Stand Out – Your Own Way!

“The final forming of a person’s character lies in their hands!”

Style comes from inspiration, experiences, and emotions. And this is what you need to understand and create your own style; it’s important to tap into YOU so it’s an honest and true reflection of yourself. Now you may think that this sounds a lot easier said than done, but it’s just about feeling. Even the simple things like waking up really happy – you may want to add a little sunshine by wearing something yellow, because it’s bright and just like how you’re feeling. Make sense?

Here are some more examples…

A statement by accessorizing

Accessories are so much fun because you can mix and match them, stack them, tie them – and the list goes on. The more creative you are, the more freedom you will have to do whatever you like. For example, if there’s a chiffon scarf that you saw in the store and just had to buy it because it was pretty, you may not have actually thought of how you’re going to wear it. Well, why not turn in into a head tie one day, and a bracelet or wrist wrap the next? Or let’s say you’re feeling very sassy or funky – choose a pair of statement earrings to accentuate that feeling and make you look twice when you see yourself in the mirror. There is nothing better than seeing yourself in the mirror and REALLY appreciating what you see!

Pick the shoes

Shoes, shoes and more shoes. You really can never have enough (I know I can sound like a broken record, but it’s the truth). I love wearing a different pair of shoes each day, and they have to flow with my ever changing emotions too. If one day you’re in a ‘bring it on world’ kind of mood (it happens to all of us) a pair of pointed toe booties for that vibe would be perfect. If you’re feeling a little more feminine, you could try a pair of strappy sandals or pretty colored stilettos.

Another tip to use is to match your whole look – including your hair to the shoe. More casual shoes or boots mean that you can get away with a messy ponytail or bun, whereas a business vibe like the stilettos you would want to wear your hair in a more sleek and smooth style.

The confidence

Confidence is something that comes from inside, from how you feel about yourself, so it’s not something you can just choose to wear. However, you can choose to work on your confidence every day, so that when you walk out your door, you can hold your head high knowing that YOU feel amazing about who you are, and knowing that the rest of the world will follow suit with how YOU feel!

Business like a Boss Lady

She knew the power of her mind, so she programmed it for success!

Just in case you missed my Video Podcast, I wanted to talk a little about Business Style and how it doesn’t have to be boring.

I think this was one of the most important realizations I had when I was working in Corporate America. YES – there are rules, but NO – it doesn’t mean you can’t adapt them and still be business appropriate.

I am a firm believer in that fact that you can look amazing even if you are not in a business suit or the traditional styles of old business. I’m not condoning breaking the dress code at the company you work at, but I have found that dressing appropriately for business doesn’t mean that you can’t still march to the beat of your own drum.

As women we have so much more opportunity to create our own look than men do, so why not take advantage of all the amazing offerings the world of fashion has for us?

Here are a few of my own suggestions and things I did that helped me feel great about my business style:

  • Incorporate bright colors – yes, you can add a bright colored blouse but what about really stepping it up and adding a pair of bright colored pants or a skirt. Red is always my favorite go-to, but there are so many others like green, purple, orange and yellow – or pretty much any color that is bold and stands out! Bold patterns are always find to wear too – like these cute joggers that look professional yet funky!
  • Add a little lace – it is so feminine and looks so professional as well. By adding something lace to your look, you will immediately elevate the look from ordinary to fabulous.
  • You don’t have to stick to traditional fabrics – try adding some leather or velvet. Gone are the days when wearing something less traditional is a bad thing. Leather was once thought to be edgy but now it really can be made to look feminine and classy by wearing a pretty blouse, and some stand out shoes!
  • Don’t forget the details – accessories can be the thing that elevate an otherwise ordinary outfit. By adding some cute jewelry, a scarf or carrying a bag that is fun – you will immediately draw peoples eyes to those pieces. Which means, if your business style is understated, you can make it more sassy and fun by adding some gorgeous accessories. Beware though – in this situation, less is more. Don’t over-do it…keep it classy!
  • You know my philosophy about shoes…well, it applies to business style as well. When you wear a pair of shoes that is colorful, bold or unique that’s what people more often than not will remember. I’ve talked about how someone’s shoes are usually the first thing I notice…well, I can tell you that I am not the only one 😉
  • Business IS all about looking professional – you having a jacket handy is a good thing…but that doesn’t mean that the jacket has to be ordinary. In fact, finding jackets that are unique is always fun for me – like the blazer I’m wearing here with the leather accents. Professional – YES! Unique – YES!

A lot of dressing for business in a way that still expresses your personality is really about changing your mindset. It’s about being open to exploring differentiations and creating your own interpretations of the rules.

None of the pictures I’ve posted are inappropriate business style, but can you agree that they are my unique style? I have found that I am happiest when I am not conforming to the opinions of others, but rather adapting situations to suit my style – but doing it in a way that is still social acceptable and fun! Sounds like a win/win doesn’t it?

What’s New for Spring

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got!

Are you someone that embraces change? Do you like change in any area in your life? For many people change can feel like we are losing control and that loss of control can cause frustration and even fear.

Fashion and style is no exception – I see so many women particularly that are unwilling to try new styles. OK, so I’m not saying that when bootie shorts come out you should rush to the store and buy a pair, because we all have to accept our limitations and know boundaries of what is acceptable…and with me being a 50 year old woman I have no problem admitting that bootie shorts are waaay beyond what is acceptable for me – believe me, I’m doing everyone a favor 😉

However, each season there are new styles that are worth giving a try. I love to check out all the latest new trends, make a mental note of what areas of the body they accentuate, and then decide if they are something I want to try. If they fit in category of hitting areas I want to accentuate and those I would love to avoid (according to my body type), then I will take myself to a store and try a few things on. Well – I don’t actually try things on in stores very often but I will buy things I know will fit me and take them home to try on in front of my own mirror (in my own habitat so to speak).

Wide legged pants have been around, they’ve changed slightly over the years, but they are something that can work for just about any body type. I love them because even though I am 5’5” I feel like to need something to lengthen my legs. They do just that…they can hide a multitude of evils, such as muffin top, large upper legs and a stomach pooch.

They are a great addition to any spring wardrobe, but before you go out looking for your pair, consider this:

  1. Try them on – you can’t judge how they will look on you if you are just seeing them on the hanger.
  2. Steer clear of busy patterns, large pockets or other things that could distract from the pants themselves – you don’t need to add anything unnecessary to this look, the wide pants are enough of a statement.
  3. If you are not tall, wear high or chunky shoes to add even more length to your legs.
  4. Make sure they are not too tight…there is nothing worse than a pair of pants that are supposed to be loose, hitting in the wrong areas and accentuating things that you are actually trying to mask.

Now you should be ready to go shopping and see if you can find a pair that works for you…

I am highlighting a great pair of Palazzo pants that I purchased from Nordstrom Rack. I fell in love with the color. I wore them with a dressy blouse and chunky high heeled booties. Of course, as spring gets closer and I don’t have to worry about walking outside in the snow, I would add a pair of great platform sandals to finish off the look.

I think you will find if you try some of these pants on, you will be really happy with your look.

Love your Life

Be so busy loving your life that you have no time for hate, regret and fear!

OK – so we all know consciously that we only have one life to live and that we need to make the most of it…but I sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in what is NOT great, what’s wrong and the fact that our life may not be looking exactly like our expectation of how it should look.

When you were little did you have an idea of what your life was going to look like? Did you imagine yourself with 2.5 children, the perfect spouse, and a lovely well kept home? I know that I had an idea, or even an expectation, of what my life should look like. I wanted the marriage, the children, the unconditional love, the career, basically the fairytale…but I found out very early on that my life wasn’t going to take that path. I started out WITHOUT a fairytale relationship, became a single mum, moved from England by myself to the U.S. to create a life for myself and Dalton, my son. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pay the bills, I juggled paying the utilities, electricity and gas bills and had one or other of them disconnected at least once. It was a challenge, but I was up for that challenge!

I was so attached to the idea of having that perfect life that at times I felt like a failure. I felt like I wasn’t enough. I felt like my life sucked! Then something happened to make me see things differently. I had some friends that made me start to believe in myself again. Through talking me through what I DID have and make me start appreciating it again, I was able to start believing that I could have the life I wanted. It started with me being more than OK with where I was at that time, in fact, I started to feel that even if I never met anyone and spent the rest of my life with just Dalton – then that was enough for me!

Things didn’t start out ideal or PERFECT, but after a few years, I met Brandon and everything really changed. After a few more kids, we created the family that both Dalton and I had always wanted (although I’m pretty sure Dalton always wanted a sister, but I gave him 3 brothers instead 😉 ) .

Our family life has not always been a bed of roses, but it’s still amazing. Through the personal growth and development business that Brandon started we both grew stronger, happier and more fulfilled…but not without consistent effort, and that’s what I want to talk about today…

Being happy and loving your life when everything is going well is easy to do. It’s finding joy, fulfillment and happiness through the hard times – because there will always be hard times.

So how do you feel happy and fulfilled when all the cards seem to be stacked against you?

I found that the first step was to believe that I deserved to be happy no matter what. I embraced that mindset and a funny thing happened – I actually BECAME happy. My focus was on gratitude for what I DID have instead of what I DID NOT have! It may seem a little hard to believe but I am 100% certain that by appreciating how amazing my life was, focusing on my love for Dalton, my love for myself and my love for being in the U.S…that’s what allowed me to open the door for even greater things.

Are you in a place where you feel down or you’re not finding joy in your life? Does it seem like life is against you?

Life can be a dark place if we focus on dark thoughts, but it can also bring an amazing light into our lives when we focus on beautiful things, on appreciating what we have, what we’re grateful for and feel fulfilled knowing that we ARE ENOUGH.

I just wanted to share a little about what brought me here and why I will always focus on gratitude…

If you’re looking to improve any area of your life, I know with 100% certainty that whatever you focus on you get more of…so why not focus on all that is positive, good and amazing about yourself and this life?

My T shirt is here and my jeans are here…both from Nordstrom (shoes are from my closet).

Being Adaptable for Spring

Adaptation is a profound process. It means you figure out how to thrive in the world!

OK – so we are back to it being winter weather here in Salt Lake, & I thought it would be a great time to talk about how Spring is sometimes that unpredictable time of year where you can’t quite put away your jackets because you have hot days, freezing and snowy days and everything in between – so how do you stop that messing with your style mojo?

I was sitting out on the patio of a local restaurant for lunch on Monday and today I am huddled in my office with my heater blasting watching the snow/rain come down. Here’s the thing, and this has probably been one of the hardest things I have ever done, I am learning to surrender to the fact that I have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL over whether spring looks like it does today or its warm and sunny…

Last night I sat at my son’s High School baseball game with my winter coat, a beanie, gloves and a blanket as the snow came down. For spring baseball weather in Utah things like this have happened before but I hear that this is the worst or hardest baseball season they have had in over 20 years in regard to cancelling/postponing games, bad weather and the field condition…crazy, but NO control over it, right?!

So how do we adapt to not being able to fully transition from one season to the next, because my guess is that in a lot of places in the world, it is very unlikely that as soon as the first day of spring or a new season hits that the weather doesn’t come with it. March 20th was the first day of spring, and we are far removed from that now but still experiencing winter days…

By this time of year I am so ready to start wearing the cute new styles that spring has to offer, but I always keep a few colder weather favorites that allow me to transition into spring gracefully. I don’t think our style needs to have an EITHER / OR mentality. What I mean by that is that wearing some of your favorite colder weather/winter styles WITH some cute new spring looks is actually fabulous.

Yesterday for the baseball game I worse some great chino’s, some low cut booties, a T shirt and leather jacket. I took with me my almost full length winter coat for the baseball game along with the beanie and gloves…so all I did was pop those on when I got to the field. Meaning that I could still be stylish, feel good about my look during the rest of the day and yet still be prepared for that crazy snow! Sometimes having a coat or warmer jacket in your car to throw on if cold weather hits, and I ALWAYS carry an umbrella in my car just in case (I think that’s English Woman in me needing to be prepared for rain at all times 😉 ).

I see a light at the end of the tunnel, the sun is peeking through the clouds and I am ready to take on whatever weather gets thrown my way today!

What transition style could you create for yourself?

Have a fabulous Friday…

Add a little Snake Print to your Life

It takes courage to mix things up and conviction to push a look to its limit. When you do the reward is personality, flair and passion!

My Grandma was one of my style icons, and I loved her because her whole life she expressed herself through her style and didn’t worry about being different. My Grandad worked for a shoe company in England and because of that she had sooo many pairs of shoes, and was always ahead of the trends (maybe this is where I got my love for shoes from). She wore bold fabrics, colors and styles and was one of the first people I ever saw wearing animal print. She knew the power of style and confidently expressed herself in a way that made people sit up and pay attention!

Because she had such a huge impact on my life, I have always wanted to be the same way…try new things and stand out from the crowd.

Snake print or Python print is so huge right now, and I know if my Grandma was still around she would be sporting all the latest looks. It’s not that it is brand new, but I do think it’s a great transitional print that can take us through all the seasons this year. Because it is such an amazing print you are going to see it in most high street stores and online, in a variety of different styles.

Just like no two leopard prints are the same – snake print can come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and styles. I am mixing 2 different colors of snake print in my outfit today, and I love the effect because it just amplifies the look even more. I love the mix of colors and the depth that it brings.

At one point in my life I might have considered it to be a little much to wear 2 different colors of the same print, but what I have found as I get older is that I kind of like coloring outside of the lines…not letting the fear of what others think affect how I dress, what I do and who I am 😉

Another way to wear more than one print is to choose different prints (snake, leopard, zebra etc), mix the patterns but wear them in the same color. It’s OK if you’re not quite there yet…stick to what makes you feel comfortable!

I have linked a few of my favorite snake print pieces below – including the pants I’m wearing

“You cannot climb the ladder of success dressed in the costume of failure!”

I grabbed a pair of amazing leggings that I recently purchased because they fit both criteria.  Leggings are a perfect wardrobe addition (if you pick the right pair) because they are comfortable, they can be flattering and of course don’t forget, you want to find a pair that is stylish.  I have seen lots of people walking around in leggings that are either worn out, the wrong color or fabric for someone’s body type (they show off ever bump and curve) and finally the worst thing I think I have ever seen is a pair of “flesh” colored leggings that looks like someone isn’t wearing any pants at all…definitely not the impression you want to make EVER!

The booties have a perfect heel height for lots of walking, shopping and errand running – which is essential for weekends and holidays.  As I have mentioned before, I like to wear shoes with heels a lot more than not, so when I find a pair of boots or shoes that have heels but are still comfortable, I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot!!

What is your ideal street style?  Do you look for comfort first?  Style first?  Or do you just throw on whatever is closest.  The great thing about style and fashion is that it is ever-changing so you don’t ever have to stick with what you have always done, you can change at any time.

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as WE are!”

What is your personal style definition? There are many different types of personal style how do you identify your fashion style? We have many personal style examples here at Style Queenie!

Don’t get caught up in wearing things that you think you should wear or what you think others might like, dress for yourself, be yourself, love yourself…let that confidence and certainty in yourself shine through in everything that you do.  Which means picking out your outfit is only a small part of that, but it is something that will set the tone for your entire day.  I know for a fact, when I feel like I look amazing, I am going to perform and react a lot better than if I feel uncertain about my outfit or even my hair.

We all have bad hair days, we all have not so great outfit days, that’s why I always have a few outfits that are back-ups, which means that I can fall back on these outfits on days where I know I need to look my best.  It is something that isn’t thought about much, but it is always a great idea to have a few outfits ready to go in your closet just in case you need them!  Choose things that flatter your body, your coloring and boost your confidence.  I have talked in previous posts how certain colors can evoke certain feelings…there are always colors that you are more in tune with than others, I am drawn to Red and when I want to feel really sassy, powerful and confident, that is always the color I am drawn to first.  Do you have a color that makes you feel most confident?  If you do, make sure you have something in that color that is a standby just in case you need it.

Johnny Cash was always known for wearing all Black – during his era people thought it a little strange.  These days it is not so unusual, but still not something that everyone likes to do, and that is totally fine.  Outfits that incorporate all of the same colors, or closely similar colors are becoming more and more popular – I love the idea of wearing all Beige or all White, to me that is classy.

This is just one more way for you to put your unique personal style stamp on what you wear and how you present yourself…have fun on your personal style journey and don’t be afraid to try new things!

Fashion Inspiration

Here to Empower Your Fashion Sense

Don’t underestimate yourself by comparing yourself to others.  It’s our differences that make us unique and beautiful.”

What if I told you that you need to forget everything you already know about style and fashion inspiration.  Not because you are doing anything wrong, but because no matter how great you are at putting together outfits and fashion, it is always fun to “clean house” and go back to basics.  We are your fashion inspiration blog with fashion inspiration themes we are not here to tell you who you are but help you find your own fashion inspiration and personal style.

If you truly want to be different, unique, or stand out, the only way you can do that is by taking risks – and the most important thing to remember is that you will probably have people that don’t like what you are wearing BUT if you feel good, then you have accomplished what you set out to do.  Are you confident enough to create your own unique style.  It is easy to see what someone else is wearing and copy it or try to be just like them – but what takes real confidence is to be you…and not care what anyone else says about it.  Now that doesn’t mean you can’t try to recreate outfits that you see in magazines or see a pair of shoes and want to buy them – because magazines and blogs (just like this one) are there to give you ideas and inspire you!

I honestly believe that we were all created to be unique and that our style has the opportunity to show the world just how unique without us having to do or say anything.  As you go out in your own outfit creation, don’t forget to smile and have fun…the more happy and confident you feel, the more others will feel it too!

“Fashion inspiration should be a form of escapism not a form of imprisonment.”

Have you ever wondered which colors suit you best?  Do you sometimes hesitate to wear certain colors because you think they are too bold?

“If you want to have something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done!”

Wearing a tight skirt with a tunic or dress over the top is actually a really flattering look and appropriate for most occasions. I feel that it looks professional, especially because I didn’t have to worry about pulling down a shorter dress all day long (especially when sitting down).

Wearing short dresses in the summer can be really tempting but beware of wearing something too short for work – it not only conveys the wrong message to people you are meeting, but it also means you are going to be trying to adjust your hem all day long. Even if when you are standing and it’s not too short, it is a good idea to do the sit test and see how the dress or skirt fits you when you are sitting down.

Doing something unexpected is definitely going to be different for everyone – I tend to try things that can be unusual, but that doesn’t mean that you have to. The key is to make sure you don’t come outside your comfort zone, but you can definitely stretch it!
