Memorial Day

“In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends” –  Martin Luther King Jr

Headed out this Memorial Day to take my boys to lunch.  It’s sometimes hard to get them all together at the same time, especially now my oldest is responsible and very often working.

It is a beautiful sunny day and although I typically don’t wear a lot of shorts, I found these distressed denim mid length shorts that I thought looked great with this over-sized white top.

The key for me when picking outfits to wear on days that are sunny and warm, is that I don’t want to feel claustrophobic – so I like looser fitting tops.

Even though the shorts are very casual I thought the sandals and top dressed them up enough that I didn’t look too “slouchy.”  I love the blue tinted lens aviator sunglasses that were really cheap from Marshall’s – but I honestly love to wear so many different sunglasses that it becomes expensive if you spend a lot on each pair.  I feel like certain styles of sunglasses go better with certain types of outfits – so I have quite a large collection.

I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day and you keep in your thoughts those that have been loved and lost.

Beautiful Sunday

“To have your own unique style you must lose your fear of being wrong.”

Grabbing some much-needed “alone” reading time before heading to church…

Sitting in my back yard enjoying the much awaited summer here in Utah I took the opportunity to relax just for a few minutes  – amidst the chaos of making breakfast, making sure the boys are ready and a quick clean up, I needed some tranquility!

Summer is such an amazing time for so many fashion choices.  I put together the outfit today by choosing the skirt first, and then added a neutral white top and shoes that highlighted one of the colors in the skirt!  Pretty simple to do, especially when the skirt had so many colored flowers.  Sometimes the tendency can be to pick a neutral pair of shoes or match to your top – I wanted a little more color than that today…

I think no man or woman should ever fear being expressive in their style choices – I always encourage my boys to create their own unique style – sometimes those styles are “not traditional” however, the key is to have the confidence to try, and then figure out what really works for you!

Dressing up Black…

“Women who wear black lead colorful lives…”

If you are looking for an easy “go to” work idea, I have just the one for you today…

Put together an outfit using a plain black dress, but dress it up with accessories and shoes.

For today’s outfit I chose a mid-length black dress, which doesn’t fit too tight. I then added a great Turquoise and gold statement necklace with matching earrings, some great grey sandals and finally some gold and turquoise bangles to finish off the look.

I definitely love to wear colors, but sometimes, I use those colors in my shoes and accessories rather than in the whole outfit. I know there are a lot of you out there that always tend to go to black as a safe color, but what would be really fun would be for you to add some color to that as well.

Try wearing a pair of shoes that really stand out, and then add in some accessories to finish off the whole look. Another great way to add accessories is by wearing scarves, lightweight sweaters or jackets, or even a great belt.

The ultimate goal is to make black not just ordinary – spice it up a little!

Don’t always pick out the black pair of shoes because they are “safe” experiment with your style and really make your own personal style statement!

Classy in Khaki…

“The stiletto is a feminine weapon that men just don’t have.”

I really think khaki is such a versatile color…it can be great for casual wear but also looks professional bordering on sexy when you wear something form fitting.

I love this dress because it works so well for a busy day at work.  So many colors can be worn with khaki that you can change your entire look by adding different accessories or shoes.

Today I chose to wear the shoes that my 2 younger boys bought me for Mother’s Day.  I will show more detail tomorrow, but suffice it to say – they definitely know me!

To look professional for work doesn’t mean sticking to conservative colors such as black, navy or brown…mix it up a little!

I feel like one of the biggest mistakes that can be made in fashion is to be predictable…I prefer to keep people guessing and that is why you will see so many variations on my style in this blog!  Stay tuned for more…

Saturday Game Day

“If wearing leggings as pants is wrong then I don’t want to be right!

As is usual in the spring and early summer in our household – up early to get one of my boys to their baseball games.

I decided to just pull my hair into a top knot and throw on some legging and a loose T shirt.   I am sure you are wondering why I am wearing wedge sandals and not flats, well…the simple answer is that I don’t wear flat shoes very often because I prefer at least a little heel.

It is a beautiful day in Salt Lake City, so this lightweight T shirt will be perfect as the day gets warmer and warmer.  The bird and tree details on the shirt are very feminine so it really can dressed down without taking away from the feminity!

Sitting for 4-5 hours – leggings are perfect because they are comfy and flexible…

Black & White

“When it comes down to it, let them think what they want.  If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I’m already better than them anyway!” – Marilyn Monroe

Business dress in black and white today – of course with just a little twist.

Wearing black is not a bad thing, for those of my friends who always default to wearing black, but here’s what’s different about today’s outfit…I added some white pants to mix it up and then added some great red and black shoes.

Black doesn’t have to be boring or predictable, in fact, it can really can be classy, but the key is that you have to make it stand out~!

This is just one way you can make black stand out. I am sure every one of you have black pieces of clothing that you can put together to create your own unique look.

Here’s a challenge – if you feel like you have put together an outfit that is just a little different using black as a main component, then shoot me a picture. I would love to feature some outfits on my blog put together by someone other than myself. If you don’t want anyone to know it’s you, you can snap a picture that doesn’t show your face…

I look forward to seeing some ideas of outfits…

Khaki can be Classy

“A modern day Goddess knows that being Feminine is not weak!”

For some reason I just love this Khaki color – I think because it is a great color when you have a tan or some color to your skin. It is especially classy because the fabric is satin and it has lace accents.

It is one of the types of dresses that works with lots of different types of figures – because it is is straight and doesn’t gather at the waist. I love how feminine and flowing it is, but I also wanted to add something to make it a little edgier – so that’s where these great sandals came in.

The pearl necklace adds to the femininity but the sandals say “There is more here than meets the eye.”

This color doesn’t work well with all complexions – so make sure that you try on whatever you are looking at before you buy it! In the spring and summer I love to wear dresses, especially this type of looser dress because they are much cooler than layering skirts and pants or even skirts. Anything that doesn’t gather at the waist it going to allow you to be cooler and not perspire as much. There is nothing less flattering than wearing something that causes you to overheat and start to show perspiration marks by the end of the day.

Femininity is something we as women should harness because it is very powerful, and not to be ignored. Feeling feminine brings more power and confidence, and therefore success. I used to think that being too feminine made people think that I as a Woman was not as strong as a man…I am here to tell you, that femininity is something that men and other women actually admire.

Happiness is…

“Happiness is the secret to all beauty.  There is no beauty without happiness .”

As I was sitting contemplating what to do on this weekend now that baseball games have been cancelled I found this picture from when Brandon and I stayed at the Terranea Resort in California.

I realized that while I was there I felt happy and relaxed.  This picture was taken when Brandon and I were on our way out to dinner.

Sitting overlooking the ocean I realized that happiness truly is a decision we make everyday!  Although I was grieving over the loss of my Grandma I found a tremendous amount of peace in that place.  It truly helped me and I made a decision that day to choose happiness, because when I am happy I can accomplish anything!

Headed to the Pool

“Some of the best memories are made in flip-flops.”

One thing I love about vacation is just throwing on a swimsuit and coverup to head to the pool!

This simple yet great coverup is from Old Navy and it’s perfect for heading to the beach or pool!  I love white for summer because it highlights your tan…

There are so many places that sell great cover ups – Old Navy isn’t typically where I would expect to find one…

When you pick out the coverup that you want to wear it’s best to wear one that is looser just in case you get a little too much sun and don’t want anything to irritate the burn!

Coverup:  Old Navy   Sunglasses:  Alexander McQueen    Shoes:  Tory Burch

“The future is so bright that I have to wear shades.”

After running around all day running errands and sitting at baseball games in crazy wind, my hair is looking a little disheveled!  I didn’t mind because I had a great pair of shades…

I have always been addicted to having a different pair of shades to go with different outfits.  I have spent quite a lot of money on designer glasses (even when you buy them from Nordstrom Rack, Century 21 or TJ Maxx the cost can add up).

I recently found this site that sells great jewelry and of course sunglasses.   The best thing about these sunnies is that they make a statement and yet they won’t break the bank.

Go to the site and check it out – if you use the code STYLEQUEENIE20 at checkout you will get 20% discount.

Happy shopping – let me know what you find!
