Love your Life

Be so busy loving your life that you have no time for hate, regret and fear!

OK – so we all know consciously that we only have one life to live and that we need to make the most of it…but I sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in what is NOT great, what’s wrong and the fact that our life may not be looking exactly like our expectation of how it should look.

When you were little did you have an idea of what your life was going to look like? Did you imagine yourself with 2.5 children, the perfect spouse, and a lovely well kept home? I know that I had an idea, or even an expectation, of what my life should look like. I wanted the marriage, the children, the unconditional love, the career, basically the fairytale…but I found out very early on that my life wasn’t going to take that path. I started out WITHOUT a fairytale relationship, became a single mum, moved from England by myself to the U.S. to create a life for myself and Dalton, my son. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pay the bills, I juggled paying the utilities, electricity and gas bills and had one or other of them disconnected at least once. It was a challenge, but I was up for that challenge!

I was so attached to the idea of having that perfect life that at times I felt like a failure. I felt like I wasn’t enough. I felt like my life sucked! Then something happened to make me see things differently. I had some friends that made me start to believe in myself again. Through talking me through what I DID have and make me start appreciating it again, I was able to start believing that I could have the life I wanted. It started with me being more than OK with where I was at that time, in fact, I started to feel that even if I never met anyone and spent the rest of my life with just Dalton – then that was enough for me!

Things didn’t start out ideal or PERFECT, but after a few years, I met Brandon and everything really changed. After a few more kids, we created the family that both Dalton and I had always wanted (although I’m pretty sure Dalton always wanted a sister, but I gave him 3 brothers instead 😉 ) .

Our family life has not always been a bed of roses, but it’s still amazing. Through the personal growth and development business that Brandon started we both grew stronger, happier and more fulfilled…but not without consistent effort, and that’s what I want to talk about today…

Being happy and loving your life when everything is going well is easy to do. It’s finding joy, fulfillment and happiness through the hard times – because there will always be hard times.

So how do you feel happy and fulfilled when all the cards seem to be stacked against you?

I found that the first step was to believe that I deserved to be happy no matter what. I embraced that mindset and a funny thing happened – I actually BECAME happy. My focus was on gratitude for what I DID have instead of what I DID NOT have! It may seem a little hard to believe but I am 100% certain that by appreciating how amazing my life was, focusing on my love for Dalton, my love for myself and my love for being in the U.S…that’s what allowed me to open the door for even greater things.

Are you in a place where you feel down or you’re not finding joy in your life? Does it seem like life is against you?

Life can be a dark place if we focus on dark thoughts, but it can also bring an amazing light into our lives when we focus on beautiful things, on appreciating what we have, what we’re grateful for and feel fulfilled knowing that we ARE ENOUGH.

I just wanted to share a little about what brought me here and why I will always focus on gratitude…

If you’re looking to improve any area of your life, I know with 100% certainty that whatever you focus on you get more of…so why not focus on all that is positive, good and amazing about yourself and this life?

Being Adaptable for Spring

Adaptation is a profound process. It means you figure out how to thrive in the world!

OK – so we are back to it being winter weather here in Salt Lake, & I thought it would be a great time to talk about how Spring is sometimes that unpredictable time of year where you can’t quite put away your jackets because you have hot days, freezing and snowy days and everything in between – so how do you stop that messing with your style mojo?

I was sitting out on the patio of a local restaurant for lunch on Monday and today I am huddled in my office with my heater blasting watching the snow/rain come down. Here’s the thing, and this has probably been one of the hardest things I have ever done, I am learning to surrender to the fact that I have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL over whether spring looks like it does today or its warm and sunny…

Last night I sat at my son’s High School baseball game with my winter coat, a beanie, gloves and a blanket as the snow came down. For spring baseball weather in Utah things like this have happened before but I hear that this is the worst or hardest baseball season they have had in over 20 years in regard to cancelling/postponing games, bad weather and the field condition…crazy, but NO control over it, right?!

So how do we adapt to not being able to fully transition from one season to the next, because my guess is that in a lot of places in the world, it is very unlikely that as soon as the first day of spring or a new season hits that the weather doesn’t come with it. March 20th was the first day of spring, and we are far removed from that now but still experiencing winter days…

By this time of year I am so ready to start wearing the cute new styles that spring has to offer, but I always keep a few colder weather favorites that allow me to transition into spring gracefully. I don’t think our style needs to have an EITHER / OR mentality. What I mean by that is that wearing some of your favorite colder weather/winter styles WITH some cute new spring looks is actually fabulous.

Yesterday for the baseball game I worse some great chino’s, some low cut booties, a T shirt and leather jacket. I took with me my almost full length winter coat for the baseball game along with the beanie and gloves…so all I did was pop those on when I got to the field. Meaning that I could still be stylish, feel good about my look during the rest of the day and yet still be prepared for that crazy snow! Sometimes having a coat or warmer jacket in your car to throw on if cold weather hits, and I ALWAYS carry an umbrella in my car just in case (I think that’s English Woman in me needing to be prepared for rain at all times 😉 ).

I see a light at the end of the tunnel, the sun is peeking through the clouds and I am ready to take on whatever weather gets thrown my way today!

What transition style could you create for yourself?

Have a fabulous Friday…

New Spring Trends to Try…

Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will!

I don’t know about you but I am always looking for inspiration of new things I can try, how I can adapt things to suit myself and how I can incorporate current styles that I love into new season styles.

I have been really excited by a few that I have found recently, so I wanted to share them with you. Spring is my favorite time of year for trying new things because Winter and Spring are so different here in Utah that it really gives me an opportunity to change dramatically.

I love the optimism that spring brings, I love to see all the blossoms and flowers, and I love that the nights are longer. I feel like I have so much more time to do the things I want to do and I get excited about riding my mountain bike again, hiking, walking my dog through the neighborhood, and spending time playing ball outside or hanging by the pool with the boys.

Here are some great new styles and outfits I am excited to try this spring, what styles are you looking forward to?

Add a scarf – but wear it differently. Why not try tying it at the back rather than the front?

A pair of wide legged pants paired with some crochet or just rainbow colors

Add a pair of statement earrings to spice up your style – if you really want to rock out, style a simple denim outfit with some amazing tassel earrings

Leather with lace – the ultimate in edgy femininity

Break up an all black outfit with some colorful accessories or shades

Looking for places to find some of these styles, I have linked some great deals below…just click the links below…

Denim & Florals

What makes things memorable is that they are meaningful, significant and colorful!

I can feel optimism in the air in anticipation for Spring and the beauty it brings. It is the perfect time to bring out some floral patterns, add a little color into your life, and feel the vibrancy of the season.

As I was growing up I was never a big fan of floral patterns, or even the color pink, but I can tell you that as I am getting older, I embrace my femininity and welcome any style that allows me to feel feminine, classic and confident. Of course, I also like to be uniquely me, so by adding a little denim, it was the way for me to show my style while embracing the femininity of this dress.

The amazing thing about floral patterns is that there are SO MANY to choose from. There are ones with large, tropical flowers and ones with smaller blossoms – both of which can have a bright or subdued undertone, and can fit your style perfectly. If your style personality is a little less bold, then stick to muted tones, and smaller flowers, whereas if you are a little more willing to let it all out, you could try some patterns that include reds, yellows and cobalt blue…depending on which color best suits your skin tone.

As we have been planning our spring break trip with the kids, I have been doing a little shopping (both online and in stores) and I have been excited to see that a lot of stores are already adding these prints (and they’re not all dresses). I found a few of my current favorites and linked them below – you can shop them by clicking the links.

The little denim jacket I am wearing (which is a little different and more dressy than a typical denim jacket) is one I had in my closet, but I have found some similar ones and linked them below. Honestly there is always a time I love to pull out a denim jacket…so having one to me is a wardrobe essential.

My shoes are again a pair I already had but I loved pairing the polka dots with the floral dress, to add even a little more sass. Mixing patterns is still something I am learning, it kind of goes against everything we have learned…but I have to tell you it’s been really exhilarating and fun – so why not give it a try! Because here’s the thing, nobody REALLY knows what does and doesn’t work, so even if you aren’t sure, there is a very low chance that you will get it wrong 🙂

This Monday is beautiful and sunny here in Salt Lake, and I am excited to start breaking out even more florals – what styles get you excited?

Where Focus Goes…

“You know why it’s hard to be happy?  Because we refuse to let go of the things that make us sad!”

Isn’t this the truth?  I have to admit I have been known to dwell on things, over think things, worry about things and even obsess about things…

Sometimes it’s easier said than done to let go of something rather than holding on to it – but I do know for a fact that even if that thing that you’re holding on to has been stuffed down, or pushed aside, it is in some way taking some of our energy and focus away from those positive things we should be focusing on in our lives.

As I was taking the pictures for today’s post, while it was lovely and warm unfortunately the wind was not cooperating and my hair was getting blown in all kinds of directions.  I’ll be honest, at one time in my life I would have become extremely frustrated about something like this…but today, my choice was to find the humor in the situation and even see if there is something I could learn from it.  I realized that taking pictures on a windy day is actually kind of fun – it made me appreciate that I could be outside rather than cooped up inside on a rainy or snowy day like the ones we have been getting recently.  I learned how to walk into the wind rather than against it so my hair was not blowing into my face.  Fast forward to this morning and we have snow again…talk about nature giving me the opportunity to grow and learn about not being able to control the weather! 😉

This is a funny example of letting go of something, but what if you have something that is BIG or a lot more personal or raw?  Again, choosing to focus on what could go RIGHT instead of what could go WRONG could actually change the outcome.  I promise I’m not crazy, like I said in my poster yesterday, our body is basically a magnet and we will attract either good or bad – depending on what we focus on!  Are you a glass is half full or empty kind of person?  Do you think about worst case scenarios and avoid certain situations just “in case” something bad happens?

A few years ago we took our kids to Catalina Island and if you know anything about the island, you know that there are very few cars there and the number one mode of transportation are golf carts.  Of course because we have all boys there was an interest in them having a chance to drive the golf cart and each have their turn.  Jack was around 10 at the time and he wanted his turn…it happened to be on a big hill driving by some lovely homes that had amazing yards and there were aloe vera plants everywhere.  As he started to drive down the hill the cart picked up a little more speed than he was expecting and he became a little spooked.  As the speed increased he seemed to be veering toward a flowerbed full of huge aloe vera plants, and no matter what we said about turning the wheel or braking the aloe vera plants got closer and closer. Finally, we stopped but not before he hit large bolder at the same time as the aloe plant!  Here’s what had happened…he had been focusing on NOT veering into the plants, but as he was staring at the plants, that is all he saw and his body AND the golf cart, were drawn to them.

I know this seems kind of crazy, but this same phenomenon happens with race car drivers.  When they focus so hard on not hitting the wall, that is exactly what they end up doing!

There are so many situations where focusing on something makes it happen, but yet there are still times when we choose to focus on the negative rather than the positive.  Changing how you think is not something that can happen overnight, so it requires practice.  I have found that the best way for me to practice is on something that is not quite so important…that way, if I screw it up, my whole world doesn’t implode.

Happy Tuesday – I hope your day is as great as you deserve it to be!

Lightweight Jacket

When life puts you in tough situations don’t say “why me” say “Try me”!

One thing that everyone needs, no matter the climate you live in, is a light-weight jacket.  I have a small obsession with jackets (amongst other things), and I like to carry a wide selection of colors, fabrics, and styles, just in case!  There are some outfits that look better with short box-style jackets, longer jackets or leather jackets, so I like to make sure I have the right one for a given occasion.

Spring is in full bloom, and in Utah we have been experiencing very sporadic weather, warm days followed by rain and snow.  Even on the warmer days, the mornings are still cold, so even if I am headed to work or a baseball game, I have to wear a jacket.  If you are not someone that has a huge closet, that is fine, just make sure you have a more formal/business style jacket as well as one that is more casual.

The jacket I am highlighting today is one I have had for a few years, but it is kind of timeless.  It has leather accents, knit accents and lots zippers to add another dimension (you can find a similar one here).  Even if you don’t like the style of this jacket, there are so many other styles you can choose from, because at some point you are going to need one.  I have talked about this before, and it still rings true, a jacket or coat should be an extension of your outfit rather than an after-thought.  What that means is, it looks better if you try to keep it within the same style that you are wearing.

I have put together a selection of jackets that I really like and you can click on the links below if you like any and easy as 1, 2, 3 you can order it online 🙂

Easter Sunday

“Everything around us is made up of energy.  To attract positive energy into your life, start by giving off positive energy.”

Today’s post is a quick one because I have been enjoying my day out by the pool, barbequeing and loving spending time with my family this Easter Sunday.

I love the warm days and evening where we can enjoy a few laughs, eat great food, and spending time together.  We opened the pool today and the boys have been swimming already (we keep it open a lot of the year by just heating it the day before we want to swim…although today it didn’t require much warming!)  I pulled out all the patio cushions and the umbrella’s because I really do think that we will be having many more days outside on our patio by the pool 🙂

A quick note about the outfit – this is a dress I bought last year from H&M because I loved the pattern and colors, because it’s spring I felt like it was a good time to pull it out again.  It is a shirt style dress that has the rounded hem and is just above the knee (perfect for a warmer day).  The shoes are not Valentino – I would definitely love to own a pair of those, but these are an imitation Sam Edelman pair, that I think will work for now (they are definitely more affordable).

As we head into the week I wanted to leave you with a note of positivity and optimisim because as we know, the way we feel and therefore what we focus on determines the types of experiences we will have and I want to make sure that as I head into this upcoming week (especially since it is my first days back after a week-long vacation), that I feel energized, confident and happy to be doing what I am doing.  The more I focus on my success rather than how things are NOT working, I find that more success is attracted to me.

Spring Inspiration

“There is no competition because nobody can be ME!”

As a follow up from yesterday’s post about how quickly spring is approaching, I wanted to showcase some of my favorite styles so you can get your hands on them too!

Sometimes we know that we want to find new styles but don’t know where to start, that’s where this post comes in…why not let someone else do the leg work for you?

Spring is in the air…why not let it come into your wardrobe too?
