciding which fabrics work together can be a little overwhelming, so here are some simple guidelines that you can work with if you are a little unsure of what may or may not work well together:

  1. Don’t try to be too “matchy” – I have noticed that when I try to match my the fabrics of my outfit too closely it just ends up failing miserably.
  2. Choose only fabrics or prints that you are comfortable wearing – if you are not someone that likes to have themselves introduced before they even speak, you will probably want to steer clear of prints like leopard, snake or sequins.
  3. Mixing leather with satin or lace is always a great “go to” look because it adds an element of femininity and softens the whole leather look.  Of course leather can fall into that category of being one of those fabrics that you really have to be comfortable wearing, so make sure that if you are going to wear it, you are really going to “rock it!”
  4. For a really luxurious look, pairing velvet with fur is not only classy but it is also really warm and cozy.
  5. Adding a loose wool sweater over a form fitting knitted or satin midi length skirt and a pair of sock booties adds lots of different fabrics and textures and is perfect for a really cold business day!
  6. Experimenting can be really fun, but also overwhelming if you are not sure what really works for you. Before you try anything on, it is always a good idea to hold the fabrics up against each other, and then also up against your body.  That way you can see objectively by looking at it while you’re not wearing it and also in a mirror against your body and skin tone.

These are just a few ideas you could use yourself, and adapt to work for your own unique style.  The outfit I am wearing shows mixing leather, velvet, snakeskin, fleece, and satin which is a lot of different fabrics and patterns, but it all works.  Each one is different enough that they compliment each other.  Even if you used just two or three of these different fabrics the look would still be really classy.

There are definitely some styles and trends that are a little more versatile, whereas others are definitely more edgy.  If you are more of a risk taker, experimenting with furs, leather and satin are a great way to create some really unique looks.  I love to experiment with leather and fur, because I really believe that they can both be worn for so many different occasions and can really transform an outfit from ordinary to unique.

What are your go-to fabrics and what is the one fabric that you haven’t been brave enough to try?

I would love to hear from you…

Pop of Pink…

“Most obstacles melt away when we open up our minds to walk boldly through them!”

Disclosure:  Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through or make a purchase.

Black on black is a great combination no matter the season, but do you know what is even better than black on black?  Adding a pop of bright color – such as this great fuchsia pink!

While I am firm believer in expressing yourself however you feel is most appropriate for your own unique style, I do think it’s important to be willing to look and try new things.  If you feel that you are not confident enough to wear the pink color as a stand alone, by adding an accent or “pop” of this color, it means that you are able to still remain true to yourself but also be a little more bold than usual.  I know black is the universal color for many, many people, and I love it too…but I definitely like to add other colors as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to talk anyone out of wearing black, because there are so many reasons that black is great, such as:  it is a very slimming color, it works for just about every occasion, it can really be sexy when you wear the right things, and finally, it is all about being comfortable in your own skin…and if black makes you feel that, then that is what you should do 🙂

What if you just added a small expression of your personality?  What would that look like for you?  Would you wear a pair of bold accent boots or shoes like I did in this post?  Would you add a touch of leopard or gold?  If you feel like a pair of shoes or boots is a little much, how about accessories?  Would you wear a scarf, a funky necklace, or even a belt?  Have you experimented with accessories?

Your confidence will only grow the more you are willing to expand your comfort zone and try new things…

Hiding behind certain colors or styles doesn’t enable you to fully express yourself, so why not add a touch of something more to help your confidence in yourself and how you look grow.  I do believe that it is important to be bold, however, if you really don’t feel that you can “own” a look that you are trying, then you probably should start smaller.  For example, I am wearing a full length faux fur leopard print coat today and I LOVE it…but not everyone could pull it off – not because not everyone would look good in it, but more because they have to believe it and not everyone is as bold as I am.  I am definitely not the most extreme on the spectrum when it comes to being unique, but I certainly like to push boundaries and not everyone else feels the same way.  Whatever you choose to wear or try out, believe that you look great and you will start to feel that!!

I believe that we all have a side of us that is just waiting to burst out, we just need to open the door 🙂

Time to Pull out the Fur…

“Wear your confidence like a badge of honor”

Thanksgiving is officially over, and as the end of the year draws closer, we know that colder weather is sure to follow.  One of the things I love so much about Utah is how amazing the valley and mountains look in the winter, it really is a winter wonderland (or at least I love it when I’m looking outside from a warm, cozy, fire-filled room).  Knowing that I don’t love to be cold, I have resigned myself to the fact that I’m going to face it no matter what, and I have bought myself some amazing coats that keep me cozy and look great!

The jacket I’m wearing in this post is one that I actually bought in August and have had it sitting, waiting to wear since then.  I have a few fur type coats and jackets but none are as unique as this one with the bead details.  You may or may not have figured this out about me by now that I love to wear at least one statement piece for each outfit, so wearing this, nothing else is really needed to make the outfit pop!  I love to find unique things and the reason I love them is because they make me stand out.  I have never been one to be OK to be part of the crowd, I have never been a shrinking violet, I kind of love the attention that wearing something bold and unique gets me!  (I’m not too proud to admit it 🙂 )

We all have ways that we like to dress, even if you feel like you don’t dress well, you have certain things that you buy, you very often put them together the same way, and what you wear will say a lot about what you think about yourself.  I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with that, but you should always ask yourself before you dress “what do I want people to see when they look at me”?  Of course, once people know you they are going to decide what they do and don’t like about you based on your behavior and personality and not just how you look.  The question is, are you going to get that far before someone decides?

If you are looking for ways to show people your personality without having to speak, what you wear will absolutely do that.  If you are someone that likes to blend in and not be noticed, people are going to know that just as they are going to know if you are cocky or arrogant.  While I do like to stand out and be noticed, I have to be careful that I don’t overwhelm people by being too bold (at least not all the time, and certainly not for important occasions such as business appointments, interviews, church, etc).

Whoever you are, someone is going to want to know you, so even if you don’t want to be too bold, do you want to hideaway.  I have seen people that are truly beautiful both on the inside and outside, but they are too afraid to show people how amazing they really are, and I think that is such a waste.  Obviously, how you express your style is your choice, but before you make that decision, why not consider this…those people you meet are missing out by not knowing or SEEING the real you!  Something to think about!

If you are as much in love with this jacket as I am – you can shop it by clicking the link here from Mirina Collections.

What if there were NO Rules?

“Courage is being yourself everyday in a world that tells you to be someone else!”

If you woke up one day and found out that there were no hard and fast fashion rules that you need to follow…how would that make you feel?

Well, here’s what I would like to tell you – with all the different styles of fashion around, with people taking greater care of themselves and with the different lifestyles everyone leads, there truly are no rules.  We all have different interests, we all love to spend time doing different things, and finally we are all different on the inside as well as on the outside.  Shouldn’t we express ourselves in a way that is true to who we are both on the inside and outside?

Now you know you are free to do whatever you want with your style, I did want to mention that although there aren’t any rules, there are definitely mistakes we can make that may cause us to not look our best, and even worse, things that can age us!

Here are some things you can do that will minimize the aging process and allow us to look amazing even into our later years in life:

  1. Now we’re in fall and winter is around the corner, tights can be our best friend…however, be careful the styles and colors you pick.  Just wearing opaque black with every outfit or wearing nudes are definitely more likely to age you.  Instead, try a pair of patterned, fishnets, different colors or finer opaques to mix things up a little and add a little sass to your look.
  2. Make sure that you dress appropriately for your body type. I always say that just because something comes in your size doesn’t mean that you should wear it.  Wearing clothes that cling in the wrong places, clothes that make you look boxy or even worse something that is too short, is a sure fire way to ensure that you actually look older than you are.
  3. One of the worst things you can do is go shopping and buy an entire outfit that you see on a mannequin.  I have found that it is better to be more subtle with your styling and pick a couple of things that are new and in style rather than going for everything you see.  Remember, the goal is to do what is right for you not what everyone else is doing or what the stores are telling you to do.
  4. Never, never, never get too carried away with accessories.  Just think “less is more” when accessorizing and just in case that isn’t clear, follow the direction of Coco Chanel “When accessorizing always take off the last thing you put on”.
  5. If you are big believer in all things that are Black, don’t despair, you can still do that, but try to add at least a little pop of color to brighten up your complexion.  I always try to add a bright or bold lipstick to my Black outfits…you could also add a cute purse or bag, a contrasting pair of shoes or even a few accessories.

The ultimate goal should always be YOU…

“Be yourself, no one can ever tell you you’re doing it wrong!”

Adding A Little Mystery To Your Look

“She loved mysteries so much that she became one!”

As a woman it’s easy to get tired of wearing yourself on your sleeve. Nobody wants to look simple, easy, or boring. The mysterious look can make you feel a lot more sexy, confident, and fun. Perfect for attracting a little curiosity and inviting some new encounters. Here are a few ways you can instantly mystify those you encounter and look like the interesting lady you are.

Keep it classy

A little class is underrated in a big way. So many women are intent on making a statement in what they wear, that sometimes it’s important to realize that fashion can conceal as well as reveal. You don’t have to be exuberant, and following the French model of ladies’ fashion can be a great way to see that in full effect. There’s no need for high-heels, push-up bras, ostentatious logo displays, or heavy makeup.

The right do

That doesn’t mean you can’t have a little flourish. You can avoid all the usual signs of screaming for attention, which will actually attract people to want to find out more about you  The expression “less is more” immediately comes to mind.  Your hair can be one of the best tools to do that. Curly hair extensions can be a great way to immediately change your profile. Whether it’s providing just the right of cover for your features, which actually invites curiosity or adds a dazzling change to your silhouette from behind. Well maintained curls look sexy and powerful, and people can’t help but have their eye drawn to them.

Inviting curiosity

The same can be done with the right pair of shades. The appeal of the unknown is very real. Even if you’re dressing casually, a good pair of shades can add that. Dressing to your body shape is very good at highlighting what you like best about yourself.  Don’t feel like you have to show everything.

The piece that tells the story

A lot of women rely on logos, graphics, and blatant signs to tell a story. But the truth is that accessories, just like sunglasses, can do it just as well if not better. Find your trademark accessory piece, something that sticks out just enough from the outfit to catch the eye.

Confidence, not cockiness

This is something that many women get wrong when trying to go for the mysterious look. You can be collected, confident, and charming without being aloof or rude. The latter doesn’t make people curious, it makes people not want to be around you. The difference is all in the smile. Take care of your smile, show it often, and draw a little attention to it by adding a little color to your cheeks exfoliating your lips.

An air of mystery can ooze just the right mix of class and appeal the next time you go out or help you better present the person you feel like you are. If anything, it can be fun to enjoy a little more attention and intrigue from time to time.

And remember…Classy is when a Woman has everything to flaunt but chooses not to show it!
