Femininity in Denim

Everybody is born stylish. Then we start wanting to look like other people!

Where do you think femininity comes from?  Is it something you wear?  How you dress?  Your makeup?  Or just simply how you feel about yourself?

I have talked about femininity before and one of the key notes that I always come back to is that femininity is absolutely tied to how you feel about yourself  Femininity is in fact a feeling that is transferred from you to whoever you are around.  I know that no matter what it is that I am wearing if I feel amazingly confident and happy with myself that is what I project.  Now, if I am wearing something that makes me feel better about myself because I’ve looked in the mirror and really like what I see, then I am more likely to feel feminine or classy – and here’s the absolute best part, it is a strength and power if we learn how to harness it.

So, with that being said, is it possible to feel really feminine when you are dressed more casually say in jeans or something completely casual?  I say absolutely YES!  For me, when I find a fantastic pair of jeans that fits my curves, that are comfortable and also that look amazing, I am going add a fabulous top and make that whole outfit just rock! By adding a nice blouse like I am wearing in this post, it dresses up the jeans a little more, but still has a casual, fun vibe.

I am always open to trying new styles and stores, so when I was sent this pair of jeans from Dress Barn and they even offered to customize them for me, I jumped at the chance to give them a try.  Here is my honest feedback and review on what I liked about them…

  1. I have been loving the boot cut style (bringing it back again) because they are different from what a lot of other people are wearing.
  2. The denim fabric is really soft, stretchy and comfortable, which means that even if you’re not a fan of regular denim that can sometimes be harsh on the skin and not very flexible for sitting, you will love how these jeans feel.
  3. They are very affordable, which means that you don’t have to limit yourself to just one pair that you might have to if you were buying some of the more expensive designer jeans.
  4. They have a variety of different cuts and colors, so you can find exactly the style and color that works best for you – all with the same great fit that accentuates all your greatest features.
  5. Even though they are boot cut they are fitted, and they allow me to feel sexy, feminine and dress them up or down depending on what I am doing.  I recently wore them when I was traveling with a pair of mid heel booties, and they were perfect. Just the right amount of stretch and comfort for long periods of sitting.

No matter where you decide to get your jeans from, make sure that they are comfortable. There is nothing worse than a pair of jeans that makes you look great but you can hardly breathe and you couldn’t even entertain the idea of eating at all. For summer there are so many more jean & denim options, so have fun. Try some, wear them with a nice blouse, add some cool shoes, dress them up or down and see how you feel. When you exude femininity, which is ultimately where real femininity comes from, what you’re wearing will never take away from that. So I do believe that you can absolutely feel and look amazingly feminine when you are dressed casually and in jeans!

Have you ever had a day when you have woken up and you don’t feel great, for some reason you have a lack of energy, and you just don’t want to dress up at all.  I usually have about one day every other week where I experience a little demotivation around putting forth an effort on my appearance, or I just don’t care.   I have found that on those days, when I really push myself to make an effort, at some point during the day my mood starts to match my effort.  I have always felt like as Women we should use our outfits to express how we feel about ourselves, and sometimes to help us feel on the inside how we look on the outside.

You’ll have to let me know if this has ever worked for you like it does for me!

Casual doesn’t mean not dressing up!

When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else!

I am still learning this concept. For the longest time I had the notion that in order to dress casual it meant that I couldn’t dress up. And since I LOVE to dress up, I would very often have a hard time styling my casual outfits!

I am learning more and more every day, in fact, I would say that I am even starting top feel comfortable dressing down a little more than I ever have. I think for me the biggest challenge was that in corporate America I had to dress for business every day, and even on Friday’s it was a rule that we couldn’t wear jeans. That doesn’t mean I didn’t break the rule and wear different colors of jeans, jackets & skirts, but it definitely limited my creativity. Now I don’t have the same restrictions so I am starting to grow and have even more fun with my casual style.

Denim is such a versatile fabric, but I think it had a bad reputation for so long. I used to argue with my bosses that I would spend more money on my jeans than my business clothes, but somehow it didn’t change anything. I think the reason was that for most people, wearing jeans meant that they were in their “scruffs” and they would REALLY dress down the outfit to the point of just looking sloppy. Of course that wasn’t the norm, but it was what everyone seemed to remember unfortunately!

Hence, today’s post about denim…about how versatile, classy and professional it can still be!

Of course, I am not saying that anyone should not follow the guidelines of where they work, but what I mean is that if you have any leeway or any other times you can put together some denim outfits, then why not have fun with it 😉

Denim

Chambray – this is probably one of my favorite fabrics right now. It’s denim, but much softer. It is also not typical and could probably allow you to sneak by undetected in a company that has a rule of no jeans. It is feminine, it flows, and most importantly, it is cool for summer days whereas regular denim really isn’t!

Denim jacket – everyone needs one! Whether you are wearing it just to carry for those nights when you’re not quite sure how the weather will be, or you’re looking to dress down a more formal look…a denim jacket is such a versatile piece that I always recommend everyone has at least one (and I say at least one, because there are so many styles, that I would feel a little unprepared if I didn’t have a few different ones 😉 )

Denim skirt – especially one with a sexy slit is something that can be worn, look classy as well as a little sassy. I love a fitted denim skirt but there are so many styles out there, that there is one that will suit your body type and confidence level! Choose the style that best fits your unique style and dress it up with a nice blouse and some heels, or go for a more casual look with some summer wedge sandals and a T shirt!

Denim on Denim

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail!

I have to admit wearing denim on denim like I am in this post is not something I have done a lot of, but I wanted to experiment, so I wanted to share.

I always had some preconceived notions that it had to look a certain way, that only certain people could pull it off, and that it always had to be a contrasting denim…what I found is that I actually loved it and I will more than likely do a lot more of it!

As we all know there are so many rules when it comes to fashion (at least how fashion used to be), but I am here to remind you that those rules are really just GUIDELINES and you can adapt them to yourself.

Before I moved over to the U.S. from England I didn’t wear a lot of denim, I considered it a lot more casual than I liked so I shied away from it. Since I have been over here, I have found that I love it for all occasions. The best thing is that it can be dressed up or down and I can create any look I want. When I used to work in Corporate America there were rules for dress, and at one point we used to be “allowed” to wear jeans on Fridays until Casual Friday’s were taken away because they started to become a little too casual. I couldn’t understand it for a while because the jeans I was wearing actually cost more than a lot of my business clothes, and I always dressed them appropriately, but nevertheless it perpetuated that thought process in me that caused me to believe that jeans were TOO casual.

I honestly do believe that jeans or denim of any time can look just as professional, if not more when done correctly, than any business wear. It is also a fabric that is highly adaptable, versatile and fun…so experimenting is always fun! So, here are some quick and easy steps to styling your denim that will work for anyone:

  1. Add a statement piece – this is exactly what I did with my super funky jacket that my mum customized for me. The Black sleeves really break up the look and make it much more eye catching. Adding really cool accessories can work too.
  2. Steer clear of adding a denim handbag, scarf or shoes…it can be just a little too much for a denim on denim outfit.
  3. Make sure that the shade of denim you choose flatters your body type – the darker the denim the more flattering it is. If you are really craving a lighter shade, then make sure that the cut is only hitting you where you want it to.
  4. Adding a loose, flouncy denim like chambray is a great way to create a more feminine vibe.
  5. Try not to look too “matchy” – wearing the exact same shade on the top or bottom, with nothing to break it up, can just look like you’re trying to hard to get that perfect match.

Layering in Style

“I am slowly peeling off the many layers of me to find myself!”

It’s been really hot in Utah over the past few weeks, so it may not feel like it now, but at some point you are going to need some stylish layering options…

I am highlighting a couple that I used in recent shoots…these are some of my favorites, with the Leather jacket always taking the prize 🙂

What is your “go to” layering piece for cooler evenings, or as you start planning for colder days.  I always have to carry something with me when I fly as well, because for some reason I always manage to sit next to someone that wants the air at 50 degrees as I am sitting there shivering!

I posted a couple of great items that are part of the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, and it included a couple of jackets, but I went in and found a few more that you can check out…shop the links below!

A pop of Yellow

“Confidence is the ability to feel beautiful without needing someone to tell you!”

Summer is the time for Bold colors and confidence!  I almost feel a little more free to try new things, especially when it comes to something that really stands out and is noticeable.  I love this blouse that is the color of sunshine, it just put me in a really happy mood.  It’s funny how colors and what we wear can do that.

I found this blouse on one of my new favorite sites – Shein and I love it (click here to shop their site).  It is pretty lightweight, so even though it has longer sleeves, it is still something that I can wear on a warmer day.  Yellow is also a color that works really well with denim amongst other things.  I paired it with a pair of tortoiseshell shades because it is a warmer color it works with earth tones really well.  Other accessories are also Brown/metallic earth tones – a Michael Kors watch along with some earrings that I found at World Market.

Yellow is a color that brings out the glow of your skin – even more so when you have a tan!  I love how the Green leaves really contrast the Blue of the denim and the Yellow of the blouse…I really feel like Erin www.erinwynessphotography.com) captured some great shots here!

Bold Colors with Denim

“Bright colors make you smile- and who doesn’t want to smile a little more these days?”

A denim jacket is never a bad idea, especially when you pair it with something bold and bright.  I love the color of this Green dress…it is a perfect summer color!  The outfit is finished off with the great denim shoes I highlighted in my last post, and I love the effect.

I have been surprised to see that many people stick with traditional colors when styling with denim so I wanted to show you it’s OK to be a little “out there”…it’s OK to just be bold!

The great thing about a dress like this is that it is just like wearing an over sized T-shirt – it is just that comfortable because it is made of the same fabric as T-shirts.  It is a great fabric for warmer days because it is not prone to getting really wrinkled from sitting too much.

There are so many different colors that work in the spring/summer because it’s easier to get away with brighter during those seasons.  I love it – because it gives me the opportunity to try new things, wear outfits that really stand out and just basically explore my own unique take on style.

Some colors look better on me than others, and that is the same with everyone…so be careful as you explore new colors and patterns that they work with your skin tone and coloring.  A good indicator is to check yourself in the mirror and see if your skin looks bright or dull.

Denim is not just for Jeans

“You don’t have time to be timid, you must be bold and daring!”

There are so many different ways to wear denim and I have shown a few of them over the past few weeks…

Today’s post is dedicated to wearing denim shoes, which I think is a great way to add something unique to your outfit.  Denim was once only for jeans, but over the years we have seen many additions to that with shirts, skirts, jackets and now even shoes.

The shoes is in this post are a pair I bought last summer from Nine West, but I have pulled a few similar ones that you can check out for yourself in the links below.  I like them because they work with so many different outfit options.  You could create an outfit contrast with White jeans, a business suit, a casual dress or skirt or even with some distressed denim jeans.  If you do decide to wear them with other denim pieces, try not to match the color too closely – it is better to have different shades of denim (light, White, dark, or distressed) then look like you are trying to “match” your shoes to your outfit.

Stay tuned tomorrow for more on the outfit I put together, but in the meantime, shop some of my denim shoe picks below…

Joggers…

“The hardest step she ever took was to blindly believe in who she was!”

When joggers first came on the market I immediately went out and bought a pair in satin, because I fell in love with how they fit.  One thing I love about them is that they are versatile, so they are perfect for casual outfits, or can be dressed up for a more formal look.

Today’s outfit is a more casual styling with the denim top and leather detailed jacket.  If you are looking for a style of pants to compliment your body type, joggers are great because they are looser around the hips so they can hide problem areas.   The ones I am wearing are tailored and fitted around the waist, but I also own others that are elasticated and therefore work with more body types.

I styled mine with a box cut denim top, Black leather booties and a great jacket.  The day of this shoot was a little windy, so the jacket was absolutely necessary.  Spring time can be so unpredictable that it is always handy to have a jacket whether you need it or not (you just never know!)

I am headed to NY for a shopping trip with a friend this weekend, so I am hoping to find some amazing style picks – stay tuned for great posts to come 🙂

Planning your Outfit…

“A girl knows her limits, but a wise girls knows she has none!”

Today’s outfit shows the versatility of denim.  I love finding different ways to wear denim – in fact, I actually have a business suit that is made of denim fabric and it looks fabulous.   These denim culottes are comfortable, classy, stylish and unique.  When you think of denim it is not very often that people think of culottes, and that is why I like them.  Spring and summer are great times to add some denim into your closet…

Over the years I have developed a plan that helps me put together my outfits.  If you are a “fly by the seat of your pants” kind of girl…then you need to read this:

  • I have always been a planner when it comes to what I am going to wear for an occasion, but what about when the weekend flys by and before you know it Monday is here and you have no idea what you are going to wear?  There are definitely occasions where this could happen, which is why I like to take about 5 minutes at night picking out what I am going to wear the following day.  I partly do this because I would much rather have 5 more minutes in bed than pick out an outfit in the morning, but also because I think much more clearly than when I am having to creep around inside my closet because Brandon is still sleeping 🙂  Choosing what you are going to wear is a very important decision, so planning is absolutely necessary unless you are never in a hurry or don’t ever have anywhere important to go!
  • Another important consideration when putting together an outfit is where you are going and who you will be seeing.  If you are on the fence about whether you should wear something casual or dressy, it is better to err on the side of caution and dress up a little more.  You are less likely to draw attention to yourself as being overdressed than you are if you are under-dressed.
  • Invest in some basics or staples that fit you really well.  You can build an outfit using these and it will always look put togehter because of the time and consideration you have put into buying quality basics that work for your body type.  For example, if you have a great fitting pair of jeans you can add just about anything to that outfit and it will look amazing…\
  • Always have at least one item that really stands out.  Whether it is a great purse or bag that makes people notice, or a pair of shoes that cause stares, every woman should have that one piece that draws attention!

If you implement even just one of these ideas, you will notice that your style choices and outfits will come together much more smoothly.  I’m not saying that you need to spend hours considering what you are going to wear the next day, but believe me when I tell you that people notice when someone has taken the time to choose their outfit versus someone who just threw it together.  Question is, how do you want to be remembered?  I know my answer…

When things aren’t quite Perfect…

“You are imperfect.  Permanently and inevitably flawed and you are beautiful!”

One thing that I have really been working on is the ability to not expect perfection.  I have always been a person that puts extremely high expectations on myself and because of that I tend to expect the same of others.  The problem with that is that sometimes I don’t get the results that I want and I become frustrated and angry.

As you can imagine this can cause problems in relationships, in business and with my kids…so, with that being said, it is a constant battle that I am working on improving.  Today I posted a video on Facebook and Instagram talking about something one of my boys noticed about me, and guess what, I am OK with the fact that I am not perfect.  I am clearly OK with laughing at myself about it and working on improving rather than worrying about what others think, just making a shift internally! 🙂

As I did the shoot that I am featuring today, the wind was blowing, I had my eyes closed in some of the pictures, but I am posting one anyway…

I very often scrutinize my pictures and make sure that I pick the very best ones, so that when I post on social media and on my blog, that I look the best I can. Now I realize that is not reality so just for fun, I included a picture with my eyes closed where I am far from perfect. As the wind is blowing my hair is blowing all different directions, but it doesn’t change how great I feel about myself and how successful I am!

The video even did not make me look the best I have, but I have a commitment that I am overcoming these things that could hold me back, and when I come out the other side, I may not be as polished as I could be, but I will be REAL!

We all have beliefs and thoughts that hold us back, but I promise you if you choose to face them, your life will be fuller and you will feel better about yourself.

It’s almost the end of the week and I feel great because I know I am be authentic and making my life better 🙂
