Be You – Be Different

“Being different isn’t a bad thing, it means you are brave enough to be yourself!”

There are so many things that make us different from everyone else, but we live in a world where it’s almost frowned upon to be different. The sad thing about that is that there are so many reasons that the world needs YOU just as you are, not someone trying to fit in or be like everyone else.

Being different, standing out, expressing yourself just as you are, that takes real courage…but most importantly it means YOU have to know who YOU are!

I don’t know if any of you remember that movie “Runaway Bride”? In that movie Julia Roberts was engaged at least 3 or 4 times and each time literally ran away from the wedding as the groom was standing on the altar. Nobody knew why she did it for a long time, in fact, she gained a reputation and it was newsworthy enough that a reporter went to her small town to write about it. Turns out that what she actually did was fit into a mold of exactly what she thought each of the grooms wanted her to be. Whatever eggs they liked, she liked too. In summary, she pretty much didn’t show up to any of the relationships as herself, and when the reality hit (on the wedding day) she couldn’t go through with it.

I have seen this so much in life, it’s so easy to fall into line with what we think everyone else wants us to be, so much so that we give up who we really are. The problem with that is that the real us is still inside just stuffed down somewhere out of sight, and it means that we can’t ever find complete fulfillment or happiness until we let her or him out!

I have always been a very strong person, but there have definitely been times in my life when I have been afraid to let people see who I really am – specifically in relationships for fear that they wouldn’t love me, or they would leave. I am not the type of person that can live like that, so at some point, usually when I couldn’t take it anymore, I would explode and pretty much blow the relationship anyway. Even with Brandon and I it took me a long time to realize that it was OK to be 100% myself.

I have learned that I don’t need permission to express myself, it doesn’t matter to me if everyone loves everything about me, because I have found that the more authentic and real I am, the more people love being around me anyway.

I love to express my feisty personality through my style, and I have found that the more I love me, the more I love who I am, the more happy I am. My style is uniquely me – and I will always keep it that way! In fact, the jacket that I’m wearing in this post is one that I had customized for me…I saw something similar on Pinterest and had my mum knit it and create my one exactly how I wanted it! What’s better than that?

Being unique is one thing that we all have in common, and it’s exactly what the world needs!

If you could do one thing today that you have been afraid to do, what would it be?

Release your Inner Power

“I’m street, so look both ways before you cross me!”

I had to post today’s quote because it reminds me that I have that whole other level inside me that kicks in when I really want to accomplish something.

Do you know what I mean when I say that? Do you have that smolder inside you that lies dormant until someone tells you that you can’t do something or tries to stop you from achieving your goals.  I didn’t realize how strong mine was until I really sat and thought about what I wanted to be when I grow up.  I know, seems kind of crazy, but you could call it mid-life crisis or just a heightened awareness, but I definitely reached the point in my life where I didn’t feel fulfilled or happy with what I was doing.

I am sure some of you can relate to this in some way.  Is there an area of your life where you are not feeling fulfilled?  It could be your job, it could be your home life, it could be school…there are many ways to feel unfulfilled.  So what do you do when you find yourself in this place?  The simple answer is to change it…but that’s not always feasible.

I found myself in this place a few years ago, so I knew that I had to make a change.  I had to decide if I would be happy if I was in the same place in a year or even 10 years.  Obviously my answer was no, so that’s when I knew that I had to think about what I did want to be doing.  It took me some time to ponder this question, months even, but when I came to the realization that it was important to me to help people, I knew what I had to do.

That’s when I called on that inner gangster & determination that I knew was inside me because I had used it many times before.  The easy part is knowing what you want to do, the hard part comes when you have to slog away day after day, being consistent, undeterred and motivated (even when you don’t feel like it).  This is when the grit comes in. That part inside you that doesn’t doubt you can put in the work necessary to get it done.

One of Brandon’s favorite shows is Shark Tank, and recently I have been watching it with him.  I have found it so interesting to see these people that literally started with nothing, come up with an idea and grow that idea sufficiently that they are qualified to make it onto a show on TV.  I love seeing their belief in what they are doing, I love seeing them overcome fear day after day – because that’s what I know I must do.  It helps me know that I’m not alone, and that the only way anything happens in this world is if we believe enough in it and in ourselves to make it happen.

So what if, inside you, there is this inner bad girl with grit just waiting to help you accomplish your dreams?  What if I told you that it is there – you just need to find a way to harness it.  It’s no that it’s easier for some than others, it’s just that some will do whatever it takes to make it happen – they believe that much in themselves.

I may be that girl that eats organic foods, believes in the environment, believes that people and their feelings are more important than ideas, but I still love to listen to rap music.  I still love to be walking the line of conformity, because I know that when I am open, loving and real, that’s when I am able to feel love and fulfillment in my life.

Sometimes I feel the need to show the outside world that I am not just a pretty face, but I have an attitude and I’m not afraid to use it…that’s why I chose today’s more casual, get stuff done, inner bad girl look 😉

A Woman Empowered…

“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within!”

Whether you know me personally or if you know me from reading my blog, Instagram, Facebook or Twitter posts, you probably already know by now that I am a very focused and driven woman.  I march to the beat of my own drum, I like to get my own way (and I don’t mean the kind of person that stomps their feet if they don’t get their own way, but someone that busts her butt until things work out how I want them or at least close to!), I make a goal and whether I get to that goal in a direct route or if I have to take a few detours, I ALWAYS get there!

A lot of you may or may not know what being a blogger entails.  Here’s how my life looks and how I am learning along the way…

  1. I am a mother of 4 amazing boys that bring me a lot of joy but also require that even when I’m home I’m “on my game!”
  2. I support all my boys in their sports and other activities, and show up to all their performances, games and events not because I HAVE to but because I wouldn’t miss them for the world.
  3. I work full time in a Sales Organization and have been a top performer for around 15 years, and it is a very demanding, self motivated and stressful career.
  4. I maintain friendships and relationships with people that are important to me, and they are most definitely a priority in my life.
  5. I am happily married and work on my relationship with my husband all the time (because let’s face it, in real life, marriage is hard but also soooo worth it!)
  6. I write a minimum of 5 blog posts each week, promote them through social media, and learn new ways to grow my following and provide value to people that are interested in what I have to say.
  7. I face daily challenges and obstacles that while they have helped me grow, I am determined to not them define me!

I know that my no means am I alone in what I have going on in my life, and I am certainly not super-human, but what I can tell you is that no matter what I do, I always give it 100%.  I love being successful and I am such a determined and motivated person that knows I am in control of my own life and that nothing or nobody else can decide how successful, happy and peaceful my life is!  I constantly strive to improve myself, and most importantly to not take myself too seriously.

There are definitely things I wish I would have known in advance about writing a blog, and about social media, and of course I am still learning a lot of that stuff.  I didn’t even realize the things I didn’t know until I got in and started doing it, but here’s the key…even when I found out that I didn’t know a lot of stuff, I didn’t let it deter me, I just kept, trying new directions, shifting focus and most importantly…I DIDN’T STOP!!  Here’s my thought about anything in life – if you want it badly enough, you just find a way to get it done.  You don’t let setbacks, challenges, disappointments or other people prevent you from achieving your dream…

When I started my blog I started it with the plan to make it not just about fashion and style but more about helping other Women in particular see the value that comes from having confidence in themselves that can come from feeling good about how they look.  I definitely write about other things too (I see value in many other topics) but there is definitely an overall theme to what I write that should bring you back to feeling great about who you are…

As my blog has grown, I have definitely learned a lot of things, and I have definitely done some things wrong.  I don’t expect to be perfect, but what I do want to do is be improving and the only way to do that is to keep learning, trying new things and finally, by asking for feedback?  Who of you out there is willing to give me some feedback about if you have found value in what I have been doing and if there are some things you would like to see more of?

Whether you are someone just looking for style tips and ideas, or if you are reading this to find out about how you can boost your confidence and make the most of your appearance and use that to translate it to success, you are in the right place.  I may not wear something every day that has you thinking that you want to rush out and buy it – and that’s the point…I am ME, and you are you!  We all need to be who we are, but sometimes we just need a little inspiration.  There are very few original ideas in this world, but sometimes we don’t hear things or see things until we are ready to use those things.  For example, I have heard advice from people over the years, and it’s not until I am ready to take that advice that I really HEAR it…

Are YOU ready to hear advice or support that may help you?

5 Ideas to Supercharge your Success

“Work hard in silence, let success make the noise!”

There are many, many things that make people successful and they may be different, but there are some that ALL successful people do, and that’s what I want to focus on.  I don’t know about you, but I always get my inspiration by watching what other successful people do, and emulating that.  Have you heard the expression “success leaves clues”…well, here are some “clues” that will help you.

Firstly, let me start by saying that I am not just talking about financial, educational or business success, but also relationship and life success.  There are so many things that I wish I would have known when I was younger, so I want to share some things I know would have really helped me!

Here are my top 5 ideas to help YOU improve your success:

  1. Do more than is asked of you.  This goes for all areas of your life, in a job, in your marriage or relationship or with your kids.  It doesn’t mean letting others off the hook so they don’t pull their weight, but it does mean is that you take pride in your abilities and know what you bring to the table. Don’t be taken advantage of, but definitely do more than people expect.
  2. Know when you stay or when to go!  Never stay in any situation Don’t be afraid to change a job or get out of relationship, even if there is opposition.  Always trust your intuition!
  3. Don’t be afraid of failure.  The most successful people are not afraid of falling down or failing at something because there are always more failures on the road to success.
  4. Successful people always take accountability for themselves or their actions.  They don’t rely on anyone else to get the job done, but they look for solutions.
  5. All successful people are adaptable.  They can quickly change directions when they meet opposition, and they can reinvent themselves at the drop of a hat.

These are just the tip of iceberg, there are so many other actions and ideas that can help direct you more quickly to your success.  I have been looking for reminders to guide me and these are some that I have read before, but needed a reminder.  Repetition of these things will definitely guide me in the direction that I want to go, but ultimately any success comes from me making the decision to take some massive action.

I have many books that talk about attracting success and such things, and while I do believe that it is possible to attract all kinds of things to you, it is also true that it still requires action.  We still need to do something about it…what good does it do to sit and think that you hate your job or your relationship and then take no action to resolve it.  I have been in many situations in my life where I have not been happy, and the first step to changing that is to recognize that you are not happy or satisfied.  Once you realize that, the next step to decide to do something about it. You don’t ever see a successful person that is afraid of taking action.

Like I mentioned earlier, success leaves clues and I am watching as many successful people as possible to see how I can learn at least one thing from each of them.  Success is something that is open to your interpretation, and what I mean by that is that your perspective about what is successful is different that mine because it’s based on our life experiences.  My path of choice is not going to be yours, but that doesn’t mean that either is wrong.  One of the traps we can fall into is comparing ourselves to others and that just means we are self-sabotaging or holding ourselves back.

I have a challenge for you this week…find something or somewhere that you would like to improve your success, once you have recognized that thing, find a person that you think has that thing figured out, and watch them or ask questions.  The goal is to learn one thing and add that thing into your daily or weekly action list.  So that the more you do it, the better you become at it and the sooner it becomes a habit.

This week’s goal…identify the area of your life that you want to achieve success and use some of these tips to get you started on that path. If you feel comfortable sharing, I would love to hear more, just comment below…

Make a Lasting Impression

“Be the kind of person that you want to meet!”

No matter who you are, when you meet people, you make an impression on them.

Here’s the good and the bad news…you get to choose what that impression is!  People are going to remember us for something so we may as well make what they remember us for, something positive!  Your appearance is the first thing that people notice, and your appearance can be broken down into many facets.  I don’t think you should dress for someone else, but what I do think you should do is consider your audience or who you are going to be meeting with when you plan an outfit for the day.  I would much rather someone look at me and remember a pair of shoes I was wearing or a dress, that way, I know I am kind of top of their mind.

If any of you are in sales, you will understand that TOMA or Top Of Mind Awareness is something that creates action.  I like it when I have met with someone once, and I follow up with them and they mention something about me that reminded me who I was.  Such as, my English accent, my style, my knowledge on something they are interested in or just a pair of shoes (yes, shoes are just as important if not more important than anything else).

So, the question is, what kind of impression do you want to make?  I know there is so much more to us than what we look like, but nobody is ever going to see anything if all they can think about is what you have trained them to see.  If you are looking to be successful in any aspect of your life – if you’re in business how do you learn success?  I would guess that you learn habits from them, and emulate their behaviors.  How do we learn to cook?  We follow recipes or learn from our parents.  The same can be said about making the right impression – watch and learn from other people that you respect and admire…that’s how you will create the standard for yourself that works!

I know from experience that being memorable helps in many aspects of life…it’s the path I choose the walk!  It shows my boys that I have tenacity, confidence, a great work ethic, class and most importantly that I respect myself!  What path do you want to walk?

Not Fools Gold

“You did not wake up today to be mediocre!”

Success can be viewed in many different ways, but there is one thing that is a common denominator when it comes to success and that is CONFIDENCE.

Having confidence in your abilities, your appearance, your presentation and your passion are all things that are vital to your success.  It is kind of a formula…not everyone is going to feel as confident as others in their abilities or their passion, but they may have confidence in their presentation.  One thing that I have found is that no matter what I am feeling inside, if I dress the part, walk with determination and talk in an educated manner, I am going to see greater results.  Because we are all different, we will have varying confidence percentages of confidence in different areas (yes, I know this sounds like a Math class but I promise it will make sense soon :)).  There are some days that I know I feel and look great and somehow that manages to make me feel more secure in what I am presenting when I meet with clients. Other days, I may have had a rough night with kids (it happens to all of us), or I may just not have as much energy, and those are the days that I know I am not going to have the best results.

I hold myself to extremely high standards so I know when I am not doing everything that I can, and that is in every area of my life.  When I have my game face on, I know I can do anything I really set my mind to!

You may ask yourself what does this have to do with what I’m wearing in this outfit…well, here’s how I’ll bring it back: Being bold enough to wear bright colors and Gold requires a certain level of confidence – not everyone has it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look great and most importantly feel great about yourself.

If you are one of the bold, then there are some amazing styles, colors and metallics out right now that are great for summer, great for those days that you need a “pick me up” and most importantly, great as confidence builders (because when you take the step to wear something bright and bold, it changes how you feel about yourself and how other people view you!

“Dressing is a way of Life.”

Houndstooth is such a classic print, but there are so many different ways to wear it. Today’s skirt is not your traditional pattern  because it is Tan rather than the normal Black and White. Even with the traditional Black and White you can find so many different styles of clothes as well as the size of the print. All of them are wonderful and a great traditionally classic way to style your outfit.

I styled my skirt with a Cream satin blouse and then added a pop of my favorite Red for the shoes. I pulled my hair into a chignon because I was feeling like looking polished and sophisticated.

Here are just a few ideas of how you can wear Houndstooth:

  1. Wear with a jacket or coat, especially we are now in the Fall and layering is a must – it will give you a more trendy, chic look.
  2. Wear a brightly colored piece to make the outfit a little more feminine and girly.
  3. Wear it with denim – that could either be wearing a Houndstooth shirt with jeans or wearing  a skirt/pants with a denim shirt.
  4. Wear a soft, feminine blouse (similar to what I wore today), for a more classic look
  5. Wear a sweater over a button up shirt or blouse – this is going to look more preppy.
  6. Add some leather – wear a cool Houndstooth shirt and layer it with a leather jacket.

There are just a few ideas of how you can create your own style with Houndstooth – the key is to be open to trying new things, and not just look at the traditional styling of the pattern and thinking that it wouldn’t work for you. The same can be said for most patterns – is almost all situations you can find a way to wear any pattern to make it suit your style by following similar steps to the ones listed above.

“Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live.”

There are so many definitions for success – for some it could mean being happy in whatever it is that you do.  For others it is tied to income or status, or even it could mean helping others.  Whatever your definition is, there is one thing that is absolutely vital in order to achieve your level of success.  You need to surround yourself and associate with people that think the same way as you do, because when you spend a lot of time with people, you start to emulate their characteristics – so pick the ones that show successful attributes rather than anything negative.

Here are some things that I incorporate into my life and business career:

  1. I have found that the more passionate I am about something the more likely I am to put forth the most amount of effort into making it successful.
  2. I am not afraid to try new things or take risks – it is sometimes easy to talk yourself out of something because it is not comfortable or scary.  You will not always get the results you want, but you certainly won’t grow unless you try new things and take risks.
  3. I have 100% confidence in myself that I will be successful.  If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will believe in you.  It doesn’t mean that every time you are going to get the result immediately that you want, but it does mean that sometimes you take a different path and find success in other ways.
  4. I always make sure that I take care of myself.  I have a busy life with a career, kids and volunteer work, but I always make sure that my cup is always at least partly full because if it isn’t, I can’t be there for anyone else.
  5. Finally, I take my relationships in business  and my personal life very seriously – I am extremely grateful for everyone that I have and make myself available as much as possible to ensure that I continue to foster those relationships!

No matter who you are, you can be successful, it really is just a decision.

Starting my day, I take great care to present myself in the best way possible.  Mornings are hectic in my house as I am sure they are in yours, so taking the time to present yourself in the best way is something that can be neglected or at least not a priority.  I don’t think that I can say this enough – the better you feel about yourself, the better people are going to feel about you.  It doesn’t mean that you have to wear a ton of makeup, dress to the nines every day, but it does mean that you need to feel good about however you look.  Holding your head high when you walk into a room can change the entire dynamic of a situation…

The outfit highlighted today is something I have for sale in My Shop – it is a great pinstripe dress.  It has high side slits – so to make it business appropriate, I wore a little black skirt underneath.

It is hard to tell from a picture, but I love this dress, and I definitely held my head high all day and felt good about myself.
