Laughter – the Best Medicine

Always find a reason to laugh. It may not add years to your life but it will definitely add life to your years!

Something that has always been apparent in my life is the need for me to laugh. I like to think of myself as quick witted, because I love to say things a little off the cuff to make others laugh too. I’ll tell you why…I have always loved laughing and find greater connections with others when I feel that they have the same sense of humor as me or are equally as “strange” 😉

When I first came to the US from England and I was newly married I found myself sometimes getting offended or hurt by things Brandon or others might say. I was brought up so much more reserved, I was taught that sometimes saying something to someone wasn’t necessary. Not that I have ever had a problem giving people a piece of my mind…I just was taught that it was so much more important to be polite over “just being honest”.

My family was one that always laughed and made fun of each other, but somehow we just knew that it was a joke and a little cheeky. It’s weird that even though I had been brought up that way and my family and I had done that, when Brandon particularly said things it made me feel a little self conscious and sensitive. The good thing about having a mindset coach for a husband is that he is ALWAYS willing to talk things through and somehow we just figure out a way to make it work.

Over the years I have learned that I need to not take myself so seriously, and I have actually learned to laugh at myself. Being a work in progress is nothing to be ashamed of, in fact, it’s absolutely vital. I do still get called the “fun sponge” but more often than not I try new things, I don’t mind if I screw up and make a fool of myself, but most importantly I work on not letting ideas be more important than people.

One thing I look forward to in 2019 is the opportunity to smile more, have more fun, create even more connections and love my life even more.

Laughter truly is something that makes every situation more enjoyable…in fact, when we create experiences that involve laughter and smiling they are always more memorable. Even if you don’t remember exactly what you were laughing about, remembering the feeling you had and the experience of connecting with those you love is felt throughout our bodies FOREVER. I can still remember the feeling I had when I was around my Grandad Ron…he always made us all laugh because he was quick witted and funny. His saying that still brings a smile to my face was “Happen she/he wasn’t thinking” – he would say that whenever someone would do something that was an accident or not intentional.

Because smiling and laughter is contagious in our house when someone gets started on a good laughing fit, there are always going to be others that join in at some point. My kids tease me that when I really laugh, not only do I cry but also my right eye closes and they say I look like a pirate. I’m totally OK with it, especially because at the very moment that I know my eye is closing, I am having the time of my life. Who knows, I may even capture a picture of me with the eye closed mid-laughter at some point soon.

If you don’t resolve to do anything else for 2019, decide to add a little more smiling and laughter into your life and see what happens. I bet you won’t be able to say you’re not having fun!

It’s all in the Smile

 

“Light up the night wild one, your smile is going to change someone’s life!”

Does it seem sometimes that life is too serious, and that there should be a time when we can just let it go, be ourselves and smile?  I have always loved to smile, but I am not one that can fake something easily, so just know this, when I smile, it’s because I really mean it.  It’s usually because I have had a funny thought, I see someone or something that I like, or just because the happy energy I feel inside is a little too much to be contained.  Whatever it is that makes you smile, here are a few things to consider that may make you want to smile more…

1. Smiling is contagious – when you see someone smile it is almost impossible to stop yourself from smiling, because our body’s mirror neurons copy what they’re doing!  If you want to see more smiles, you have to give more smile!
2.  If you’re feeling sad, forcing yourself to smile can actually improve your mood by increasing your body’s endorphins – you’ve heard the expression “fake it until you feel it”…well, in the case of a smile, it actually works!
3.  If you smile a smile that’s big enough to make your eyes squint, you boost your immune system, which in turn decreases the cortisol in your body, which can create a number of side effects you don’t want or need!
4.  It can reduce your blood pressure – you know those endorphins that improve your mood, well they also reduce your blood pressure.
5.  Smiling can actually make you look prettier – I don’t know about you but I’ll take as much help as I can in this department!
6.  It’s actually easier to smile than frown…meaning that you’re using less muscles, reducing the likelihood of having extra wrinkles.
7.  People who smile are more likely to be promoted – it demonstrates that you are happy, eager to work with and engaged, and that’s what employers love to see.

 

 

I can tell you that there have been times in my life where someone has smiled at me when I was feeling down and that smile was enough to lift me up.  Even if you don’t buy into any of this, what if you could be the person that someone else might need to see smiling?  What if you could be there for someone else that really needs you?

Without a doubt the happiest times in my life are those times when I wasn’t self-absorbed or just focused on myself, or when I took it a step further and actually focused on being there for someone else.  So, what if all you need to do is smile at someone and that is enough to change their perception about something? That’s not counting all the benefits you’ll receive…would that be worth it to you?

We have seen so many people in the media (like Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain) who had the perception of being happy, or at least fulfilled in their lives.  We would see them and think that they had the perfect life or that everything was great with them.  It just shows that we don’t really know what is going on with another individual or how they are feeling.  Sometimes people can be in the depths of despair without anyone having an inkling…

Things aren’t always going to be great, our lives are never going to be perfect, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make them that way. There is always someone that can be there for you – there is someone that you can be there for…

Choose to spread a little light and receive light if that’s what you need.

What makes you Unique

“Worry about loving yourself instead of worrying about the idea of other people loving you!”

If you’ve read any of my previous posts or seen me on Facebook or Instagram, you know that I talk about being unique all the time.  So I wanted to elaborate a little on what I meant.  Even since I was a little girl, being different, unique, standing out, not following the crowd and not being afraid to be myself has been something I have constantly strived for.

I realize that we all come to this earth with different talents, we look different, we have different priorities and consider some things more important than others.  I have very strong opinions, which I don’t apologize for, but I am also a very open and nonjudgemental person!  I recently did a little survey with some of my closest friends and family, I asked them to give me some adjectives that they thought best described me, to tell me what was their favorite trait of mine, what they thought I could improve on, and how they would describe my style.  I have to admit I was little nervous to get the feedback but I absolutely loved EVERYTHING that was said (even the things I could improve on, which I honestly already knew 🙂 )

So…here are a just a few highlights of what was said:

Adjectives used to describe me:  Tenacious, happy, optimistic, spicy, vivacious, direct, strong, ambitious, smart, confident, vulnerable, decisive, professional, urban, sexy, adaptable, reliable, complex, transparent and interesting!

The things I need to work on are:  patience, bluntness, and to believe in myself.

This is just a snippet of what was said, and I have to say that it made me want to be better but at the same time made me realize that I picked the friends I have for a reason 🙂

So, with all that being said, what is it that makes you unique.  We are all so different, what makes you, YOU?  The best relationships I have in my life, the greatest friendships and the ones that span the Ocean and all time, are the ones where I am spending time with someone that is not afraid to be themselves and it 100% secure in who they are.  I have met many people that don’t have as much confidence in themselves that they should.  I do love strong people, but those people come in all shapes and sizes.  I am strong in some ways and I have friends that aspire to be like because they are strong in other ways.  I think this life is all about us lifting up those around us and making them better.  If we are not worrying about what others think of us, and just being US, then we are able to be a true friend, wife, husband or partner!

I feel so happy and blessed to have the life I have chosen, because I know I have chosen the path I am on.  Even small decisions we make lead us onto a path and can totally change the course of our lives…

So, I ask you, what makes you unique?  If you were to ask those around you what they love the most about you, how they would describe you and what they think you could improve on, would you be surprised?  I talk a lot about style and presentation of yourself, but before you even get to that, you need to exude a certain power and that power comes from within you, seeing yourself as the unique, amazing person that you are.

I wanted to start off this Monday with a positive thought…as I think positive thoughts, I become more positive.  I hope it does the same for you too!

Make sure you Glow!

“If you want to give light to others, you have to glow yourself!”

What do you do in your life to make sure that you glow?  Are you a believer in the fact that how you treat your body manifests itself?

Today I am focusing on the power of positive energy and how that can truly affect every aspect of your life.  Last night I had a conversation with one of my boys about schoolwork (I don’t know if you’ve had one of those conversations before).  It took me back to the days when I sat down struggling trying to figure out math and how that would be relevant in my life and understand the logic behind each problem. As I sat there speaking with him I realized that the schoolwork he was focusing on was providing him great grades and the assignments and homework that he was neglecting to do, was causing him problems. I asked him why he was not paying attention to his math and he said that it was because he found reading and Language Arts easier so that is what he chose to focus on. Makes sense? I know I certainly sometimes choose the easy things before the hard things and then sometimes things fall by the wayside.

The result of this conversation was that we talked about him not saying “he wasn’t good at math” but rather that he was good at math. Now, the logic behind our conversation was that because he was telling himself that he was good at something he was in fact good at that thing, so the easiest way to change the fact that he was struggling with his math was to tell himself that he was good at it.

I truly believe that physics makes up a lot of what happens in our lives – we say we are a healthy person and we are in fact that person. This can be true about anything we want to have manifest in our lives…One thing to be careful of is that you will still require action, but definitely the power of your mind and the energy that it brings when you focus on something is a real power.

That is why I am posting today about “glowing”…as you can see from this post I am drinking a juice from a local natural juice bar, and this is just a start to how you can make yourself healthy. With the choices we have out there about what to eat and how to live our lives, if we make the small good choices (like this juice), which are actually rather good, then the bigger choices become easier.

I believe that as you come be more healthy and happy, that shows in your confidence and demeanor. If you take just a pause before you make a choice about anything in life (eating, exercising, dressing nicely, etc.) then very often you make a different choice than in if you rush into it or try to talk yourself out of or into it. I am certainly not the most healthy person out there, but I notice when I make good health choices it affects my energy level, my ability to problem solve and my motivation…who couldn’t use a little more of those things?
