Style comes from inspiration, experiences, and emotions. And this is what you need to understand and create your own style; it’s important to tap into YOU so it’s an honest and true reflection of yourself. Now you may think that this sounds a lot easier said than done, but it’s just about feeling. Even the simple things like waking up really happy – you may want to add a little sunshine by wearing something yellow, because it’s bright and just like how you’re feeling. Make sense?
Here are some more examples…
A statement by accessorizing
Accessories are so much fun because you can mix and match them, stack them, tie them – and the list goes on. The more creative you are, the more freedom you will have to do whatever you like. For example, if there’s a chiffon scarf that you saw in the store and just had to buy it because it was pretty, you may not have actually thought of how you’re going to wear it. Well, why not turn in into a head tie one day, and a bracelet or wrist wrap the next? Or let’s say you’re feeling very sassy or funky – choose a pair of statement earrings to accentuate that feeling and make you look twice when you see yourself in the mirror. There is nothing better than seeing yourself in the mirror and REALLY appreciating what you see!
Pick the shoes
Shoes, shoes and more shoes. You really can never have enough (I know I can sound like a broken record, but it’s the truth). I love wearing a different pair of shoes each day, and they have to flow with my ever changing emotions too. If one day you’re in a ‘bring it on world’ kind of mood (it happens to all of us) a pair of pointed toe booties for that vibe would be perfect. If you’re feeling a little more feminine, you could try a pair of strappy sandals or pretty colored stilettos.
Another tip to use is to match your whole look – including your hair to the shoe. More casual shoes or boots mean that you can get away with a messy ponytail or bun, whereas a business vibe like the stilettos you would want to wear your hair in a more sleek and smooth style.
Confidence is something that comes from inside, from how you feel about yourself, so it’s not something you can just choose to wear. However, you can choose to work on your confidence every day, so that when you walk out your door, you can hold your head high knowing that YOU feel amazing about who you are, and knowing that the rest of the world will follow suit with how YOU feel!
Just in case you missed my Video Podcast, I wanted to talk a little about Business Style and how it doesn’t have to be boring.
I think this was one of the most important realizations I had when I was working in Corporate America. YES – there are rules, but NO – it doesn’t mean you can’t adapt them and still be business appropriate.
I am a firm believer in that fact that you can look amazing even if you are not in a business suit or the traditional styles of old business. I’m not condoning breaking the dress code at the company you work at, but I have found that dressing appropriately for business doesn’t mean that you can’t still march to the beat of your own drum.
As women we have so much more opportunity to create our own look than men do, so why not take advantage of all the amazing offerings the world of fashion has for us?
Here are a few of my own suggestions and things I did that helped me feel great about my business style:
A lot of dressing for business in a way that still expresses your personality is really about changing your mindset. It’s about being open to exploring differentiations and creating your own interpretations of the rules.
None of the pictures I’ve posted are inappropriate business style, but can you agree that they are my unique style? I have found that I am happiest when I am not conforming to the opinions of others, but rather adapting situations to suit my style – but doing it in a way that is still social acceptable and fun! Sounds like a win/win doesn’t it?
Are you ready to explore your business style?
Are you someone that embraces change? Do you like change in any area in your life? For many people change can feel like we are losing control and that loss of control can cause frustration and even fear.
Fashion and style is no exception – I see so many women particularly that are unwilling to try new styles. OK, so I’m not saying that when bootie shorts come out you should rush to the store and buy a pair, because we all have to accept our limitations and know boundaries of what is acceptable…and with me being a 50 year old woman I have no problem admitting that bootie shorts are waaay beyond what is acceptable for me – believe me, I’m doing everyone a favor 😉
However, each season there are new styles that are worth giving a try. I love to check out all the latest new trends, make a mental note of what areas of the body they accentuate, and then decide if they are something I want to try. If they fit in category of hitting areas I want to accentuate and those I would love to avoid (according to my body type), then I will take myself to a store and try a few things on. Well – I don’t actually try things on in stores very often but I will buy things I know will fit me and take them home to try on in front of my own mirror (in my own habitat so to speak).
Wide legged pants have been around, they’ve changed slightly over the years, but they are something that can work for just about any body type. I love them because even though I am 5’5” I feel like to need something to lengthen my legs. They do just that…they can hide a multitude of evils, such as muffin top, large upper legs and a stomach pooch.
They are a great addition to any spring wardrobe, but before you go out looking for your pair, consider this:
Now you should be ready to go shopping and see if you can find a pair that works for you…
I am highlighting a great pair of Palazzo pants that I purchased from Nordstrom Rack. I fell in love with the color. I wore them with a dressy blouse and chunky high heeled booties. Of course, as spring gets closer and I don’t have to worry about walking outside in the snow, I would add a pair of great platform sandals to finish off the look.
I think you will find if you try some of these pants on, you will be really happy with your look.
OK – so we all know consciously that we only have one life to live and that we need to make the most of it…but I sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in what is NOT great, what’s wrong and the fact that our life may not be looking exactly like our expectation of how it should look.
When you were little did you have an idea of what your life was going to look like? Did you imagine yourself with 2.5 children, the perfect spouse, and a lovely well kept home? I know that I had an idea, or even an expectation, of what my life should look like. I wanted the marriage, the children, the unconditional love, the career, basically the fairytale…but I found out very early on that my life wasn’t going to take that path. I started out WITHOUT a fairytale relationship, became a single mum, moved from England by myself to the U.S. to create a life for myself and Dalton, my son. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pay the bills, I juggled paying the utilities, electricity and gas bills and had one or other of them disconnected at least once. It was a challenge, but I was up for that challenge!
I was so attached to the idea of having that perfect life that at times I felt like a failure. I felt like I wasn’t enough. I felt like my life sucked! Then something happened to make me see things differently. I had some friends that made me start to believe in myself again. Through talking me through what I DID have and make me start appreciating it again, I was able to start believing that I could have the life I wanted. It started with me being more than OK with where I was at that time, in fact, I started to feel that even if I never met anyone and spent the rest of my life with just Dalton – then that was enough for me!
Things didn’t start out ideal or PERFECT, but after a few years, I met Brandon and everything really changed. After a few more kids, we created the family that both Dalton and I had always wanted (although I’m pretty sure Dalton always wanted a sister, but I gave him 3 brothers instead 😉 ) .
Our family life has not always been a bed of roses, but it’s still amazing. Through the personal growth and development business that Brandon started we both grew stronger, happier and more fulfilled…but not without consistent effort, and that’s what I want to talk about today…
Being happy and loving your life when everything is going well is easy to do. It’s finding joy, fulfillment and happiness through the hard times – because there will always be hard times.
So how do you feel happy and fulfilled when all the cards seem to be stacked against you?
I found that the first step was to believe that I deserved to be happy no matter what. I embraced that mindset and a funny thing happened – I actually BECAME happy. My focus was on gratitude for what I DID have instead of what I DID NOT have! It may seem a little hard to believe but I am 100% certain that by appreciating how amazing my life was, focusing on my love for Dalton, my love for myself and my love for being in the U.S…that’s what allowed me to open the door for even greater things.
Are you in a place where you feel down or you’re not finding joy in your life? Does it seem like life is against you?
Life can be a dark place if we focus on dark thoughts, but it can also bring an amazing light into our lives when we focus on beautiful things, on appreciating what we have, what we’re grateful for and feel fulfilled knowing that we ARE ENOUGH.
I just wanted to share a little about what brought me here and why I will always focus on gratitude…
If you’re looking to improve any area of your life, I know with 100% certainty that whatever you focus on you get more of…so why not focus on all that is positive, good and amazing about yourself and this life?
My T shirt is here and my jeans are here…both from Nordstrom (shoes are from my closet).

OK – so we are back to it being winter weather here in Salt Lake, & I thought it would be a great time to talk about how Spring is sometimes that unpredictable time of year where you can’t quite put away your jackets because you have hot days, freezing and snowy days and everything in between – so how do you stop that messing with your style mojo?
I was sitting out on the patio of a local restaurant for lunch on Monday and today I am huddled in my office with my heater blasting watching the snow/rain come down. Here’s the thing, and this has probably been one of the hardest things I have ever done, I am learning to surrender to the fact that I have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL over whether spring looks like it does today or its warm and sunny…
Last night I sat at my son’s High School baseball game with my winter coat, a beanie, gloves and a blanket as the snow came down. For spring baseball weather in Utah things like this have happened before but I hear that this is the worst or hardest baseball season they have had in over 20 years in regard to cancelling/postponing games, bad weather and the field condition…crazy, but NO control over it, right?!
So how do we adapt to not being able to fully transition from one season to the next, because my guess is that in a lot of places in the world, it is very unlikely that as soon as the first day of spring or a new season hits that the weather doesn’t come with it. March 20th was the first day of spring, and we are far removed from that now but still experiencing winter days…
By this time of year I am so ready to start wearing the cute new styles that spring has to offer, but I always keep a few colder weather favorites that allow me to transition into spring gracefully. I don’t think our style needs to have an EITHER / OR mentality. What I mean by that is that wearing some of your favorite colder weather/winter styles WITH some cute new spring looks is actually fabulous.
Yesterday for the baseball game I worse some great chino’s, some low cut booties, a T shirt and leather jacket. I took with me my almost full length winter coat for the baseball game along with the beanie and gloves…so all I did was pop those on when I got to the field. Meaning that I could still be stylish, feel good about my look during the rest of the day and yet still be prepared for that crazy snow! Sometimes having a coat or warmer jacket in your car to throw on if cold weather hits, and I ALWAYS carry an umbrella in my car just in case (I think that’s English Woman in me needing to be prepared for rain at all times 😉 ).
I see a light at the end of the tunnel, the sun is peeking through the clouds and I am ready to take on whatever weather gets thrown my way today!
What transition style could you create for yourself?
Have a fabulous Friday…
My Grandma was one of my style icons, and I loved her because her whole life she expressed herself through her style and didn’t worry about being different. My Grandad worked for a shoe company in England and because of that she had sooo many pairs of shoes, and was always ahead of the trends (maybe this is where I got my love for shoes from). She wore bold fabrics, colors and styles and was one of the first people I ever saw wearing animal print. She knew the power of style and confidently expressed herself in a way that made people sit up and pay attention!
Because she had such a huge impact on my life, I have always wanted to be the same way…try new things and stand out from the crowd.
Snake print or Python print is so huge right now, and I know if my Grandma was still around she would be sporting all the latest looks. It’s not that it is brand new, but I do think it’s a great transitional print that can take us through all the seasons this year. Because it is such an amazing print you are going to see it in most high street stores and online, in a variety of different styles.
Just like no two leopard prints are the same – snake print can come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and styles. I am mixing 2 different colors of snake print in my outfit today, and I love the effect because it just amplifies the look even more. I love the mix of colors and the depth that it brings.
At one point in my life I might have considered it to be a little much to wear 2 different colors of the same print, but what I have found as I get older is that I kind of like coloring outside of the lines…not letting the fear of what others think affect how I dress, what I do and who I am 😉
Another way to wear more than one print is to choose different prints (snake, leopard, zebra etc), mix the patterns but wear them in the same color. It’s OK if you’re not quite there yet…stick to what makes you feel comfortable!
I have linked a few of my favorite snake print pieces below – including the pants I’m wearing
