No matter who you are, when you meet people, you make an impression on them.
Here’s the good and the bad news…you get to choose what that impression is! People are going to remember us for something so we may as well make what they remember us for, something positive! Your appearance is the first thing that people notice, and your appearance can be broken down into many facets. I don’t think you should dress for someone else, but what I do think you should do is consider your audience or who you are going to be meeting with when you plan an outfit for the day. I would much rather someone look at me and remember a pair of shoes I was wearing or a dress, that way, I know I am kind of top of their mind.
If any of you are in sales, you will understand that TOMA or Top Of Mind Awareness is something that creates action. I like it when I have met with someone once, and I follow up with them and they mention something about me that reminded me who I was. Such as, my English accent, my style, my knowledge on something they are interested in or just a pair of shoes (yes, shoes are just as important if not more important than anything else).
So, the question is, what kind of impression do you want to make? I know there is so much more to us than what we look like, but nobody is ever going to see anything if all they can think about is what you have trained them to see. If you are looking to be successful in any aspect of your life – if you’re in business how do you learn success? I would guess that you learn habits from them, and emulate their behaviors. How do we learn to cook? We follow recipes or learn from our parents. The same can be said about making the right impression – watch and learn from other people that you respect and admire…that’s how you will create the standard for yourself that works!
I know from experience that being memorable helps in many aspects of life…it’s the path I choose the walk! It shows my boys that I have tenacity, confidence, a great work ethic, class and most importantly that I respect myself! What path do you want to walk?
