What do you see when you look in the mirror?

“If I asked you to name all the things that you love, how long would it take for you to name yourself?”

Having lunch with a friend today the topic of conversation was about not liking what we see when we look at ourselves in the mirror.  This can definitely be the case, and I have noticed that as I get older, there are more of those times than there used to be.  So how do we handle the fact that we can’t control the fact that we are getting older?  How do we feel good about our changing appearance?  What is it that makes us look and feel more youthful?

If this still isn’t ringing true for you…consider this:  Ever have a bad hair day and everything seems to go downhill from there, or ever go out knowing that what you are wearing isn’t flattering or your best look, or ever had a zit or mark on your face that makes you self conscious all day?  I guarantee that how you feel you look is much worse than anyone else will think about you.  Trust me when I tell you, other people are focused on themselves a lot more than noticing what might be wrong with you!

I have realized is that there are times when I feel good about how I look (and those times are not just when I have had time to do my makeup, or pamper myself).  Sometimes, I just like how I look!  I have drawn the conclusion that most of the time how I feel about how I look really has more to do about my attitude than anything else.  So how do we make sure we have a good attitude when we view ourselves in the mirror. There are always going to be things that stress us out, make us feel crappy, but honestly if we can feel great about ourselves, then everything else seems to just work itself out.

There are definitely things that make us feel better about ourselves and taking care of ourselves is one of them.  Dressing nicely, taking care of our skin, our bodies and making an effort to present ourselves in the best way is always a great start.

Again, I want to reiterate that when we look at ourselves and judge ourselves, our opinion doesn’t only come from what we are wearing, what we look like or our style, a vast majority of what we feel comes from our attitude.  We teach our children that they need to love themselves, but do we follow our own advice? Do we look at ourselves in the mirror and think “you are an amazing person” or do we look for our flaws and what is wrong?  It really helps me to look in the mirror each time I see myself and notice 3 things that I love about what I see…that way I have limited time to focus on what I don’t like!

Mirrors are all around us…so why not use them to our advantage.  The confidence you will see build because you appreciate yourself is only going to help you in all areas of your life!
