Laughter- the Best Medicine

“If you laugh a lot, when you get older, your wrinkles will be in the right places!”

As I was driving to work today I started thinking about my life, things I have done, people I have met and the things I am grateful for.  I contemplated my relationships and how much I treasure them and what it is that makes them special.  The one thing that I realized is that laughter is vital in my life.  For as long as I can remember I have always loved to make people laugh or smile and I gravitate to those people that do the same for me.  Not that I can’t be serious (because I am English you know and we do love to be reserved and serious) but laughter…that’s my favorite.

Because knowing facts about things is so important to me, I did a little research to find out why laughter might seem to cure so many things, and here’s what I found:

Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells which improves our ability to fight disease. It also triggers the release of endorphins which promote a sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

So, the expression “laughter is the best medicine” actually does have medical implications – I don’t know about you but I would much rather laugh than have to take medicine of any kind 😉

With all of this being said, laughter is only the start of the things that you can do for yourself that will help keep you vitalized and young.  Finding something else that you love will also help – especially if that thing is some kind of exercise…even if it’s just walking, you will find a huge difference in your outlook, energy and most importantly, you’ll be having fun!

So, how do you add more laughter and fun into your life, you ask…well, I have found that the more fun, spontaneous, sassy and interesting people that I surround myself with, the more I find laughter just appears in my life because I love spending time with them.  We all have different personality types, different sense of humors, and different life experiences, so who you associate with should be in tune with what you love or are looking to attract into your life.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you may be in the mood to watch a movie and the only ones that appeal to you are comedies – I take that as a sign that my body needs some laughter, so I always like to make sure I an listening and I of course oblige 😉

However you choose to invite laughter into your life, remember – we don’t laugh because we’re happy, we’re happy because we laugh!
