Shine a Little

“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within”

Christmas is the season for so many things: Family time, present buying, parties and friends. Even if you’re not spending your time going to parties or spending it with friends, there’s definitely nothing wrong with “shining” a little. I know, sounds a little strange, but we hear a lot about making a good impression or dressing for an occasion, and all of those are great, but unless you are letting your inner light shine, are you really making a good impression?

I have spent the past few years becoming more and more aware of how my actions and behavior most definitely changes the outcome that I get. I realized a few years ago when I was going through a kind of dark time in my life, that if I wanted light or positivity to show up in my life then I had to be the start of that light.

Sensitivity to energy is something we all have but some more than others. I noticed that when I surrounded myself with people that didn’t evoke a positive feeling in me, or even worse that made me feel dark or even down, I wasn’t able to be as resilient to certain situations or when adversity hit my life. I realized that I must also be doing that to others too when I was not putting off a positive or light energy.

This may sound a little woo-woo, but I can attest 100% that I had to change MY behavior before anything in my life would change. I had actually reached the point where I didn’t even like being around me because I knew I was more focused on negative than positive, and I was more likely to see the cup as half empty rather than half full.

I don’t know if you have ever experienced this yourself or not, but even if you haven’t I am sure you have been around someone and for some reason you just felt a weird around them or they felt a little “off” and you couldn’t figure out why. Before someone even speaks our body is picking up on their energy and if that energy isn’t good, we may not understand exactly what is happening but chances are we feel uncomfortable or don’t want to be around them.

I made a choice to change my energy, to focus more on positivity and on bringing more light to others. After making a choice to do this and working on it every day, I have noticed that the more light I give off, the more light I actually get in return. If you haven’t heard the expression “you get what you give” I can tell you that for this example, it is exactly true. Just like the more love we give the more we get, it is true about light too.

So, as I plan spending family time tomorrow, amidst all the chaos of the Christmas season, I am focused on being the light in my home, in being the one that when someone feels like they need strength or positivity, that they can turn to me.

I don’t know if you experience this in your home or not, but I can tell you if I am having a bad day or I feel sad, EVERYONE in my house knows it. They know because the light or energy they are used to seeing from me isn’t present during my “down” times. I used to think that it was too much responsibility for me or that I didn’t want all of that to rest of my shoulders, but I have definitely changed my mindset so that now I think of it is as a privilege rather than a weight on my shoulders.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas…I hope your inner light finds its way to the surface and you have wonderful time filled with love and light!

“Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength!”

I remember being a teenager and feeling frustrated that I couldn’t do things that adults could and that I had rules that I felt were unnecessary!  It’s so weird, that I was wishing my life away and wanting to grow up so quickly.  Now that I am well into my forties my only regret is that I hadn’t spent my time wishing my years away.  Now I value my time, every minute, and I love who I am today.

I no longer focus too much on things that are going to happen, but rather I like to enjoy exactly what is going on in the here and now.  I realize how valuable time is and that every wrinkle and smile line is there because of the many experiences and the journey I have been on.

Aging is not for the faint of heart though – it is definitely something that is hard as a woman.  I still feel like I am 20 years old, and I want to be able to do all the things I used to be able to do.  That’s why staying healthy, staying in shape, taking care of my skin, my body and my mind are vital to me so that on the day that my kids decide to make me a Grandma, I can be the active, cool Grandma 🙂

I look in the mirror sometimes and don’t recognize the person I see.  Sometimes I notice more of my flaws and the signs of aging and other times, I truly see what is underneath and recognize my value.  As I already said, this getting older thing is something that needs quite a bit of faith and self love.

There are definitely some things about aging that we can’t control, but there are still some things we can do to ensure that we look the best as we’re doing it!  I am all in favor of doing things that make you feel good – whether that is great skin care, eating healthy, exercising, relaxation or anything else that tickles your fancy!

Above everything else, no matter what, I know that feeling good about myself makes my inner light shine and that is the best anti-aging thing anyone can do!

Have a blessed Sunday!

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

“If I asked you to name all the things that you love, how long would it take for you to name yourself?”

Having lunch with a friend today the topic of conversation was about not liking what we see when we look at ourselves in the mirror.  This can definitely be the case, and I have noticed that as I get older, there are more of those times than there used to be.  So how do we handle the fact that we can’t control the fact that we are getting older?  How do we feel good about our changing appearance?  What is it that makes us look and feel more youthful?

If this still isn’t ringing true for you…consider this:  Ever have a bad hair day and everything seems to go downhill from there, or ever go out knowing that what you are wearing isn’t flattering or your best look, or ever had a zit or mark on your face that makes you self conscious all day?  I guarantee that how you feel you look is much worse than anyone else will think about you.  Trust me when I tell you, other people are focused on themselves a lot more than noticing what might be wrong with you!

I have realized is that there are times when I feel good about how I look (and those times are not just when I have had time to do my makeup, or pamper myself).  Sometimes, I just like how I look!  I have drawn the conclusion that most of the time how I feel about how I look really has more to do about my attitude than anything else.  So how do we make sure we have a good attitude when we view ourselves in the mirror. There are always going to be things that stress us out, make us feel crappy, but honestly if we can feel great about ourselves, then everything else seems to just work itself out.

There are definitely things that make us feel better about ourselves and taking care of ourselves is one of them.  Dressing nicely, taking care of our skin, our bodies and making an effort to present ourselves in the best way is always a great start.

Taking time to learn new makeup techniques – eye makeup can be really overwhelming if you are not sure what will and won’t suit you…try some new ways of wearing makeup – click this link for some eyeshadow tutorials that are easy to use.

Again, I want to reiterate that when we look at ourselves and judge ourselves, our opinion doesn’t only come from what we are wearing, what we look like or our style, a vast majority of what we feel comes from our attitude.  We teach our children that they need to love themselves, but do we follow our own advice? Do we look at ourselves in the mirror and think “you are an amazing person” or do we look for our flaws and what is wrong?  It really helps me to look in the mirror each time I see myself and notice 3 things that I love about what I see…that way I have limited time to focus on what I don’t like!

Mirrors are all around us…so why not use them to our advantage.  The confidence you will see build because you appreciate yourself is only going to help you in all areas of your life!

Tips on Looking after Your Skin in Cold Weather

“Always make time for things that make you feel happy to be alive!”

When it gets colder outside, you might feel like your skin is getting drier by the minute, and your face looks dull and lifeless. Cold weather affects every skin type differently, but we all need to make changes when winter starts knocking to maintain our youthful appearance. No matter what your age is, you have to have a winter skin care routine to reduce the damage caused by harsh weather. Read some tips on how below…

Wash Your Face with Lukewarm Water

Instead of using hot water, switch to lukewarm or medium cold, so you energize the skin cells. Take a shower in the morning alternating warm and cold water, to start the circulation of the blood around the skin cells. Hot showers are harmful in the winter, as they dry your skin faster.

Moisturize More

In the winter, you will need to give your skin some extra care. You might be sitting in the office all day, jump in the car, blow the hot air in your face, and get out in the cold, humid air straight after. You need to feed the lost vitamins and minerals in your body regularly to maintain your youthful appearance for longer. Take a small tub with you in your handbag and use it whenever you feel like your skin is getting dry. Pay extra attention to your lips and take a vaseline based lip balm with you.

Use Your Night Cream

Even if you have neglected to use your night moisturizer in the summer, you should get it out and use it every night. Give your skin a chance to regenerate at night. Make sure that you wash off the excess in the morning, and avoid the oil clogging up your pores.

Go to the Sauna

The best way of maintaining the flexibility of your skin is to visit the sauna once or twice in the winter. You can have a cold shower or a dip in a cold tub after you finish the steam treatment, and restore the cells easily, get rid of dull dead skin cells, and release the toxins at the same time.

Humidify Your Home

Dry air is very bad for your skin, and the change in humidity levels between your home and the outside can cause damage. To reduce the risks, you can install a humidifier in your home, or install one on your heater, and maintain an equal level of humidity and temperature, protecting your skin.

Don’t Over-exfoliate

You need to look after the upper protective layer of your skin. Check out tips on how to exfoliate correctly to avoid damaging your skin. Don’t use your facial scrub more than once a week in the winter, and make sure you apply plenty of moisturizer after you are done.

Looking after your skin in the winter should be all about protecting and eliminating toxins. Avoid hot baths, visit the sauna, and use plenty of moisturizer during the day and night. Create a winter skin care routine that works for you and stick to it.

I don’t know about you, but I’ll definitely take any help I can get to keep looking younger for longer. It’s easy to start off with good intentions and let your routines slip as time goes on, but the only way to improve the appearance of your skin is to maintain a regular routine…Start off this week as you mean to go on – after all, you’re only hurting yourself if you don’t!

It’s in the Eyes

“Next time you think of beautiful things, don’t forget to count yourself in!”

Looking for a great way to accentuate your eyes?  I have always been a great fan of subtlety and not too much makeup, but I have to admit, I do LOVE to do the cat eyeliner!  It is something that can still be worn for work and professional environment, particularly if you don’t wear eye makeup that is too heavy.   The best way to create that look is by using a liquid liner (see some examples below).

If I were to pick 3 beauty supplies that I can’t live without it would have to be:  Lipstick, Eyeliner and Mascara (along with the Babe Lash that grows my eyelashes).  I have such fair eyebrows and lashes and even though they are long, I definitely need to add some Mascara and Liner to really make my eyes stand out!

I prefer to wear earth tones on my eyes, I feel like it  works really well with my Blue eyes.  I usually wear Black Eyeliner and Mascara because I prefer how they look, however, there are times when a little less is required, and then I choose light Copper and Brown liner.  For me the key is to not over-do it!  I prefer a more natural look – it definitely is more flattering for my skin type.

We don’t all have the same skin tones or types so whatever shades and techniques you have for wearing makeup, just make sure that they fit what you are wearing. If you are dressed more casually you probably don’t need as much makeup as you would if you were headed out to a party to special event.

Just like you need to dress appropriately, wearing the appropriate amount of makeup and choosing the right styles of application are just as important J

Accentuate your features – if you have beautiful eyes, then you will want to make sure you draw attention to those but not in a way that overwhelms them.

For the lips, choosing a color that compliments what you are wearing is always a rule of thumb for me…if I am wearing Browns or Neutral tones I tend to wear more Bronzes or Nudes. If I am feeling like wearing a bold lipstick, Reds are a great way to go – especially because there are so many different shades of Red that look amazing!

Casual in Black

“Life won’t sparkle unless you do!”

If you’re looking for a casual look with a little sparkle, today’s post shows you how to do just that.  With the holidays quickly approaching, finding sweaters with metallics is easy.  I like how this sweater is a little longer and just has highlights of sparkle rather than the whole sweater.  Not that there’s anything wrong with sparkle, but this is a little more understated so that it works for so many more occasions.

Longer sweaters that are looser around the waist are perfect for bodies with a thicker waist or problem areas around the tummy.  They look great when they hang looser, so make sure if you are picking out a sweater like this, either you try it on first if you are not 100% familiar with the size that will work for you, or plan on being able to return it if it is clinging in areas it shouldn’t  There is nothing worse than wearing a style that is made to be looser as tight fitting – if you are looking for something that is going to be form fitting, there are so many styles that are cut just that way so they are flattering in all the right areas.

My outfit was finished off by wearing some casual cut out jeans, block heel booties and a fabulous Hot Pink lipstick to pick out the Pink of the sweater.  I love adding Hot Pink lipstick, I see a lot more people wearing Reds at this time of year, which makes me want to be different 🙂

I have a harder time picking out casual clothes because I feel like I always need to be a little dressed up (that’s just how I was raised), so when I find something that can be worn in a dressy outfit but also works for casual wear, I know I’ve found a winner!

Casual Cravings

“Life isn’t perfect but your outfit can be!”

I have been having a lot of fun doing some research on some of my favorite shopping websites to come up with a great casual outfit.

From head to toe, this outfit shows pieces that I absolutely LOVE right now.  It would be a perfect outfit for daytime casual – whether you are shopping (hopefully not having to walk too far in those heels), or just having lunch with friends, it is the perfect combination of colors, styles, makeup and accessories.

I wanted to keep the fresh look so the makeup I chose is definitely more daytime makeup which doesn’t look too heavy for all day!

The purse is a perfect size for shopping but also for travel (if you want to carry on your Nook or iPad) etc if you are flying.

I love the pants because they look so comfortable and loose, yet they are really stylish.  The top is also loose fitting – it is pretty plain but is dressed up with the great emerald necklace.  Finally, the earrings are great because sometimes when you are out running errands, traveling or shopping, stud or smaller earrings rather than some drop earrings are the most practical…

Here are the details of the outfit…

Purse:  Tory Burch from Nordstrom   Booties:  Monique Lhuillier in Camel from    Pants:  WESC Elaine Pants from   Top:  Free People in Linen from Nordstrom    Necklace:  Kendra Scott from Nordstrom    Earrings:  Kendra Scott from Nordstrom   Eyeshadow:  Naked2 Palette from Ulta    Eyeliner:  Stila All Day Waterproof Eyeliner in Rich Chocolate from Ulta   Lipstick:  Bare Minerals in Make your Move from Ulta   Nail Polish:  Whim in Cocktails & Fairytales from Ulta

Sun Kissed

“Sun kissed skin, salty air and a magnificent view are all I need at the moment.”

I always feel better about myself when my skin has a little color.  After returning from vacation I am loving how my tan is making me feel better even in the cold weather in Utah.

I have never been big on a lot of Foundation or base, so I tend to try and stick to tinted moisturizer.  I know this doesn’t work for everyone, and trust me, I very often have problem areas (blotches and discoloration) that I need to cover with concealer.  However, especially when I have some sun, I feel like I can get away with more.

Obviously keeping your skin sun tanned all the time is not good, but there are other options out there to help with this feel.  I have tried the sunless tanning and I like that because it looks completely natural with no dangerous side effects.  I have tried a couple of the sunless tanning lotions, but haven’t found one that I really like – perhaps you could give me feedback on that.

For your face, try some bronzer, there are lots of different options for that – make sure you pick one that will work for your skin color.  Here is an example of one that would work for pale or mid-tone skin – Mac Mineralize Skin Finish in Global Glow!  Be careful to not over-do the color – the key is to be natural.

You could make winter feel a little shorter by creating your own sun kissed look!

Holiday Makeup

“I believe that all Women are pretty without makeup and pretty powerful with the right makeup.”  Bobbi Brown

I had a little fun today with a Holiday Makeover.

Coming up with new ideas for the Holidays and ways to look a little different and stand out is sometimes hard to do on your own. I enlisted the help of Jason Joy from Joy Salon to come up with a new look for me that I can use for Holiday events and parties. He made it simple yet classy – with a modern day twist on the classic Marilyn Monroe make up.

I love the winged cat eyes and lashes along with the fresh, not over-done eye shadow.

Finished with the pouty red lips it is a Holiday Makeup masterpiece.

The great thing about this look is that it can be recreated using whatever makeup you have already. The only essential item is the red lipstick.

The look of the cats eyes winged liner can be done using a regular kohl eyeliner pencil, but it is a little easier to work with if you have a liquid eyeliner pen – there are many different options and at Sephora they range in price from Sephora’s own brand at $14 to Guerlain at $40.

The Holidays are a great time to try a fresh new makeup look.

Stay tuned this week for pictures from the start to finish of this makeover…
